I'm standing on the edge of the drop-off looking down. I just stand there for a second as I watch the ground 200 feet below. My heart is beating faster just standing there and my breath comes a little faster. I step away from the edge and walk away from it. Once I've moved away from it, I turn around and look at it again. From 30 feet away it doesn't look quite so frightening or intimidating. Sure says a lot about perspective.
I take a few moments to just stand there, almost like I'm contemplating my next move but I'm really just standing there. There's not a whole lot going through my mind really. And once that moment is over, I start running.
I reach my fastest in seconds. The running itself is invigorating. It's like flying as the wind blows my hair out behind me like the line that's left in the sky after a jet flies by. I watch as the edge draws nearer and nearer, until, all of a sudden I'm there and there is no more ground to cover. Both of my feet touch the edge at the same time and for a second, I just hang there, stuck in that crazy place where gravity hasn't yet taken full control.
Then I jump and the feeling of flying is replaced by actually doing it.
I somehow end up on my back and, as I fall through the air, I stare at the sky. I love how beautiful it is. The clouds gently rolling onwards not caring what's going on beneath them and then the unbroken blue that is calm and undisturbed by anything. I feel my body start to flip and rotate slowly in the air when -
"SAM!" I hear someone scream my name and feel arms wrapping around my body. I jerk out of my dream so suddenly that I'm concerned about whiplash. I blink in just-woken-up confusion at the pretty red-head standing in front of me. "Happy Birthday" She says as she jumps onto the bed and maneuvers herself so that she's sitting next to me.
I push my tangly blonde hair back out of my face and grab at the nearest blanket, suddenly self-conscious about my choice of pajamas, a tank top and some shorts that are too short to wear out in public.
"What are you doing here?" I ask still not fully awake or I would have noticed that she'd already stated her reason for being here.
She grabs the end of the blanket and slips under it with me. I cuddle up next to her almost instinctively and all of my self-consciousness disappears as I lean my head up against her shoulder. She reaches up and tousles my hair, which since it was already so messy, doesn't have much of an effect.
"Kate" I say trying to get even closer to her. "I love you."
