"Amy!" The woman of twenty-three looked up. She scowled at the figure of her old friend running towards her.
"Yes, Jennie?" Amy asked, not bothering to hide her annoyance. She hated getting interrupted from her reading. It was that rare time when Amy could relax.
"I found you a date to the movie!" Jennie squealed.
"Oh, woo-hoo," Amy said sarcastically. "Tell me, is he another stud?"
It was Jennie's turn to frown. "No. He's a really nice guy, and his name is Terrence."
"Terrence, right," Amy replied. She rolled her eyes, and closed her book. "Because that doesn't sound like a stud name at all."
"Give him a chance? Please?" Jennie asked. She gave her friend extremely large puppy eyes. "Pleasepleaseplease…"
"What are we seeing, and when are we seeing it?" Amy asked.
"The Dark Knight Rises. We'll be by around 7:30 to pick you up!" Jennie squealed in excitement.
"Yeah, yeah, could you not squeal?" Amy asked, wincing. Her friend was so loud sometimes.
"Oh, I… eh he, sorry." Jennie smiled sheepishly. "Well, I have to get to work. My boss wouldn't want me to be late!" Jennie worked at a Starbucks as a barista.
"Okay, see ya." Amy sighed. She had nothing to do, since she was still in school. It was Saturday , she didn't have classes on the weekends.
Just that much closer to being an English teacher, Amy thought. Even though she didn't want children of her own, Amy was still good with them. They seemed to love her.
Amy checked the clock. One in the afternoon. Six and a half hours of freedom. The woman sighed.
Time passed, and Amy found herself staring at her reflection in her mirror. She was wearing a thin-strapped short blue dress. It was rather tight and was something she wouldn't really wear. But, oh well. Jennie had picked it out for the double date she had been planning for quite a while, probably since she had become Dave's girlfriend, which was a good six months ago.
Amy's cell phone rang. It buzzed on the table, as the melodic jingle of "Ode to Joy" played. She picked it up. "Hello?"
"Hey! It's Jennie!"
Amy suppressed a sigh. "Hi, Jennie."
"We'll be coming to get you in half an hour, alright?"
"Yeah, sure." Amy hung up with a loud sigh. She looked back at herself in the mirror. Why am I doing this?
The ringing of her doorbell surprised Amy. She walked to the door and opened it. Her mouth turned down in a frown. "Yes? Who are you? What do you want?"
It was a young man, who looked like he was around her age. He had dark hair that was shot. He wore a dark black jacket and a white tank top, with some baggy jeans. His eyes were a rough hazel. He looked at Amy's face.
"I'm your date," he replied simply. His eyes travelled lower, and he grinned. "And I'm super lucky that I am…"
Amy rolled her eyes. It would be a long night. "If you're done ogling my boobs, would you mind telling me who you really are?"
"My name is Terrence Helding," the man replied, his eyes reluctantly meeting hers. "I'm the man who will be escorting you to the movies."
"Well, you sure look like you're prepared." Amy's frown deepened.
Terrence sighed impatiently. "I'd love to chat, Sweetheart, but we have a movie to catch. And I'm not one to get to places late."
Amy would've loved to keep on arguing with Terrence had she enjoyed getting to movies late. But she didn't, so grudgingly she clambered into the passenger seat.
"Alrighty." Terrence grinned, and took out a pair of sunglasses.
"Too cool for everyone else on the road?" Amy asked, her voice harsh.
Terrence looked over at her. He looked at her from over his shades. "You bet, Sweetheart."
Amy rolled her eyes. She crossed her arms, keeping her eyes in front of her. With a glance at Terrence she frowned even more. She pushed his head so it was facing the road.
Minutes passed, and Terrence was calmly driving down the street. He suddenly turned to the right and into a forest.
Amy sat up. "What are you doing?"
"We're going through a forest."
"Uh huh. And if you wanna get to the movie on time we're gonna go through this forest. Alright?"
Amy sat back. The car continued through the forest. When the forest seemed to thin and the trees looked taller than before, the car spluttered and came to a lame stop.
"What happened?" Amy asked. She didn't know much about cars, but it felt right to ask.
"We must've run out of gas." Terrence got out of the car and offered to help Amy out. The woman frowned at his offer and got out herself. "So, where are we?"
"Hell if I know," came the response. Terrence honestly didn't know. He hadn't been around here before. Amy turned around and started to head to the car. She suddenly tripped and ended up falling on her face. Sitting up, she saw that she had tripped on…a giant acorn? It came up to her waist if she stood.
"What…" Amy stood up, looking confused. She turned to look at Terrence. "You!" Amy marched up to him and slapped him across the face. "This is all your fault, you stupid, sick, dirty –"
She didn't continue. An acorn had fallen on her head, and knocked her out. Terrence managed to catch her in his arms. He stared at Amy's face for a few moments. It looked beautiful now that it wasn't spastic with anger.
A rustling sound caught Terrence's attention. He moved Amy behind a tree and hid himself. His brown eyes almost popped out of his skull when he saw what it was.
It was a giant boy. A good forty feet tall, walking through the forest…
