Just thought I'd inform you of how I've set this up because I've never written a script before –
Scene name
WHERE THE SCENE IS SET (Following straight on from the bold text)
CHARACTER DIALOG
Speech
[Stage Directions]
The interviews
TAKES PLACE IN FOUR DIFFERENT PLACES - DEPENDING ON WHO IS SPEAKING -
BANK MANAGER - IN THEIR OFFICE
ZOOLOGIST - IN THEIR OFFICE
CHEF - THEIR KITCHEN
SHOP MANAGER - IN THE SHOP CAFE
[Sherk is wearing a suit, his hair is neat and he has a nervous smile on his face. He's taking part in several different interviews (the scene is switching between them depending on who is taking), trying his best to get the job even though it's easy to tell he's nervous.]
BANK MANAGER
So what makes you think you're qualified to do this job?
SHERK
Erm... Well
[Show the bank manager, chef, shop manager and zoologist (at their different offices) all looking expectant.]
SHERK
Nothing really...
CHEF
Then why bother-
ZOOLOGIST
Coming here?
SHERK
I... umm...
[The shop manager shakes he head, looks at his clipboard that contains the list of applicants and crosses off the name Sherlock Holmes.]
SHOP MANAGER
You don't live up to your name very well...
[Sherk rubs his neck and looks down uncomfortably.]
SHERK
Yeah, I get that a lot.
[The zoologist smiles and shakes Sherk's hand]
ZOOLOGIST
It was nice meeting you-
BANK MANAGER
We'll get back to you-
SHOP MANAGER
Soon, to tell you if you got the job...
SHERK
Thanks...
Sherk walks out of the bank and begins to wander down the street, he keeps shaking his head and clenching his fists. His phone rings so he fishes it out of his pocket and examines it - 'Freya is calling'. He sighs and then puts the phone to his ear.
FREYA
Hey Sherk!
SHERK
Hey Freya...
FREYA
Where are you? Did your interviews go well?
SHERK
What do you think?
[Freya laughs and then drops something that makes a crashing noise on Sherk's phones.]
FREYA
Oops.
SHERK
What did you drop this time?
FREYA
A plate... Anyway! Did they really go that badly?
SHERK
I can't talk in front of strangers.
[Freya laughs again.]
FREYA
You want to go get a coffee? It'll help keep your mind off it.
SHERK
Sure. Meet you at the usual.
FREYA
Whoa, don't say that again, it sounds too weird coming out of your mouth...
[They both laugh and Sherk ends the call, he walks down the street and turns a corner.]
Introductions
IN A COFFEE SHOP
[Sherk is sat at a table, mixing a lot sugar into his drink, Freya comes and sits down; her hair is straight and unstyled and she doesn't wear any noticeable make-up. Sherk gives her a small smile as she raises her eyebrows at the amount of sugar in his drink.]
FREYA
I'll always wonder how you're so skinny.
SHERK
I'm such a scaredy-cat that I shiver all my weight off...
[Freya laughs and takes a sip of her drink then looks at her friend with concern]
FREYA
Sorry about the job...
SHERK
Life goes on, though what kind of life, I just don't know.
[Sherk chuckles and Freya smiles softly, and then frowns.]
FREYA
I thought you're parents had left you enough money, Sherlock.
SHERK
Eck, don't call me by my full name, it's stupid.
FREYA
You're his great, great... umm, how many times?
SHERK
No idea.
FREYA
Well you're the great, great - however many 'great's - grandson of Sherlock Holmes! Come on, that's awesome, even after all this time knowing you and I still think it's cool.
SHERK
Hmph, well I'm not anything like him - I'm quite happy being me.
FREYA
Sometimes I envy you, ya know?
SHERK
Why? My family's all dead; I live alone and only have one friend...
[Freya smiles but then leans back on the chair.]
FREYA
Both my parents expect the best from me but I've let them down.
[Sherk shrugs and downs his coffee.]
SHERK
Tell you what, I'll take you to the cinema to cheer you up - that new sci-fi film is out.
FREYA
That'd be great, but you're going to have to change before that.
SHERK
Sure!
[Sherk and Freya leave the shop and begin to walk down the busy street to Sherk's house. A man pushes it Freya and she stumbles but Sherk catches her and grins.]
SHERK
You aut to be more careful!
FREYA
Some bloke went straight into me!
SHERK
Sure(!)
FREYA
Hmph
SHERK
Come on.
Sherk's house problems
SHERK'S HOUSE
[They walk into Sherk's house and hang up their jackets, Freya then wanders into the kitchen as Sherk picks up the array of letters in the hall.]
FREYA
What are all these?
[Sherk walks into the kitchen where Freya is examining the pile of letters on the expensive looking stone island in the middle of the room.]
SHERK
See why I need the money now?
FREYA
But your parents left you loads of money.
SHERK
No, they left me the house, I can keep the house because we own it but a lot of my stuff is going back if I can't find a way to pay the bills.
[Freya nods and picks up several letters labeled 'urgent'.]
FREYA
Can't you sell the house? You'd get a lot of money for a big one like this - even with the sales price going down...
SHERK
I can't sell it! The real Sherlock Holmes lived here! His study is still upstairs... And besides - this is all I have left, Freya...
[Freya reaches out and grabs his hand.]
FREYA
It'll be okay, go get changed, I'll pay for the cinema.
[Sherk smiles and walks up the stairs, Freya puts the letters down and also goes upstairs.]
The study of Sherlock Holmes
SHERK'S HOUSE - SHERLOCK'S STUDY
[Freya walks to the very end of the hall, the door is much older than the others around it and looks like it hadn't been opened in years. She pushes open the wooden door and walks into the room - it's relatively with big two of the walls are covered in leather bound books and an old writing desk in front of a large window, on the writing desk is an old piece of paper with several ink blotches on it. Freya walks around the room and stops next to the window where the wallpaper is peeling off and a small amount of damp is clinging to the wall.]
FREYA
Sherk really should take better care of this place...
[She walks over to the bookcases and slides her fingers across the covers, smiling to herself. Then she gets to a gap in the series of books so she looks into it to see what's keeping the book separate, she puts her hand into the hole and pulls out a small box.]
FREYA
(shouting)
Sherk, are you hiding anything in here?
SHERK
No?
FREYA
Okay!
[Freya opens the box and gasps, inside is a silver pocket watch with the initials S.H written on what looks like a - very round and only just pointing out - button on the lid and a second, more obvious, button on the top. Freya presses the second button and the watch clicks open showing a normal watch face with a white background and black numbers and hands.]
SHERK
I'm done, are you ready to go.
[Sherk walks into the room and looks around.]
SHERK
I haven't been in here since...
FREYA
I know, here look what I found.
[Freya walks over and shows him the watch, Sherk takes it and walks out of the room, Freya follows him.]
FREYA
I'll go get my bag.
[Freya walks downstairs leaving Sherk staring at the watch, she walks into the kitchen and picks up her bag, she then looks over at the letters on the counter again. Sherk wanders into the kitchen in completely different clothes to what he was wearing before - clothes from the late 1800's, the kind that Sherlock Holmes would wear.]
FREYA
What are you wearing?
SHERK
(In an old British Accent)
Is this no suitable attire?
[Freya laughs and shakes her head; Sherk frowns as if nothing's wrong and walks towards the front door.]
SHERK
(In an old British Accent)
If anyone is dressed in appropriate it is you...
[Freya looks down at her jeans and t-shirt and rolls her eyes. The she noticed that the old pocket watch was hanging around Sherk's neck.]
FREYA
Just because you're wearing Sherlock's watch doesn't mean you need to act like you're from the 1800's.
Sherk
(In an old British Accent)
Of course...
[They walk through the door and shut it behind them, as it shuts the walls and furniture changes for a split second - so it looks like the original furniture from the 1800's.]
A.N: Hope you like it – please tell me what you think :)
