I stared up at the pale blue, winter sky. Or the little I could see of it that is, there were a few clouds. Slowly, I closed my eyes and smiled, it was a very peaceful day.

Then someone dropped a clump of snow on my face. I quickly sat up and brushed the snow from my face. "What was that for?" I mumbled as I looked up to see my older brother Damien.

He smile sheepishly and held out his hand "I thought you were sleeping, sorry".

I took his hand and he pulled me up. "That makes dropping snow on me even worse" I said once I was standing.

Damien laughed "You were laying in the snow all morning" he said, "Besides you never get cold".

I shook my head and then Damien and I began walking back home. On the way my eyes wondered out surroundings, it had snowed the night before and everything was covered in newly fallen snow.

Suddenly Damien stopped, and looked around. There was a worried expression on his face and he seemed to be looking for something.

Then I felt a small shiver go through my spine, and I squeezed my brother's hand. I had never felt so cold before.

"What's wrong?" I asked quietly.

Damien looked down at me and offered a forced smile "Nothing".

I nodded and we continued walking as if nothing happened.

Before I knew it Damien I were walking through the front door of our family's little cabin in the woods. It was small with only two bedrooms but that was enough for Damien, my parents, and I.

Damien let go of my hand and closed the door. He then helped me take off my boots and coat.

Once they were off and put into the closet, I made my way over to the couch. About halfway there I randomly yawned. Time for another nap, I thought.

"Danika you are not going to take another nap" my father said as he came out of his room.

I looked up at him and pouted "You read my mind again, you said you would stop doing that".

Yes, you read that right, my dad read my mind. My whole family can read minds, because we're not human. No, we're werewolves.

Now I know you may not believe that but whatever, I don't really care. You believe me, then you believe me. If you don't, then just enjoy the story.

Anyways, as I looked up at my dad he just looked at me. Trying not to break and let me get my way. He failed, as always.

"Fine, take a nap" he said he went and sat in his lazy-boy recliner.

I smiled and climbed onto the couch. Before I laid down to go to sleep I decided to look out the front window to see the peaceful scenery first.

I didn't expect to see a wolf. "Look daddy" I said as I pointed.
My dad sighed as he got up and came over. He looked out for a second then practically ran out the door.

The wolf was now sitting about ten feet from the house. It looked safe enough but you never know.

"Ben?' my father asked while walking over to it. I could easily hear everything he said.

The wolf changed to its human form in about a second. No surprise there, werewolves tend to do that. The guy standing in the wolf's place looked similar to my father. Dark brown hair, pale green eyes, and of course very fit.

My father and the new comer just stared at each other for a few seconds then embraced in a 'manly' hug.

It was a couple of second before the newcomer spoke "It's good to see you Jamie". The man had a cheery voice almost like if he were to tell you your parents were dead you would still smile at his voice.

My father then smiled and led the man inside.

That was when I noticed my older brother by the door. For once he was shocked into silence.

It didn't last long. "Uncle Ben?" he asked wide eyed.

"Hey Damien" the man said as he hugged him.

Finally it was my mom's turn for a hug "I missed you too Samantha don't think you were left out" he said with a smile.

Then I stared to feel awkward. I tightly hugged the nearest pillow. Usually I only did this to feel safe but this Ben guy seemed nice so I was doing it to hide.

Slowly everyone sat down around the table and began talking. Apparently my parents forgot about their four-year-old daughter. Which was completely fine with me, it made it easier to ease drop.

"So, why are you here Ben?" my father asked curiously.

Ben laughed "What? I'm not allowed to visit my brother and his lovely family because I miss them?" he asked jokingly.

My father sighed, "Well of course you can but knowing you that's not why you came. So I suggest you tell me or I'll have to resort to the way I used to get you to tell me things as kids".

"Okay, okay no need to go there Jamie" Ben said bracing himself for what he had to say next" Jackal has started his search for you. Father did everything he could but Jackal was very determined".

My father was silent for a second "What do you mean 'determined'?" he finally asked.
Ben looked at the floor "He almost killed father".

"Almost?" my dad asked.

Ben nodded "He's in no shape to be pack leader anymore but he will live".

Both brothers went silent for a while. So I tried to piece together what Ben had said. I was a very smart kid but I was only four. There were many things I wasn't told.

I knew who Jackal was, I knew about the two packs and I knew about the pack leader rules. Now all I had to do was put it all together.

Then it hit me. There were two main packs around here, the pack of light and the pack of darkness. My mom was from the pack of darkness and my father was from the pack of light. This made Jackal hate my father. Then they had Damien. They kept him a secret from Jackal for 3 years. Until they had me everything was fine. Jackal found out about me quickly because my birthday was the pack of darkness's day of power, December 21. Jackal had almost forgotten about killing my father till he learned they had a child. It was forbidden for two people from different packs to have a child.
What I didn't understand was why he would hurt my grandfather. I guess Jackal had his reasons.

I sat up and shook my long black bangs out of my eyes. Slowly I got up and quietly walked up to my father and tapped his shoulder.

He turned to me and bit his lip "You heard all that didn't you?" He asked while picking me up and setting me on his lap.

All I could do was nod. If I even told the smallest lie my father would pick up on it in seconds.

My father turned to his brother "Your not going to let me break the rules on this one are you?" he asked quietly.

Ben shook his head slowly "I know it's a big decision Jamie but I just can't you know how Dad can be. I already told him that you wouldn't leave Samantha and that bringing them will put them in more danger. He wouldn't listen," he said lowering his

head.

My father thought for a second then glanced at my mom "Maybe it's time" he said.

She nodded and smiled at Damien "Can you pack your bag sweetie?' she asked ruffling his hair.

Damien nodded and disappeared of to our room.

My father set me on the floor and stood stretching his hands over his head. Then he turned to Ben and smiled "How about we talk about a more cheerful subject? How is Chloe?'

Ben smiled happy to change the subject and began swapping stories with my father.

I got up and brushed some dirt off my tank top. It was the middle of December but being a werewolf I wasn't cold. I always had a warm fuzzy feeling.

Then a sharp coldness stabbed through that warm fuzzy feeling. The sharp coldness of being watched by someone you didn't like.

I turned to the window and froze I couldn't see him but he was there. I walked over to my dad not letting my eyes leave the window. I tugged on his shirt "There's someone outside" my voice was quiet but everyone heard me.

My parents and Ben rushed outside while Damien grabbed my arm pulling me to our room. He shut the door and signaled for me to be quiet.

Even though we were at the back of the cabin, the window was open and I could hear everything outside. The curse of having enhanced hearing I guess.

Finally I heard a few whimpers and heard animals run through the snow.

Damien opened the door and slowly made his way outside. I followed closely behind. My mind was spinning at a hundred miles an hour trying to convince its self that my parents were fine.

It lost this battle once it registered all the blood around there bodies.

Ben sat with my father's head in his hands. My father's eyes were closed and I knew it was too late.

Damien ran to his side but I stood frozen in shock. I glanced at
my mom and knew it was too late for her too.

Ben gently rested my father's head on the ground and stood. Slowly walking to me, he put a hand on my shoulder and gripped tightly "I'm so sorry Danika but it's too late" he said softly.

I lowered my head, my vision blurred by anger "I know' I whispered. Suddenly, without warning I began bawling and I couldn't stop myself.
