Smiling
What is a smile but a lift of the mouth?
What makes a smile real?
Is it happiness?
I just don't understand
Why can't I smile a real smile?
Sometimes I'm happy
So why can't I really smile
Am I missing something?
That something that makes a true smile
If so how do I get it?
Or do I just not deserve it
I could understand that
But why?
Why does that simple lift of the mouth hurt so much?
It pains me but I keep it on my face
Because I want other people to smile
Because maybe if I see a real smile enough times
I'll be able to create one of my own
But until then my smile is still fake
And it still hurts
I still want to cry every time I lift the corners of my mouth
Because I just don't understand
I've seen happy people with fake smiles
I've seen sad people with real ones
So tell me this
What is a smile but a lift of the mouth?
A poem about depression and smiles. Hope someone likes it.
