"One more push Mrs. Milligan! Keep going, that's right!"
There was another loud scream from the poor woman who was struggling ever so much to try and get through this. Although, she knew that all of this would just end badly…either for her or the baby.
She pushed her hardest, even though it took away all of her breath and make her feel even sicker than she already did. She wanted to see her brand new little girl; she wanted to hold her at least once.
"You've did it! You've did it!" The nurse screamed with joy as the fresh screams of the little girl filled the room. Sofia looked up at the small, precious little body. She could feel all strength draining from her body but still managed to force a smile.
"Can I hold her?" She asked breathlessly. The nurse wrapped the tiny body up in a pink cotton blanket and handed her over to the tired mother.
Sofia looked down at her new daughter; she knew this was the last time she'd see her. She smiled a radiant smile at her and touched her soft cheek with the back of her hand. Her crying had dulled down now and she was wriggling around like a caterpillar inside the blanket.
"Have a good life, Ruby." She ushed into the infants ear as she felt the life being drained from her body. The nurse's eyes widened
"Mrs. Milligan? Mrs. Milligan, wake up!"
Dave Milligan, the father of the new child, stumbled into the hospital, his eyes scanning around frantically.
"Mr. Milligan?" A sorrowful looking nurse asked in a shaky, yet calm voice. He stared at her
"Where's Sofi? Where's my baby?"
The nurse gave him a look that said 'I'm so sorry' before speaking up again "I am so sorry…your wife didn't make it. We are very sorry; we're trying to figure out the cause of death now." She put a comforting hand on his shoulder as his eyes began to water. He fell into the seat beside himself and began to wail into his calloused hands, repeating Sofia's name over and over again, and that he didn't believe the news.
The nurse got to her feet and was about to leave when she felt him clutch her hand. She looked at him, into his watery eyes that streamed tears down his cheeks.
"W…where's my baby?"
She smiled a little before leading him to his baby girl.
He stared at her in the small, metal hospital crib. She was tiny but looked so much like her mother. Her skin was tanned, her hair was dark brown and frizzy and she had the same nose as her mother. He smiled
"Atleast I still have you…" he sniffed, wiping his tears away and gently touching her face.
He named her Ruby; the name Sofia always wanted to give her.

The soothing voice of Bob Marley filled the smoky bedroom as a now 16 year old Ruby sat on her windowsill of her dad's small apartment puffing away on a joint of weed. The rain fell hard from the dark sky and far down below, in the city; people were rushing around beneath her. The song suddenly switched to her favourite, Baby I love your way, and a smile tugged at her lips as she began to mutter the words quietly whilst still inhaling her joint.
Her six year old little step-sister, Sunny, who had been watching cartoons in the living room barged straight into her room without any kind of warning. Ruby dropped the joint out of the window quickly, coughing a little.
"Wow Sunny!" She snapped "Ever heard of freaking knocking?"
Sunny, who was dressed in her favourite Cinderella princess dress, smiled up at her big sister "Dad's back!"
Ruby sighed deeply, rolling her eyes as she jumped off her windowsill. Her feet met with the rough carpet and she grabbed the air freshener on her desk and sprayed it everywhere so that he wouldn't smell the weed. She quickly turned off the CD player and walked with Sunny to the living room where their dad was lounging on the sofa, looking stressed as always.
Ruby leaned against the doorframe with a sour look on her face "About time you came home. I'm not a fucking babysitter you know – I have a life to be living and believe it or not it doesn't involve looking after Sunny!"
Dave sighed; rubbing his tired eyes "No, it involves smoking illegal drugs and getting high of your ass 24/7."
Ruby glared at him "I'm going out." Was all she said. Sunny ran over to their dad, a smile glued to her face as she climbed onto his lap.
"How was work daddy?"
Dave smiled "It was good. But, it's better to be home." He could hear Ruby rustling around in her room – preferably looking for her money
"I took away your money. I put it in a safe place so that you don't smoke yourself to death!"
He heard the rustling stop then watched as she stormed back into the room, looking as angry as ever. For a few minutes she just scowled at him, looking him from head to toe, trying to think of something smart to say.
"Where the fuck is it?" she asked between gritted teeth.
"I'm not telling you." He said simply "Sunny, why don't you go see what you want for dinner?"
The little blonde girl jumped off his lap and dashed out of the room faster than a bullet.
"I see you didn't bother to feed your own sister."
"She's not my responsibility! Plus, she's my step sister! Now give me my money back or I swear I'll fucking fuck this apartment up so bad."
"Forget about it Ruby. I'm not giving you it back. You can have a dollar a day for your school dinner and that's it. I don't want you to die. I've lost too many things in one lifetime."
It was true. First he'd lost Ruby's mother and then Sunny's mother decided to runaway one day when Sunny was four. As heart-breaking as it was, he had to get over it and keep looking after them by himself. He hadn't dated again since.
"You know what? Weeds the only thing in this world that keeps me from destroying myself!"
"Oh, here we go again! Ruby stop being dramatic!" Dave frowned at her. She turned around again and left to here room, slamming the door shut and locking it.
She took one look at herself in the mirror. Her long wavy brown hair was greasy and her clothes were tattered; they could hardly afford anything…
She hated it here. She hated everything here. Her high school was full of bullies who targeted her just because she wasn't as rich as them, and the whole town was just filled to the top with idiots who thought they were amazing when in all reality they were nothing.
Shame she'd just smoked her last joint. She felt like she could really use another one.
February 3rd, 2011, 9:30 am
"Ruby Milligan. Late again. What a surprise." Mrs. Fen, her English teacher, tutted with a look of disappointment on her face. Ruby tried to avoid eye contact with her as she took her seat quietly, secretly hoping to just disappear.
"How does she get away with being late but when I was late I got a detention?" A popular blonde girl asked a hint of anger in her voice.
"She is not getting away with anything Miss. Monte. Ruby you have an hour detention tonight. If you come late to that, I'll make it longer."
Ruby sat up straight in her seat just then "But Miss-"
"No buts! You were late so you will take the consequences."
Ruby wasn't surprised she'd given her a detention. Mrs. Fen had always hated her for some reason and was always looking for reasons to give her detention or extra homework.
"She still hasn't brushed her hair." She heard a girl mumble from behind her. She shifted uncomfortably, touching her hair subconsciously.
"And she's wearing the same shirt and jeans as yesterday. "Another friend sniggered.
She sunk further into her seat, wanting to just melt into it. Maybe then she wouldn't have to deal with this humiliation. She knew the teacher could hear the insults being thrown at her, but she chose to ignore it, and teach a pointless lesson about P.E.E paragraphs.
Things didn't just stop there though. At dinner time she didn't have enough for anything to eat, she stood on a girls foot and got shouted abuse at for it, fell over and now was sitting in detention when she really should've been picking up her little sister.
"Mrs, I really need to go. I have to pick up my little sister."
Mrs. Fen's beady eyes looked up from the thick, brown book she was reading, her eyes immediately locking with Ruby's
"You shall leave at four."
4:30 pm
"You're late." Sunny said simply as her big sister approached her. She was drenched, her long blonde hair sticking to her face. God, you would have thought the teachers would have had the decency to let her sit inside while she waited!
"I know, I know." She replied hastily, grabbing her hand and pulling her up "Come on. Dad'll be home soon."
They rushed back to the apartment where Ruby made Sunny a microwave burger and some fries while they waited for their dad to get back.
When he did Ruby said she was going out for a while and quickly left.
She walked up the alley where she usually bought her weed. She wasn't surprised when she saw him, Jamain an African American 18 year old boy, standing in his usual spot with his hood up over his face. He was talking with a few of his friends, friends Ruby had never saw nor met before.
Fearlessly she approached them "Jamain." She said shyly from behind one of the guys. Their faces all turned emotionless and their laughter stopped as they turned to her.
Jamain coughed awkwardly "Ruby? Wasn't expecting to see you 'till atleast next week. I'm outta weed. Sorry bo'."
She could feel all the other boys staring her up and down but she ignored them "Well…what do you have?"
Jamain smiled showing his pearly whites "LSD."
Ruby had heard of that drug before but she had never tried it and had promised herself she'd never do anything but smoke weed, but she didn't want to seem weird in front of all these guys that had probably taken it.
"I'll take some." She said with a forced smile. One of the boys laughed as he blew a smoke ring
"You sure?" Jamain asked with a smirk
"Yes! But…could I pay you next week. My dad took my money away and now…I uh, I don't have anything but I swear you'll have your money by next week!"
Jamain laughed mockingly "Sorry bitch, I don't wait for money. You either pay up or you get nothing."
"Jamain…please!"
"No Ruby! Get me my fucking money and you can have all you want! Now get the hell outta here."
Ruby turned away and stormed off, hearing a couple of insults as she did. This was all her dads fault, if he had've just gave her the money.
She ran back home, flung open the door and stood infront of her dad who was watching T.V in the living room whilst drinking a beer. It was eight o'clock now and Sunny was in bed so he was watching Top Gear.
"You better give me that fucking money now dad!"
He shook his head like she was pathetic "Go to bed Ruby."
"No I will not go to bed! Not 'till you give me my money back! You're a worthless father – you can't even look after your kids! And you don't know how to make them happy because you're just so fucking useless!"
Finally his last nerve with Ruby snapped. He couldn't take her vulgar attitude toward him anymore. He got to his feet, throwing the beer across the room which startled her.
"You think I like working for long hours? You think I WANT to be away from Sunny? DO YOU THINK I WANTED YOUR MOTHER TO DIE? DO YOU THINK I WANTED YOU, A PROM NIGHT MISTAKE, TO BE BORN?" he laughed and took a breath "Well I didn't. In fact, I wish you were the one who had've died…not your mother."
He shut up quickly, realizing he'd gone too far. Her eyes were watery
"I'm so-"
"I fucking hate you!" She screamed and dashed out of the apartment. He followed her quickly, shouting her name over and over. This is the last thing he wanted; to lose her.
"Come back! Ruby I'm sorry!"
She got out into the busy street, pushing a few people out of the way. She got to the road and that's when it happened.
She heard her dad scream her name one last time before everything turned black.
She'd been hit by a car.
Unknown to her, the next time she woke up, she wouldn't be in New York city anymore…oh no, she'd be somewhere bizzare.
