(voice over)
Once upon a time, humans ruled our world. They controlled the entire planet, and everything in it. They had the power to decide whether the world as we knew it would live or die.
They chose to die.
Now that time has passed, and the real rulers of the earth lie beneath the sea: giant monsters created by the nuclear radiation, radiation caused by the carelessness of human kind, the same radiation that killed many, many humans and created us, the new creatures of this land.
We are the only people to survive the bouts of famine and radiation that beset our planet after the meteor hit, and the goverments of the world tried to blow that meteor out of the sky. We were the only ones who made it to the highest places in the world, after the seas rose and swallowed the world. We were the only ones to protect ourselves against the amphibious creatures that attacked us. We are the only people in the world still alive.
On the remaining small islands, such as the one I live on, the gene pool is very limited. The great expanses of ocean, filled with monsters, are virtually uncrossable . This has allowed the radiation, combined with harsh environmental conditions, to evolve us into different types of humans. Like the kind on my island, for instance. I lived there for nineteen happy years as the daughter of the ruler of this island, Krarliin, until the day I left my life forever.
Show first island, then AKITO (a tall girl with green eyes and short red hair) happily talking to a YOUNG MAN, obviously a servant, inside of a large, sunlit hall. They are speaking a foreign language, with the translation on the bottom of the screen.
AKITO
Have you seen Aveni or Aweque? They have been gone for a while now patrolling borders...do you know when they'll be back? The amphibian attacks have been getting worse lately- I'm worried about them.
YOUNG MAN
Your sisters, as well as your father, have instructed me to tell you that they will be back shortly.
AKITO
I'll go and see them myself; I need to get some fresh air anyway.
YOUNG MAN
I am sorry, but I have been told to insist you stay here.
AKITO
Why? I'm going, so don't try and stop me.
AKITO turns on her heel and walks quickly out of the room, and outside. She whistles to herself, then catches sight of something in the distance. She stops, then breaks into a run.
As she nears the group of people, she crouches down, moving silently toward them.
Three travelers are standing in a circle, two men and a girl about of about fifteen. At their feet lay their gliders, the only way to cross the perilous seas. One of the men is speaking to the king (AKITO'S father), KRARLIIN.
MAN
-and so we ask you to help us. The guild of kings threatens to destroy our land. We need to save our families from this attack! If nothing else, please let the weak seek shelter here. The valuble mining resources here are the only way to create the metal that will allow their armies to cross on ships! Please use these resources not for killing, but for helping refugees from Joharta escape! You are our only hope. They are coming to kill us all- we beg of you to help stop this brutal war! Please tell me that you will assist us!
Krarliin smiles, his teeth bared in a wolf-like grin.
KRARLIIN
How about not? Warriors, kill them!
The warriors surrounding the travelers spring upon them, each drawing the traditional double katanas from sheaths at their backs. The girl screams, but her end is as swift as the other two.
AKITO gasps and starts to sprint towards them, but there is nothing she can do. They are dead.
She turns on her sister, AVENI, who stands close by.
AKITO
What is going on? Why did you do this? Why did these people die? They may have been outsiders, but they came in peace, asking for assistance! They did not deserve to die! The girl was young, younger than me. How could you kill someone whose only crime has been to be persecuted by this, this guild?
She gestures angrily, but does not raise her voice, having been raised as a nobleman. AWEQUE steps forward and places a hand on AKITO'S shoulder.
AWEQUE
It's okay, Akito. It was for the best. These people where actually enemies of the wolf-warriors, and we were simply defending ourselves. They were outsiders, for the sake of Keraweiy!"
AKITO shakes head stubbornly
AKITO
No. I cannot accept that. These people only wanted shelter and assistance, and they were murdered for it! This guild of kings sounds horrible. Why don't you do something about it instead of killing innocent people?
AWEQUE takes a deep breath.
AWEQUE
Because we already belong to the guild.
AKITO takes a step back, shaking her head
AKITO
Why? We are invading another country? Causing thousands to die? Our own warriors will perish in the battle! This is wrong! Why would you condemn them to such a fate?
As a warrior from the ruling family, you have always taught me to try to do my best for my people. This battle is wrong, and that my own family would kill innocents and send our people to die is, is-
She turns away to face the ocean
AKITO
-unforgivable.
AVENI steps forward.
AVENI
Akito, you have it all wrong. We are doing what's best for all of the wolf- warriors. These outsiders invaded us again, so we stopped them, as usual. You are over reacting to a very usual occurrence.
AKITO
You kill innocents often?
KRARLIIN
Akito, you are too young to understand. We would have told you when you were ready to take on your duties as a one of the leaders of the wolves, but until then you are not ready for the truths about how this clan is truly run.
He casts a steely glare at AWEQUE and AVENI
KRARLIIN
Daughters, take Akito to her room.
AKITO takes a step back
AKITO
NO! I cannot forgive my clan for the wrongs they have committed, even-
She glances at her father
AKITO
-the ones I don't yet know about. If you insist on hiding the truth from me, then I am leaving, for I cannot stay here knowing these things.
She ducks her head in good bye, and, before the warriors can react, sprints into away towards the dense rocky outcropping that circle the island of the Wolf-Warriors.
Krarliin shouts order, and the warriors move out to follow her, but AWEQUE and AVENI stay behind, knowing that none know those hidden paths as well as AKITO, who grew up playing in them day after day. No one could catch AKITO now.
A few days later, AKITO enters a sea village, a glider strapped to her back. It looks like a normally peaceful place, but everyone is agitated and running around, looking for someone. The temple is burning. AKITO approaches and sees a stranger with her face hidden walking away from the village. Akito falls in step with her and looks her over carefully. She has longish, light brown hair in a ponytail down her back and light blue eyes. She is of undeterminable age, but seems older than AKITO.
AKITO
Excuse me, I'm…new here. Do you know what's going on?
STRANGER
Ehh..maybe.
AKITO
What happened?
STRANGER
Someone lit fireworks in the temple.
AKITO
What? Why?
STRANGER
They didn't believe in what the temple was doing. They knew that the temple was forcing people to do things that they didn't want to do. They actually noticed that the temple was corrupt.
AKITO
Oh. I see.
They walk in silence for a bit.
STRANGER
Hey, would you look and see if anyone is following us?
AKITO
Why?
STRANGER
Because I can't. I'm already too suspicious.
AKITO (looking behind her)
Um…there are actually people following us. I-is there anything you can do? I don't want to get in trouble with anyone.
STRANGER (turning to face AKITO)
Why? Because you actually feel bad if you break idiotic laws and make unethical people angry? Or because you don't like doing things that are morally wrong?
AKITO
I just don't want anyone to get hurt. But are the people here really that bad?
STRANGER
Not really. They're just angry for the wrong reasons. They'll be better off in the long run.
AKITO
Oh…but how are we going to get away?
STRANGER (grabbing AKITO'S hand and beginning to run)
Like this.
The two are walking through the woods. THE STRANGER is still obviously upset.
AKITO
So, when will you tell me your name? Or should I make one up for you?
STRANGER
What? Sorry. Not paying attention. I'll tell you mine when you tell me yours.
AKITO (after a long pause)
Akito
STRANGER
Hilde.
AKITO
I like it. Where is it from?
HILDE
Dunno. Some sort of relic my parents had.
AKITO
I see.
They walk in silence again.
AKITO
Is everything all right?
HILDE
Not really. I'm sorry; I'm usually not like this. I'm just especially angry right now.
AKITO
Can I ask why?
HILDE
I don't know. Can you?
AKITO
I just did.
HILDE
Do you want to know?
AKITO
Yes.
HILDE
I had just arrived in that town when I overheard the priest of the temple there giving a lecture on the wonders of human sacrifice.
AKITO
Keraweiy! Do they do that here?
HILDE
Not normally. So I did some digging. Guess what I found out?
AKITO
What?
HILDE
Idiot priest…he had some family on an island. Of course, everyone wants to live here, so the population is strictly regulated. Anyway, he was trying to get some people killed so he could import family.
AKITO
That's horrific.
HILDE
I know. That's why I lit up their stupid temple. Even if I believed in the Gods, I would never do something like that: kill an innocent person to have my great aunt or whatever come live with me.
AKITO
Family ties must be strong here.
HILDE
Stronger than the urge to not kill random people?
AKITO
…
HILDE
I'm sorry. I'm not usually like this, I swear.
AKITO (noticing a recognizable flower)
I've dabbled in botany, and I don't remember seeing anything about this flower. Ever.
HILDE
Really? It's pretty common here. Represents peace. It shares the name of our capital city, Montalia, but it's actually bordering on being a weed.
AKITO
It's beautiful. I knew the capitol was named for peace, but really, when you think about it, this place is peace too.
AKITO and HILDE gaze out at the gently sloping hills, wildflowers fluttering in the breeze, and a cloudless blue sky. Each has a smile on their face.
JANUS, KRARLIIN, UUUUHNG, a zombie bound and gagged and tied to a chair, YOLAND, a tired-looking woman who is alternating between nodding off and looking worriedly at UUUUHNG, SSSSSSSS, a feline man who is gazing out of a window, ALBUS, a stunning blue, white, yellow, and pink man with feathers and scaly feet, and TRUSTMARK, a seemingly indifferent, and see-through woman sit at a table, having a council of war. AWEQUE and AVENI sit on chairs beside the wall, taking notes.
JANUS
Krarliin, I have been informed that your youngest daughter has escaped to Joharta.
KRARLIIN
Akito poses no threat.
JANUS
You underestimate her.
KRARLIIN
The child is too unmotivated to do anything too worrisome. Besides, our informant would let us know if she was doing anything important.
JANUS
I repeat: you underestimate her.
KRARLIIN
Do you think that I don't know my own child?
JANUS
If you knew her well enough, she would be here taking notes.
KRARLIIN looks angry. AWEQUE and AVENI watch interestedly. Suddenly, KRARLIIN relaxes against his chair.
KRARLIIN
Fine. Aweque, pursue Akito.
AWEQUE stands.
AWEQUE
and ask her to come home?
KRARLIIN
Yes.
AWEQUE
If she resists?
KRARLIIN
She won't, I'm sure.
JANUS raises one eyebrow.
KRARLIIN
Take her home by any means necessary.
HILDE and AKITO enter a small town.
HILDE
So, do you have any sort of training in weapons?
AKITO
Yes, actually.
HILDE
That'll be good, if you're planning on staying with me. Any particular favorites? I can help you get your hands on some.
AKITO
I've trained with two katanas. There is a special kind at home that I use, but they are rare, even at home, and I left my pair there.
HILDE
Would some normal swords work?
AKITO
Yes.
HILDE
Great. There's a small weaponry store here. It's to the left of town. Go and say that I sent you. You might get something for free.
AKITO
Um, where?
HILDE
I'll just show you.
HILDE walks through the small town. There aren't many people out, but the ones who are wave and smile. HILDE waves back. They reach a small shop, and they enter.
STORE MANAGER
Here comes trouble.
HILDE
This girl? Don't worry. I frisked her for weapons before coming in. Of course, that won't be helpful here.
STORE MANAGER
No, I wasn't talking about the menacingly tall girl in black you brought in. I'm talking about you.
AKITO
Menacingly tall?
HILDE
I'm offended.
STORE MANAGER
And, to set the record straight, you have no stuff stored here.
HILDE
What are you talking about these-
She grabs two swords off the wall and begins twirling them
HILDE
-belong to me.
STORE MANAGER
No, they don't.
HILDE
You suck.
STORE MANAGER
You aren't getting the swords for free again.
HILDE
They aren't even for me.
STORE MANAGER
Coming from you, that's actually slightly convincing
HILDE
Half price?
STORE MANAGER (handing them to her)
I'm crazy. Truly crazy.
HILDE
Thanks forever!
AKITO sits in the common area of a humble, but nicely furnished inn. She obviously feels out of place, and is sharpening her swords. HILDE walks down the stairs in a kimono-like dress, with wet hair.
HILDE
Damn…I feel almost human.
AKITO
Great.
HILDE
Yes. I know. I try very hard.
A kid runs up and gives her a big hug.
KID
Hildy!
AKITO smirks.
HILDE
Hey!
KID
When'd you get here? How long are you staying? Wait, I'm going to go tell sis that you're back!
He runs off, excitedly.
AKITO
Nice…he really likes you.
HILDE
Ha…I have no idea why.
The two walk back to the room to get their stuff. When they open the door, AWEQUE is rifling through their drawers.
