Training: Part One
"Okay," Parker says slowly. "So, I guess we're not doing training today."
"At least not the usual way," I interrupt. "Why don't you all practice as usual and I'll pull one of you aside at a time and try to figure out the best way for you to strengthen your gift?"
"Sounds good," Julian nods. "Who's up first?"
I frown. I hadn't thought of that yet. "I don't know," I shrug. "Who wants to go first?"
Everyone raises their hand—even Dane—and I sigh. "Okay then," I nod. "Jace, you're up."
He blushes. "Why me?" he asks.
I shrug. "Hell if I know," I laugh, walking away, expecting him to follow. I lean against the wall and wait as he shuffles over to me.
"So…what do I do?" he asks.
I bite my lower lip. "Well," I say, shifting uncomfortably. "That's the problem with my gift. I Know you can do more, but I don't exactly Know how. It can be a pain in the butt sometimes."
"So you don't Know everything?" he asks me.
I shake my head. "In a way it's a lot like Parker's gift. He can see the future, but not all of the future. I Know things, but not everything. It's really kind of hit or miss honestly." I shrug one shoulder. "Let me think for a minute."
Jace doesn't say anything and I close my eyes, trying to come up with a brilliant solution, but I honestly don't know. The fact that they all can enhance their gifts just kind of hit me like a Mack truck without warning. I can already feel a headache coming on.
"Sometimes I just get random flashes of Knowledge," I say absently. "Like wherever my Knowledge comes from is leaking," I mutter.
"That sounds gross," Jace says.
I laugh. "I'll give you that."
"I would imagine the only way to speed up my regeneration process would be to practice," he sighs. I nod slowly, not really processing his words. Then my eyes snap open and I scream as blood spatters my face.
"Ewww!" I shriek, scrubbing at my face. "Did you seriously just cut off your own freaking hand!?" I shout at him.
Jace looked dispassionately at his severed hand and shrugs. "I have to in order to practice," he says.
I shake my head. "Oh that is just wrong," I moan, still shaking my head. "I need to sit down." I plop onto the floor.
"I just cut my hand off and you need to sit down?" Jace asks, staring at his stub of a hand. I can see that it's growing and look away before I puke.
"I'm not used to it, okay?" I ask, covering my eyes.
I feel a hand on my back. "Just breathe," Haven tells me. "It's okay."
I breathe in deeply and glance up at her. "Jace," I say. "I can't work with you right now because I feel like I'm going to be sick."
Jace shrugs and walks away. "I can work with you," Haven says softly.
I nod once. "M'kay," I mutter, my cheeks pale.
"Alice," Haven sighs. "You're going to have to get used to that. He does it when he's bored."
"Isn't that sort of like cutting only…more?" I ask.
Haven looks at Jace and blows out another sigh. "He's kind of awkward," she says. "I think he does it for attention because the guys think it's hilarious. Okay…so Dane thinks it hilarious."
I scowl at the floor. "Dane is a prick."
Across the room Reily bursts out laughing and narrowly avoids getting punched in the head by Waverly who gives her a weird look. Haven shrugs. "He's really not. He's just trying to decide if he trusts you or not."
"Well, I wish he'd hurry up and figure it out." I mutter.
"He will," Haven nods. "He doesn't want to rush it because you might turn on us and he doesn't want to trust you in that case. But I think he'll get over it."
"Is that your gift speaking?" I wonder.
"No, I'm just that damn smart." She sends me a cheeky smile and I laugh.
"Okay, okay, let's get down to business. Your gift is empathy, right? So you can feel what other people feel. So, logically, the next step up is to change what other people feel."
"Easier said than done," Haven sighs.
"Just try it," I say. "Okay, what am I feeling?"
"Nervous, scared, lonely…" Haven blurts. I blink quickly. "Sorry," she says sheepishly.
"Okay, now try to turn that into…anger. That shouldn't be too difficult." I hope.
Haven nods and tries closing her eyes. She breathes in deeply and focuses. And then she tries staring at me intently. I shift uncomfortably beneath her stare. She blows out a sigh. "I can't," she whines.
I shake my head. "Just imagine pushing anger onto me. Dump it onto my shoulders," I tell her. "Try again."
She shakes her head, but closes her eyes again. I can practically see her visualizing dumping a large rock marked 'anger' on me. And slowly, I feel little wisps of annoyance creep into my brain, but it's quickly washed away with excitement.
"You almost had it!" I cry.
Everyone glances at me and I blush. "Keep working on that," I say. "Don't try big emotion jumps though. Keep it simple. You know like annoyance to anger, and sadness to grief. Stuff like that. And don't warn anyone you're doing it either. That way you know it's genuine."
Haven grins and skips away happily. Reily is in front of me in a heartbeat. "My turn," she says.
Waverly pouts across the room and I know that she was looking forward to going next. I motion her over and she runs to me, dropping down beside Reily.
"I don't know how I can help you Reily," I tell her. "It's like weight lifting. The more weight you lift, the stronger you get. And you can add more weight to get stronger. Try stretching your hearing a little at a time until it gets easy and then stretch it farther. How far can you hear already?" I ask.
Reily shrugs and slips her headphones off. She winces and throws a glare at Salem as he grunts loudly. "There is someone Above who has a cold," she tells me. "they keep sniffling and sneezing."
"You can hear things happening Above?" I ask.
She nods. "Yeah."
"The ground muffles it some. She can hear more when she's not underground," Waverly tell me.
I grin. "Sweet," I say.
Reily sighs and slips her headphones back on. "Thanks," she says halfheartedly, standing.
Waverly frowns at her as she sulks away. "I wish there was more I could do," I say sadly.
"Don't worry," Waverly says, touching my arm. "She bounces back quickly."
I smile faintly and sigh, rubbing my temples. "Guess you can start practice by trying to get rid of my headache," I say softly.
She frowns. "You're head?" she asks. "Maybe you shouldn't work so hard," she tells me. "Too much strain on one person isn't good."
I shake my head lightly. "I need to get tougher," I say. "I can't be a little pansy when the Officials want me."
"True," Waverly grins. "Very true." She touched my forehead and closes her eyes. "But a pansy wouldn't have pushed someone that didn't even like them out of the way of a car."
I blush and close my eyes as well so I stop trying to go cross-eyed looking at her fingers on my forehead. "Feel better yet?" she asks.
"Uh…no," I say uncomfortably. "Actually I think it's getting worse."
She snatches her hand away quickly. "This is going to take a while," she says. "I hope you're in for a long night."
bookppl93- Nah, he doesn't work like that. :)
Ori Lee- I'm trying. :( I got two in today though! I like Alice and Dane fighting now that she's getting more confident as she gets to know everyone better.
Nyx'sReincarnation- I kind of wanted it to seem random. She explained it a little here about how sometimes things just hit her when she's least expecting it. "Like wherever she gets her knowledge from is leaking." I hope that makes sense.
