I ran as hard as my legs would carry me and didn't dare look back. My mind raced as a tidal wave of bewildered thoughts ricocheted off the inside walls of my skull, each demanding as answer that I didn't have. How exactly could I explain what I'd just seen there? It moved and it spoke to me. 'The zodiac,' it croaked in that ugly, raspy voice as it reached out a putrid, decayed hand toward me. It was like something out of a horror movie; the way its rotten skin slid off its decomposed form and hit the ground with a sickening 'plop''. How its bones let out grunts of protest as it struggled to bring itself into a sitting position. I ducked behind a cluster of shrubs and tucked my head in between my knees. Dead bodies didn't just come to life and talk to you.
What exactly did it mean by 'the zodiac'? And how did it know my name? I held up my hands and watched them tremble uncontrollably. Should I call the police? Should I keep running? But where? I didn't know where I was! How was I supposed to find my way back into town when I didn't even know which direction to go in? What if nobody even noticed my absence? What if I never got out of here?
Calm down! I squeezed my eyes shut and wrapped my arms around my quivering knees.
There had to be an explanation to this. There just had to be. Dead bodies didn't just get up one day and talk to you. Dead bodies didn't just know you name like that. But what was the explanation? How did it know who I was? Why did I—
Snap! The sound seemed to carry through the tense silence of my surroundings like an echo through a cave. I froze and my heart seemed to stop in its tracks. I held my breath and waited. I felt cold all over, like all the warmth had been sucked out of my body. You're hearing things, a small voice said inside my mind as I hugged myself to keep from running off. Maybe it was just a squirrel passing by or a rabbit. Maybe I was just panicking over nothing—
Another twig snapped, this time to my left. I wasn't panicking over nothing after all. I had heard it. I suddenly wasn't alone anymore. Something was out there. Something had followed me out of the cave and back into the woods. But what? Who? Who was out there? I closed my eyes and listened. The footsteps sounded heavy as they crunched their way toward me, growing louder with each step.
And then a sudden realization made my heart sink to my knees.
That dead corpse had followed me out here. I was sure of it. Who else knew that I was lost in the woods? It knew my name and it had wanted me to get closer to it, to touch it, to talk to it. I shuddered as the image flashed through my mind. It had to be it. It had to be. Who else could it have been?
Crunch! It was here. It had found me. And now, it was going to devour me and nobody would ever know what happened to me.
I screamed and rolled out of the way as a pair of hands reached out for me, fingers hastily groping through the thick brush of shrubs to cease me within its grip.
"Please!" I pleaded and struggled against its grip on the sleeve of my coat. "Don't kill me! Please- don't kill me!"
