The Things That Keep Us In

By Ana Ferguson

We Battle for control, building borders.

Borders attract violence.

Borders are a distinction,

like a visual slap to the face.

We do not like to admit we need them.

We seem to love the desire of control.

We're devoted.

The shadow of a 14-foot-high steel wall,

Nine miles of a double-layered fence,

glistening under the blistering heat.

A metal wall that slashes us,

Has found its place in the sun.
