Susie Ryan. Susie. Ryan. Susie Tabitha Ryan. Sitting serenely in the shallow water on slick stones, Susie soaks in the evening sun and savors the warm sensation of the slow lapping current. When she bends and moves to stand, her foot slips between the stones, her ankle twists and she screams as she swirls to, breaking the surface. Susie is jolted by the experience, heart spluttering and respiration stuttering. Unable to swing herself upright, she flounders and staggers.

"Susie, Susie," she concentrates on the sound of her name being sung in the distance.

"Susie, Susie!" sliding and slipping to reach the shore, she finally stumbles to steady land. Sweet mother in the distance singing her name, Susie sprints to bring assurances.
