Chapter 1
The ringing of the school bell, signalling next lesson, echoed through the school halls, as swarms of pupils charge through the corridors to their classrooms. "Anyone who's anyone is going to this party", Rebecca pleaded, "It going to be the hottest party ever, all the jocks will be there, cheerleaders, bands, swimming pools, alcohol". Her dark, brown hair fell perfectly onto her shoulders and her tanned skin and stunning complexion caught everyone's eye as she walked through the school wearing her skimpy, purple dress holding her school books and white files, begging me to go Jonathon Field's, a college freshman's, Party.
"We're lucky to be even invited to a college party", Becca kept repeating as I pushed my way through the crowd of students outside the classroom door, into my chemistry lesson. As I looked at the rows of two seating tables, skimming up and down the classroom to see if there were any free seats, I caught eyes with my boyfriend Harry and went sat next to him. Our bald, short, fat teacher, who had different hydrocarbon chemical formulas printed on his tie, started raving on about how chemistry would assist us in our everyday lives when we graduated from high school. Looking at the beaker in front of me, I fixated on the bubbles rising from the hydrochloric acid and stared at my reflection in the glass. Suddenly, Harry put his arm round my waist, waking me up from my trance.
Trying to catch up on what are teacher had just explained, his face had no expression – the atmosphere became tense. "You're not going to this 'College Party', are you?" Harry's voice became very forceful and felt very threating. I felt my hold body shiver as I looked into his eyes; he stared so powerfully back at me, as if he controlled me. Acting impetuous, I started responding to him angrily and felt myself becoming very agitated. "You're MYgirlfriend and I have decided that you're not going to this party!" He shouted, he was acting like such a jerk; I had never seen him like this before. We started arguing and it was becoming very heated; we had almost forgotten we were in a lesson. "Miss Tate and Mr Frederick, can you please leave your private lives outside of lessons"! Mr Thatcher's annoying voice echoed through my ears and we got back to work.
I walked out of the door, the bell endlessly ringing, feeling humiliated after the way Harry acted towards me in front of everyone. Staring at my feet, trying to draw attention away from myself, Becca bumped into me. "I've just have the worst fallout Harry, it was so embarrassing" I said, cringing at every word that came out of my mouth. We walked into the school cafeteria, searching for a table through mountains of students spread all over the large, rectangular, white hall. "Kate and Becca", Ashley, who was the head of the cheerleading squad, shouted "You both come and sit with us"!
Most people would agree she was the prettiest girl at our school; she had beautiful, long blonde hair, her face and skin were perfect and she had an amazing body all girls would die for. Although I had known Ashley all my life and I was part of the cheerleading team, everyone knew that if Ashley wanted to speak to you, it was because she wanted something or she wanted to know something. Becca left me to go and get some food sat on this table full of pretentious, perfect and popular girls who would always be the cause of any gossip circulating throughout the school. All their hair was perfectly curled, they all wore there cheerleading uniform all the time- I have no idea why. It made me laugh when I saw them all eating there small bowls of salad for lunch to keep in 'good shape' because they were 'cheerleaders'. "So, what's the deal with you and Harry?" Ashley said innocently, making me feel patronised in front of everyone at the table. I tried to change the subject, everyone knew what a gossip Ashley was and I for one did not want to talk to her about anything going on in my life. But good old Ashley had to keep asking it over and over again making me feel extremely uncomfortable. I just told her that we were fine and I had no idea what she was talking about, although half the people at the table were in the chemistry lesson which made it even more awkward. Finally Becca finished her lunch and I sprinted out of the hall feeling so relieved.
Walking home from school, I put my earphones in, fake smiled and said by to everyone outside the school sitting on the stone steps. Surprisingly, Harry came up behind me and started hugging me and telling me he loved me. He then decided he would attempt to make out with me while we were in front of all our class mates and, 'which must have slipped his mind', that I was furious with him. I carried on walking down the schools steps, across the road until him grabbed my wrist really tightly and started shouting at me. "What is your problem" I said trying to get him off me. The more I tried to pull away, his grip got tighter on my wrist. "You're MY girlfriend, and you're NOT going to this party". "It's just a party and you're lucky to be even calling me your girlfriend after the way you've been treating me today", I screamed at him, trying to get some of my dignity and power back, "And how dare you think you have any say in what I choose to do". He let go of my wrist and I stormed off, trying to comprehend what had just happened.
Kicking my shoes of onto our white porch, I ran into my house; searching for my mum. I skimmed our grand lounge room which had tall, white walls, long silk curtains and a huge chandelier in the centre of the roof. "Hi Granny" I quickly said to my Grandmother, sitting on the couch, with curly, blonde hair and eccentric, colourful makeup. Searching the house, Mum didn't seem to be home, so I asked Granny where she was and she said she had gone to the shops. My phone started beeping;
Harry: I am coming to your house. I need to see you, I love you x
Me: I am really not in the mood to see you right now; please can we talk another time?
Harry: I love you Kate, why do you hate me so much? Don't you want to work things out? Why don't you want us to be together? I'm on my way.
Something was up with Harry; I didn't want to see him again if he was acting the way he was after school. "Gran, I'm going to go to the shops to see if Mum wants any help with the shopping", I shouted, "Don't let anyone in the house unless it's mum or I, okay? I love you". I couldn't face seeing Harry right now, he needed some space to cool off. Although I was only aloud to drive the car with an adult supervising, I had to go before Harry got to my house.
I ran outside, through the front garden. "We're you going Kate?"- His voice sent shivers up my spine as I turned around to see him standing on my front porch. I kept on running to the driveway, hoping he would go once he saw me drive off. "Kate", he said in an almost smug voice, "You can't run away from me, we need to talk". Locking all the doors, I started driving off in the dark, blue land rover. Speeding towards the shops, I could see in my side mirror that Harry had started following me. Struggling, not knowing what to do, I decided to take a different route to confuse him. Pushing my foot down on the accelerator, I started speeding across the bridge. Looking behind to see if Harry was still there, the car started spinning and I lost control. Panicking, I slammed the breaks but the car went flying through the railing on the side of the metal, white bridge.
