Humans have no greater skill than that of escapism. There are those of use who spend our whole lives being someone else on TV, those of us who watch that TV for hours, those who read, those who write, those who run, draw, sleep, date, play sports, chase thrills, day-dream, dance, clean, get another job, go to parties, and so on.

I look around and, to me, it seems that our whole culture is basically escapism at its best, of course, isn't that the point? Why else would you want to have crazy music, out of control celebrities, insane amusement parks, or authors that have taken the term 'out there' to a whole new level. If we need all this to it kind of raises the question, what are we all running from? I mean, that's a lot of distraction. It's more than enough for an hour or two. In fact, all that is enough for a lifetime, or two. And then another question comes to mind: Could it be that we are all running from the same thing?

I would like to propose that yes, we are all running from a different version of the same thing and that it is this life. That no matter how good we are at pretending that everything is fine, everyone has something that they are running away from. It's not exactly 'life' though. That's just the general, universally-understood word that we would assign to it. I tend to think of what everyone else defines as running from life as running from the pain that life brings instead. I could be wrong but I believe if we really looked into everyone's hearts, that this would be the root of it all.
