Fear.
Noun: An unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.
Fear wasn't the perfect word, but it was the first to reach Nora's tongue.
Fear, fear, fear. That was the only name for it.
A creak in the wood made her freeze, her breath catching in her throat. Pain tugged at her chest. Small thumps – footsteps – came from outside. They were walking by the door. A small shadow appeared under the door, two black lines in the dimly lit hall creeping into the pitch black room.
Caroline clutched Nora's hand tighter, her other hand visibly trembling as it tried to hold the camera steady. It was a good idea to record everything. Nora had never expected Caroline – of all people – to pull out her video camera and film, no matter what.
The two shadows stopped, positioned parallel to the girls, and stayed like that for a moment. The girls could hear their breathing, fast and stressed, almost considered hyperventilating. The room was so cold, its presence freezing everything it passed, and the sweat on Nora's back made her shudder. She was so cold and afraid.
The shadows turned, moved away, a thump, thump, thump, with every step. The sounds grew fainter, the steps leaving them be. Nora let out a breath she didn't know she was holding.
Caroline whimpered to herself, "We're gonna die. We're gonna die."
Nora turned to the blonde girl, shocked at her voice and statement. She said it so surely, like she just had a vision of it happening moments before it did.
"What makes you say that?" Nora whispered back, trying to give the other girl a reassuring smile. Her lip trembled as she tried to lift it.
The blonde simply shook her head, muttering her words without looking away from the door. Nora simply gave up on her, frowning over the fact that Caroline was accepting death so easily.
"What room are we in?" Nora whispered, reaching for the camera. Caroline handed it to her without objection, merely went on about how they were going to die. Nora held the camera steady, peering at the screen displaying the room. It was as dark as the room itself.
"The night vision isn't on." Nora ran a finger over the buttons and found the night vision, switching it on immediately. She screamed at what was before her and dropped the camera, scrambling back toward Caroline.
The camera was on the ground, absolutely still. And then it moved, lifting from where it had been dropped, until it was eye-level with the thing Nora had seen.
"Smile for the camera, girls," Fear said. It's voice was childish. Was it taking the form of Nick's sister again? "We want to go out with a bang, don't we?"
All Nora and Caroline could do was scream.
But who would hear them?
Prologue, I guess. Next chapter should follow soon.
