[Evander POV]

When I woke up, I thought I was in a movie or something. It was unreal. I had no idea where I was, what was happening, or why I was tied to a chair. There wasn't much to see, I think it was a warehouse or a basement. Wherever it was, the air kind of tasted like dirt. Dirt and strawberries. I almost puked on the floor when I realized I could still smell that knock-out gas. After a few deep breathes, I heard something moving next to me. Now that my eyes were more or less adjusted to the dark, I could see another chair next to mine, with another person in it, a girl. The only things I could make out were that she had short hair and she had a dark, crescent shaped mark on her right wrist. I recognized it as a Celtic moon tattoo, with designs to match my own Celtic star tattoo.

My sister was here too.

"Asha…" My voice was hoarse and scratchy, a side effect of the gas. "Asha…"

"Huh?" her eyes opened and she blinked rapidly. "Where are we?"

"I-I don't know…" I admitted. I tried to shrug, but felt restraints around my arms and wrists. I tried swinging my legs, but my ankles were cuffed too. "What happened yesterday?"

"Some guys jumped us." Asha was whispering, like they were still here or something. But that didn't make sense. How could they get past the security systems? I helped design it, there were redundancies upon redundancies. There were ways to get past them, obviously, but the only people who knew were strapped to chairs in the middle of some random warehouse. We never told anyone, not even Adams or April. "So what happened before I got there?"

"It's all kind of a blur. I mean, I thought I heard something, so I texted you and grabbed the baseball bat. Then it sounded like someone knocked on the door and I thought it was you, so I opened it and this guy was there and he, like, attacked me."

"Wow…"

"Yeah. Oh and thanks a lot, by the way, for getting there so soon."

"You're seriously blaming this on me?" She was getting defensive.

"No! Not all of it! Just the part where I was caught. If you had gotten there sooner we could've taken them." I couldn't believe she wasn't getting it.

"God, you're so annoying!"

"Hey! I-"

I stopped when I heard footsteps. We both immediately froze, but winced visibly when the lights were all turned on. The entire perimeter of the room was filled with guys who looked like ninjas with football gear on. And in the middle of the room was a man in a black suit, followed by two men in lab coats, dragging carts full of what looked like medical equipment. As my eyes readjusted to the light, the black suit guy slowly came into focus. He looked suspiciously familiar. And not a minute after I realized who it was, Asha said it aloud.

"Victor Cassano?"

"In the flesh." The man in the suit smirked. Victor Cassano, the world's greatest conman. Or, at least in the technological world. He's almost as rich as us, and just as famous. He took all of our work, the years Asha and I spent creating, and switched a few things around so that it was his. Then he was somehow able to convince everyone that we were the ones who stole the design, so we settled it in court. We won, of course. Everyone's over that now, but apparently not him.

"What…why? Why are we here? Where's here?" My voice echoed in the warehouse.

"I've recently became acquainted with the medical field and stumbled upon something quite…unusual, and I wanted to test it on some 'old friends'." He was full-out smiling now, and it was pretty creepy.

"So, what you're saying is that you were so mad that we kicked your ass in court so you just dropped you're entire life's work and went to medical school. Can you say 'mid-life crisis?" Asha smirked right back at him and I thought I could see a little vein bulge in his head. I remembered that Adams said he was very volatile and easily provoked. I had watched numerous videos where someone asked him a normal question and he blew up at them. They were hilarious.

"Not exactly. You see, I was working when I discovered a new strain of germs. I managed to isolate them and thought I would show the two of you first."

"So to get back at us, you're gonna give us a cold?" I laughed. Instinctively, Asha and I went in for a high-five, but we were strapped to chairs so we just looked like idiots. We were so consumed in our wittiness that neither of us even saw him pull the gun. But suddenly, the air splits with the sound of a gunshot, and there's a dent in the floor, right between our chairs. We went silent at that. Victor waved the men in lab coats over to us, one by me and one by Asha. I may not be a doctor, but I'm not an idiot. Victor just found a random strain of germs, and he's going to inject it into us. That could be bad, very bad, or very, very bad. Anyway you look at it, it's not going to end well. I tried struggling against the restraints, but it was made of steel or something. I'm not a superhero.

The doctor by Asha moves first. He fills a syringe with a neon blue liquid, ties an orange band around her arm, and places the needle on what I know is a blood vessel. He injects the germs and everything is silent for a split second. Then she starts to scream.

It's terrible. Like every bad thing I can remember happening to either one of us crammed into a single sound. And tears are pouring down her face, which is how I know she's in pain, because the only time she's ever cried was when Mom and Dad died. Then she's shaking and screaming and crying and I'm just sitting here, able to do nothing except watch. Suddenly she stops, her eyes close, and she fades into unconsciousness.

I'm vaguely aware of what happens next. I start freaking out, because I think Asha's dead. Some of the ninja football players come and hold me down while the other doctor fills another syringe with bright orange stuff. He ties the rubber band around my arm and sticks the needle into my skin, making me jump. Nothing happened at first, but then it feels like someone is dumping ice water through my veins. Then it changes so it feels like my blood is literally boiling. I think I start screaming, I think I feel the tears involuntarily pouring out of my eyes, but I can't be sure, because I'm completely numb. I can't see anything but colorful dots, and everything sounds like it's underwater. I know what's going to happen, but it's no less scary when I pass out for the second time.
