Ugh. Remind me why I even bother to go on school field trips at all. I absolutely hate school busses, and on every field trip you had to take one. People spit and wipe all their germs on the back of the seat and then you just have to go and sit on one. And the fact that the teacher has to take attendance before we get on the bus is just so immensely long.

"Evan" The teacher called, speaking monotone.

"Not here" Evan replied using the sarcasm that makes everyone on the bus laugh. I absolutely detested the class jokers. I found them annoying and the fact that saying something using sarcasm takes longer then just saying 'here' really pisses me off.

"Sandy" the teacher called, head raised. Every teacher in the school knew that Sandy doesn't like to talk in front of everybody. If she can get away with just raising her hand or nodding her head, then she will.

"Sam" The teacher's name was Mr. Burns. Sam jumped up with his hands above his head and slapped his belly while saying

"It's Belly Jelly to you Burns." He made everyone on the bus laugh. He was just another class joker. Mr. Burns' straight face turned into a frown as he spoke.

"Tara" Tara, my best friend who happened to be sitting next to me shouted over the noisy bus "Here".

"Jason" Mr. Burns said with a smile.

"Here" Jason replied. Jason was the ultimate high school guy. He was quarterback for the football team and he was also the teachers' pet. I was literally the only girl in the school without a crush on him.

"Vanessa" Mr. Burns said. "Here" I replied. Mr. Burns was the only person (student or staff member) in the entire school who didn't call me by my nickname Nessa. Now that my name had been called, I turned on my IPod and put the headphones on and zoned out.

Our school is the only school that does nighttime field trips. Tonight it was to the Observatory, which just happened to be two and a half hours away from our school. Already it was getting dark out and finally the bus pulled out of the school parking lot. I hate school buses because they are so noisy. Evan and Sam, who were sitting across the aisle from me, were poking Sandy who was sitting in front of them. This was going to be a long night, I could tell. There wasn't a lot of traffic at night and yet there was a van following us and the kids sitting at the back of the bus were making signals at the van. A lot of kids were trying to sleep.

Tara and I were sitting at the very middle of the bus. Just then Sam turned to look at me. I took out my headphones and said with a sigh

"What?" I asked him rolling my eyes.

"I thought you might want to know that I voted for you as the class president, which Mr. Burns said that he would announce once we were on the road tonight." Sam replied. I can't say that I was shocked. Sam has had a crush on me since the third grade. Of course, this is totally a one-way thing. I couldn't hate Sam more.

"And you think that just by saying that, I'll go out with you? Because if you do, you should know that you're more wrong than ever." I said trying to make him agitated with me.

"No matter what I do, you don't seem to be falling for me." Sam stated.

"Was that supposed to be a question?" I asked.

"Why, Nessa? No matter what I do, no matter how I do it, it never seems to work on you. Is it that I'm not romantic enough for you?" Sam asked.

"Listen to yourself man. You know to never tell a girl that you're trying to go out with her. You should know that by now! And yet, you haven't even asked her out yet so technically, man, she hasn't turned you down yet!" Evan butted in on the conversation.

"True!" Sam turned to look at me. "Nessa, will you go out with me?"

"Listen Sam" I started. He'd never actually asked me before and I didn't know how to turn him down so I said "If I win the class election, I'll consider the offer" The chances of me winning are slim. All the popular guys wanted the popular girls to win and all the popular girls wanted the popular guys to win, and then there was me so I practically just turned him down without saying no.

Mr. Burns stood up.

"Alright, quiet down, quiet down. I have to say that it was mostly anonymous. There was one vote for Sandy." Sandy's head lifted to look at Mr. Burns, her shoulders shrugged and then she went back to reading her book. That vote had been mine and that was just sad. "There were two votes for Jason," The girls in the back giggled, they obviously voted for him "and all the other votes went to... Vanessa!"

Mr. Burns sat back down while Tara turned to me and patted me on the back then Sam turned to me and said,

"So what's it going to be?" I rolled my eyes at him and put my IPod headphones back in my ears.
