Chapter Seven- The Newcomer

They arrived at the door of a building. It was a large building. It was one of those skyscraper type buildings. It had a revolving door. Angel shivered next to him. He glanced at her and he looked at the shotgun seat. He saw Max smile in the mirror. His wavy blond hair looked proper and perfect. He put on his black sunglasses that were once in his front pocket of his crisp dark blue suit. They hid his gray eyes.

"We're here. I strongly suggest that you keep a tight hold on little Angel. She might get lost once we come inside. These men inside here have no morals per say. So that's a little advice to keep," Max said with a cool smile.

Detrix got out of the car. He grimaced slightly. He was liking the idea of fighting even less. It did not appeal to him. He would rather shoot Infected than fight for the pleasure of the last remaining upper class. Detrix looked at his feet. His eyes.

He had forgotten about their color. They had acted like it was normal. They were treating him like he was normal. Detrix bit his lip. His hands were in fists. The sleeves, of course, were too big on him. He liked oversized sweaters. He drew his left hand up. He felt the slight pain.

"Oh, here. I have some contact lenses for you. It should hide that color." Max said, pointing a finger to his eyes.

Detrix again noticed that Max was taller than him. Detrix carefully inserted them. He felt a slight discomfort. He blinked twice.

"Do they fit?"

Detrix looked down when he nodded slightly and he looked at Angel. She was looking at Max. Her bright red hair looked disheveled. He wondered if he could get her a brush. No, he shouldn't be thinking about menial tasks. He had to find out more of this fight club.

They went inside and he immediately saw a reception's desk. Two grown men were there to greet them.

"Mr. Ericson, you are finally here. We have your dinner ready. Oh, we see that you have a guest."

"No, not a guest. A fighter. He shall fight in the next round. Get him prepped. I want to see if he can fight well."

"Ah yes, of course. We will take him to the prep room."

Detrix was lead away from the group. He watched Angel get taken away to another room. One of the receptionists took her away. Max remained behind.

"Don't worry. They are taking her to my wife and my daughter, Natalia," Max said before leaving.

Detrix went with the men to the prep room. He was in a room that looked like a business room. He sat down in one of the chairs. He saw a man that was bleeding at the nose. He was left alone.

Detrix heard the door get knocked.

"Hi, excuse me for interrupting!"

Detrix looked up when he heard a woman's voice. He was surprised to see a woman with a bright cheerful smile. She had bright blonde hair and dark green eyes.

"Oh, you must be Detrix. My name is Elisabeth. You've met my husband. I came to say hello. Oh, Angel is with my daughter. Here, I got you a costume to fight. I made it myself. I hope you like it. Oh yeah, I heard that your throat got hurt so that's why you can't speak right now. I don't know sign language so I'll learn so I can talk to you. Ah, I must leave."

She spoke quickly and she left quickly. He wondered how she could stay so cheerful in a place like this. He fingered the bag she had left him.

Max came by and he had brought Angel with him.

"I need to talk to you about where you will fight. Here let me show you."

They entered the arena. Detrix was amazed at how a big top-notch building turned into a shoddy fight arena. Angel looked at Detrix for the first time since he had put on the contacts. She looked at him surprised. She looked at Max who had begun to speak.

Max smiled and he showed them the cages. "This is where you will fight. The more you fight each day, the more food you get. You will need a stage name. Or you can use your own name. We also need payment for your first fight."

Detrix asked him through Angel about what he meant about payment.

Max smiled. "Well in this case, I want to give a present to my daughter. A dress or a companion to become her friend. If you give Angel to me, you will not have to worry about her anymore. My wife would take care of her."

Detrix looked at Angel. Give her up? He wondered if it would be best. Angel must have known what he was thinking because she began to take off her dress. Detrix knelt down alarmed and he pulled her dress down.

What the hell are you doing? He signed to her in clear surprise.

She had tears in her light green eyes. "I want to stay with you!"

Detrix bit his lip. Stay? He wondered why she was so attached to him. They only met for a few hours at best. He saw a potato sack and he gave it to Angel.

You're staying with me, got it?

She nodded. "We'll give you the dress."

Angel went off to change. Detrix looked at Max. He was smiling.

"I knew you wouldn't give her up. Or rather, she wouldn't want to abandon you. I had to give you an option. If you ever have the need to go somewhere alone and you can't bring her with you, you can leave her with my wife. Oh, we should talk about your eyes. I gave you contacts I know. But I should advice you to wear them even if you're fighting. I know that's a health hazard, but you should wear them either way. Your eyes are too bright. I bet I could see them from a mile away. Your hair hides them a bit, but we should really hide the color."

Detrix nodded.

Max waved his hand and Martin came with a small case. Max handed it to Detrix. He took it in his hands and he opened it. Contacts were inside. Detrix saw a mirror. He didn't know what color the contacts they had given him were. He looked at himself in the mirror. They were dark green. Specks of blue were there and red. He winced. His eye color had changed the contacts. No, his DNA had changed the contact color.

Max looked at him surprised. "What the-? But I thought the contacts were the color of-"

"I'm back," Angel interrupted. She noticed Detrix's eyes and she finally said what she had wanted to say before when she noticed them. "Your bright eyes! Why did you cover up the color? They were so pretty how they were before."

Max smiled. "We needed to cover the color because you don't see colors like that here. Well, not unnaturally bright colors. Don't worry he'll take them off when you two are alone in your room Oh, by the way, you will be sleeping on the third floor. It's best for a sweet little girl like Angel."

Angel blushed a bit. Detrix felt like rolling his eyes. He fingered the cage's criss-crossing bars. He closed his eyes. Well, his first opponent was weak.

He looked at Max. He wanted to fight now. All day if he could. Max was surprised at the request and he nodded.

"Fine. Let's get your costume ready. My wife had it made when I sent a message to her via carrier pigeon."

Detrix showed him the bag that Elisabeth had given him. Max's eyes widened and then he smiled.

"She couldn't wait now, could she? Okay, get ready."

Detrix changed quickly. He wore a black long-sleeved shirt. The black glove that had been on his left hand remained there. He wore jeans that were held by a belt. They were black also. He wore black sneakers. He covered his mouth and nose with a part of the shirt. It had been put there on purpose. To hide his appearance. His hair fell in front of his eyes. He felt bored.

He entered the arena. He saw his opponent in front of him. He looked stronger than him. Great, Detrix thought, how will I make it look like I'm going to lose? I need to fool him into thinking he can beat me so I can blow up that fact in his face. He touched his left arm. He could calculate that strength he would need to beat him. Not too little, but not too much. He flexed his arms and he stretched.

"Hah, I'm fighting a weakling? Oh, this is going to be easy."

Detrix smiled. The black cloth hid his mouth. It is going to be easy.

Detrix felt relaxed. He knew he was going to win. But how? Which tactic should I use? He was thinking that until the bell rang which signified that the fight had begun.

His opponent lunged at him. Which was stupid. Detrix dodged easily. It was like fighting with a bull. He cautiously avoided getting hit. His opponent tried to punch him again. Detrix grabbed his arm and he twisted it. His opponent screamed in pain and he fell to one knee. Detrix could hear the shouts of the crowd in the bleachers. No, he thought, I can't allow myself to get riled up. I have to think calmly.

Detrix smiled and he felt his eyes hurt. He blinked twice. The contacts felt like they were burning. His left arm hurt. He tried to count to ten. Why now? All of the sudden, he felt a stabbing pain in his stomach. He felt the knife pierce his stomach even deeper. He choked at the pain. He ran away from his opponent.

"Don't think that a newcomer like you can beat me. You are not even worth this fight. I, Kor, will kill you."

Detrix touched the blood that his stomach was gushing out. He closed his eyes. Ignore the pain. Ignore it.

He opened his eyes. He had to finish this quickly. This was taking too much of his time. He was fooling around too much. He ran to Kor and he kicked his face. Kor spun. Detrix stood on one leg and he kicked again sending a mere inkling of his strength. Kor fell to the ground. Detrix put his right leg down. He touched his stomach.

Well, this isn't good, he thought. He got out of the arena. He was surrounded by what seemed to be paramedics.

He sat down on a gurney. He didn't want to lie down. He closed his eyes. He had felt a vision coming when he had been fighting. That was inconvenient. He felt it hit him fully.

Detrix was standing in the arena. He looked up to see a girl staring at him from the bleachers with her mouth open. She had gray eyes and dark brown hair. She looked familiar and she was talking to Max. That when he noticed that she was trying to get recruited to fight for food. She was talking to Max and Max was pointing to him.

Oh, so I'm the poster boy you're using, he mouthed. He pointed himself pissed. He shook his head. I guess I have to put up a good fight, huh?

The vision went away. He opened his eyes. Why did that girl appear again? He was going to have to avoid her if he saw her for real. He felt the discomfort of the contacts even more.

Detrix winced and he saw Max appear. He was practically beaming with pride. Why are you so prideful, he thought. I was the one who fought. He was slightly annoyed.

"Good job, I was right to recruit you. Welcome to my fight club."

Max offered his hand to shake and Detrix took it.

Hi! Sorry for the long wait for this chapter. I was busy with other things. I will update as soon as I can. As you can see, in this chapter Detrix becomes a fighter.
