Part 1
As I made my way to the coma ward, I started flipping through the patience file. He was a John Doe, age around 20, involved in a train accident six months ago. He was found twelve hours after the impact with major head trauma and scrap metal deep in his left leg. The only objects found on him were a messenger bag with a laptop in it, that surprisingly survive the accident, a shattered camera, a warn out copy of The Great Gatsby and a key to a locker, number 269.
Until now I have managed to stay clear of a coma case, you tell me to hold a persons heart in my hands and I'll say "How long?" But something about being around a body thats so life less yet knowing that there's someone trapped in there really just sends chills down my back. If you asked how a patient ends up in a coma I could answer you because the science behind it is simple, but I just don't understand why?
I made it to his door, I walked in and was startled by the emptiness of his room, I had forgotten he was a JD, which made things even more depressing. His skin was a light brown, his hair black, his body as expected lifeless. His leg was still bandaged up but the scars on his face have all vanished. I was at the sight of the crash, the one he was in, and its safe to say that this guy was one of the lucky ones. Especially for being right where the impact happened.
I did a regular check up looking for any brain activity, usually we don't do this but a nurse said he open his eyes this morning, No on really believes her, because once you spend enough time with these guys you can't help but imagine them waking up. However it couldn't hurt to look, though is doesn't look like he's gonna be waking up any time so-
I jumped back from the bed, I felt a finger slide up my hand, i stared at his fingers my eyes about to pop out of my head, but there was no movement what so ever.
"Grimm are you okay?"I turned to the door where Hannah, the nurse who claimed to see him open his eyes stood.
"Uh, yeah I'm fine." This is why I hate coma patients, they have a way of getting me to unravel
Part 2
It had been three months since I felt JD's finger rub against my hand and he was still out like a light. Though i had no responsibility to do so, I started to stop by his room at least twice a week. I felt bad for the guy, what if he woke up, and found himself all alone.
"Do you really think he's gonna wake up?" asked Ally one day, voicing my thoughts. Ally's the nurse who looks after the JD.
"Stranger things have happen," that was a lie, for a hospital this place was actually pretty dull. In fact the only reason I was at the train site was because of the size of the accident was to much for St. Joseph's to take in, but even then the only action we saw was a couple of cracked heads and third degree burns.
"I don't know, I mean it's not like there's anyone rooting for him to wake up."
"what are you talking about, the entire staff in rooting for him."
"Yeah but they just want to know what his back story is."
This was true, there was currently a poll going on over where he came from, guesses range from prison bailer to the prince on Persia, there's not a lot of clues to go on. A computer, a key, a camera and a book, actually that pretty much sums up a tourist but that would kind of be a let down, plus I have a hundred on CIA agent.
"Well I'm rooting for him."
Ally responded by rubbing my shoulder compassionately, then added "Oh honey ninety percent of your patients have croaked since you started here, maybe you shouldn't." That's actually how I got the nick name Grimm.
Ally left, leaving me in the room alone with the JD, I didn't want to say it out loud but honestly after the massive head trauma this guy went through his chances of waking up we're slim to none. Of course the moment I finished this thought was the moment his brain wave charts started to show some activity, this was followed by his eyes flickering open.
I got up slowly still shocked by what I was witnessing, at age six I spent a year at my mothers side praying that one day her eyes would flutter open, that dream never came true. I stepped out of his room still in shocked and looked for Ally.
"Ally could you page Dr. Walker, the JD's waking up"
Part 3
I volunteered to look after JD and monitor him durning those brief moments that he was awake, after fifty three hours of him opening his eyes looking around the room and slipping back into a dead sleep, he finally awoke.
"W w-wat" it was less then a whisper but I understood what he was trying to say.
"You need to relax Mr. Uh, JD, you were in a horrible train accident and you've been in a coma for the pa-"
"Ww-water."
Not my finest hour but sadly not my worst, two days later he was finally speaking in full sentences. Every one was eager to finally get some answer but as faith would have it, he was suffering with retrograde amnesia.
Being the first person he saw when waking up I became the only person he trusted, we decided on the name JD since everyone was already use to calling him that. JD was a quiet person, at first I thought it was cause of the craziness of his situation but as time went on I realized that was just the way he was. I also learn that he was very observant by the end of the week he was able to figure out one of the nurses was having an affair with a doctor, another was addicted to Oxy, and also manage to pick up on Ally's pregnancy scare. He enjoyed salads, I guess he was a vegetarian, and got very attached to the show Brothers & Sisters, which I brought form him.
"If no one comes to claim me whats gonna happen?" the question caught me off guard, because it was something that I haven't given much thought to, thought I should have It'd been two months since he woke up and he had begun to get restless. The nurses would often find him out of bed wondering the halls, he even made it to the edge of the parking lot once before someone eventually brought him back.
"I'm not sure I think we might just put you down," I responded sarcastically.
"Your an ass."
"Well what do you want me to say it's not like we get one of you every other day."
"I've lost a year of my life here the least you guys could do is let me get a job?"
"I'll talk to the chief, but no promises."
"tell him I'll make a break for it again."
Part 4
The chief was an impatient man, and got agitated easily, and to be frank he scared me, but when I asked my superior to talk to him about JD he told me to man up so my hands were sort of tied.
The Chiefs office was bare, no family photos on the walls no book selves, just a desk and a file cabinet, the man was just to busy to decorate. The door suddenly swung open and in walked the chief, looking through a binder completely unaware of my presence. The chief wasn't what you would call a tall man in fact he was barley 5'5 but he had a way of caring himself that made him well respected by his peers. The chief had a plain Jane look about him nothing that made him stand out, except for the nose, his nose was just a little bit off it had been broken three time the first was when he was tending a drunk patient who was brought in after taking a glass bottle to the head he freaked out and nearly wreaked the ER room. I just realize I've been standing here like an idiot for the past three minutes.
"Uh sir."
"What is it Cristian?"
"Its actually Eddie," he looked up from his binder his eyes piercing through me.
"Whats your last name Eddie."
"Right, Cristian."
"So?"
"So, what sir- chief!"
"What do you need."
"Oh right, uh the JD, what exactly are your plans for him?"
"What do you mean?"
"Well its not like we can keep him locked up in the hospital for the rest of his life."
"What do you purpose we do with him?"
"Well I don't know thats why I'm asking you. - Chief."
Part 5
Apparently the chief has a sense of humor, he released JD in my custody. Its not that I have a problem with JD, he's actually one of the few decent people I've met since moving to Chicago, it's just that there is barley any room in my apartment for me to do a 360 let alone fit another person in there.
Apart of me was hoping that JD would change his mind and run back to the hospital once he saw the size of his new place but he actually seemed to love it and slept more at peace then he did at the hospital. Except for the lack of room JD was the perfect roommate, he was clean for a twenty year old, quiet, and a wizard in the kitchen.
One night when I got up to use the bathroom, I saw that he was on his laptop, this was the first time I saw him touch any of that stuff.
"What are you doing?"
"trying to see if I can unlock this piece of junk,"
"Any luck?"
"No, what kind of a jerk makes the clue, "incorrect"."
"Maybe your password is incorrect."
"It's not I tried."
We sat in silence for about an hour, I tried to understand what JD was going through and JD sat in sorrow, this was unusual for him while he was a quiet guy he always manage to seem like he was living on cloud nine. I'm not sure I liked sad JD, his demeanor was infectious. I tried to think of what happen in the last twenty four hours to make his personality do a 360 and there was only one answer.
"What do you remember?" I asked.
He hesitated before he answer not wanting to fully give himself up but eventually he cracked. "Mm-My mom and uh sister are dead."
"How-"
"And I think I might have killed them."
Part 6
JD told me that the day before while watching Robert Mcallisters death in season four of Brothers &Sisters he remember identifying both his mother and sisters body at the morgue, he also remembered the feeling of self blame and guilt he felt. I told him that didn't necessary mean he killed them and that everyone fells guilty when a love one dies. We decided to drop the conversation and try and get some sleep after all JD had to relive the grief of losing his family all over again and my guess was that the conversation of weather or not he killed them wasn't helping.
I stumbled into my bed fully knowing that I would see no sleep tonight, my mind was racing thinking of the fact that I knew nothing of the man sharing my apartment who could very well be a murder, in which case katie from human resources would win the poll. I knew nothing of what this guy was capable of hell he didn't even know what he was capable of Im beginning to think that agreeing to take in this complete stranger was a bad Idea. No that's stupid JD wasn't a stranger or a murder, at least not anymore, the dude did my laundry when he was bored for gods sake.
I then started to think of whether or not I should tell Dr. Walker about him regaining part of his memory he'd want to know what it was and what if JD actually killed his family, what if they sent him to jail for something he can't even remember, and is that even a legit met excuses not to put him in jail?
Part 7
I waited for Dr. Walker outside the OR for about an hour only to find out that I was outside the wrong OR two hours later I finally managed to corner him.
"Dr. Walker?"
"What is it Cristian?"
"It's JD-"
"Oh JD, how's he doing?"
"Find, um actually he started to remember a few things, and I was wondering if there was a chance he could regain his entire memory back?"
Dr. Walker gave me a look of shock an disturbance. "Did you say he's starting to remember?"
"Yeah."
Dr. Walker grabbed my arm and pulled me in to an empty patient room. "Listen Cristian what I'm about to say, can not be repeated to any one else. While performing surgery on JD I noticed he had a tumor, and this thing was massive it was a miracle he was still alive, I knew that even if I stopped the bleeding it would all have been useless if I didn't take the tumor out. So i went in, but as I started to take it out I notice that part of it was attracted to the Hippocampus, unfortunately by the time I notice I was to late."
"What are you saying?"
"I'm saying that it's a miracle he even remembers how to breath, let alone start to regain his memory."
"But he remembers? He remembers his mom his sister."
"Cristian listen did he tell he tell you there names what they look like or anything else about them.."
"No, but he's seem so convince he even believes he killed them."
"Well maybe he convince himself that that is true. He's probably starting to create false memory's because hes desperate to find out who he is."
"What should I do."
"Make an appointment for him down in psyche, but do not under any circumstance tell anyone let alone him about what I just told you, this hospital can't afford a lawsuit."
Part 8
I stood out side my apartment for what seemed like hours, I had no idea what to tell this guy anymore, there was no chance he would ever remember who he was and there's a good chance he's going crazy. I looked at my watch, only 30 seconds, great, I walked in.
He was on the couch the stuff from his bag laid out on the coffee table, poor guy is trying to kickstart his memory. He looked up at me not quiet as depressed as last night but not quite his usual cheery self.
"I though you doctors were suppose to live at the hospitals?"
"Yeah I have to go back in an hour, I just came home to grab something to eat and maybe take a quick shower?"
"Cool."
"So I talked to Dr. Walker today, about you memory?"
"You didn't tell him what I told you did you?"
"No I just told him you were starting to remember a few thing."
"What'd he say?"
"He said that it might be a good time to start seeing a therapist."
"Okay, you guys are paying for it right?"
"Of course.
"Well then yeah I'll do it. Have you read this?" he held up his copy of The Great Gatsby.
"Gatsby? Yeah why."
"What's it about?"
"I guess you can call it a love story."
"You guess."
"Well I mean there's a lot more to it, its also about friendship, life in the 1920, the American dream."
"What's The Great Gatsby?"
"Gatsby's a guy, who's in love with this girl from his past who he's now trying to romance again, but you know from the start that he is wasting his time, and well you should really just read it. Why the sudden interest?"
"I had a dream about it last night."
"Then read it, it might spark up some memory's." I felt like an idiot the moment it slipped out.
"I'm trying to but the books pretty much destroyed, I was wondering if you lend me some money so I can go buy a new copy."
"Yeah sure." I felt like an ass, holding his hand while he followed a trail that would lead nowhere.
Part 8
Over the next few days I threw myself into my work, I started to do longer shifts, and the only time I saw JD was when I came home for a change of cloths he was always asleep.
I came home to sleep one night, I walked in to the the apartment praying he was asleep and luckily he was. I went to my bed, three hours later I felt someone tapping me on the shoulder. I open my eyes and saw JD standing over me.
"What?"
"I need your help,"
"With what?"
"I need to go to Ojai California."
"What for."
"Theres a locker, thats what this key opens."
I sat up, "What's in it?"
"Money."
"How much money?"
"I'm not sure a lot maybe I just need to go, there might be something else maybe something that can tell me who I am."
"How do you know this?"
"The great Gatsby!"
"The Great Gatsby told you there was a locker with money waiting for you in Ojai."
"No you idiot, I remember where I got the book, it was at an outdoor bookstore in Ojai on my way to the train station."
I looked in his eyes and saw a glimmer of excitement, and suddenly the knot in my stomach untitled and I began to vomit out word after word after word until I eventually finish told JD everything that went wrong in the surgery, and how there was no way the stuff he was remembering was with out a word JD got up and went back to his couch, I followed him trying to get him to talk but he stayed silent. He stared at the ceiling motionless it was almost as if he was in a coma again, I walked back to my room seeing as it was the only thing I could do and went to sleep.
The next day I woke up, and for about five seconds I was in bliss completely forgetting that I destroyed all hope my friend had of finding out who he was. I got up and and ran from my bedroom door to the shower still not ready to face JD. I took my time in the bathroom trying to kill as much time as I could. I then ran from from the bathroom to bedroom where I decided it was time for me to organize my entire closet. About halfway through I notice something was off on my bookshelf, The tin lock box at the top had been moved, I grabbed it and saw that all the money I had it there was gone.
I left my room and saw that the couch was empty and that there was a note on the coffee table:
Dear Grimm,
I'm sorry I stole your money, but I swear to you that I will pay you back.
Part 9
I drove to the nearest train station, knowing that there was no way he was getting on a plane with proper identification, and no idea of what his last name was. I spotted JD the moment I drove into the parking lot, I ran out of the car.
"JD!"
"What are you doing here."
"Me what are you doing?"
"I'm going to Ojai."
"I told you, your making it all up."
"Okay I'm making it up, what's the harm in going! I go there realize I'm insane, what's the big deal, honestly did you expect me to sleep on your couch for the rest of my life. Maybe i did make up the locker but, maybe that's the push I need to move on with my life."
"So your gonna go to California and start a new life with a fake ID, no birth certificate, no social security, and three thousand dollars cash? That's one hell of a gamble."
"It's not a gamble, cause I know that theres a bag full of money waiting for me in Ojai, which is gonna lead me back to my old life."
My face must have shown my lack of faith.
"Come with me."
"What?"
"You so sure I'm following a dead end come with me, and if there's nothing in Ojai for me then I'll come back here, and sleep on you couch till the day I die."
I couldn't help but laugh, "I can't I have a job, and not a lot of vacation time."
"You hate your job."
"I love my job."
"Really you love being a surgeon so much you volunteered to look after a recovering comatose patient."
Dam he was right, I hated my job, the last couple days that i spent living at work I was ready to shoot myself.
"So I'm suppose, to give up my job and go with you to Ojai."
"Fine stay here and continue to cut people open."
"I get half of the money we find."
