Wolves: Book 1

Chapter 1

Kate was running for her life, her clothes snagged on the branches of the trees as she ran through the forest; she kept glancing behind her seeing the massive black animal chasing after her. She carried on running, the animal was growling and snarling behind her; she had a stitch in her side but she continued to run. Suddenly she tripped and landed face first in the dirt, the animal's growl became louder and that's when Kate realised it had finally caught her. She could hear the animal's growl as it approached her, she could smell it's breath of wet dog, she silently and slowly turned her head so she could see what the animal was. Her mouth opened in a silent scream as she saw a massive wolf standing over her covered in shaggy black fur, she could only look at its face for a few seconds before the wolf growled and then sunk its teeth into her. Kate was screaming her lungs off as the wolf's teeth tore her flesh causing blood to gush out onto the forest floor.

Kate! Kate! A voice yelled

Kate woke up screaming and covered in sweat, she felt someone's hand on her and she immediately panicked and screamed louder until she realised she was staring into the eyes of her father. He had a look of concern on his face, but she was still shocked at her dream it felt so real; she however knew why she had the dream she was up late last night studying for her mythology exam today and she had fallen asleep reading a book about werewolves.

"Kate, are you alright" her dad asked

"Fine dad, just a nightmare" she replied with a small smile

In the bathroom Kate looked at herself in the mirror, she was a pretty girl with long brown hair and piercing green eyes. Her full name was Kate Macready and she lived in the small town of Greenwood Oregon with her father Daniel, who also happened to be the sheriff of the town. She was a lonely girl at school, now that she had entered her junior year she only had five friends; but she rarely wanted their company and they understood why. Ten years ago Kate's mother was hiking in the woods, when she was attacked by a wolf. Kate still hadn't worked up the courage to go into the woods again and she was absolutely terrified of Wolves, her friends understood this about her and they didn't blame her for being distant most of the time.

"Kate, hurry up or you'll be late for school" her father shouted from downstairs.

"Okay dad" Kate shouted back

When Kate arrived in the kitchen, she saw her dad sitting at the kitchen table eating pancakes and reading the newspaper. She smiled at the seen before sitting down opposite him and starting to eat her own pancakes, her dad finished his pancakes and finally pulled the paper to his face so she could now read the headline on the front page.

Sixth Hiker Found Dead

Kate had been following this story a lot; some animal was loose in the woods around the town and was attacking and killing hikers. Her dad was becoming frustrated, as sheriff it was his duty to try and find the animal but so far no luck; but Kate knew the real reason why he was becoming frustrated was because of what happened to her mother, her dad never found the animal that attacked her and it had been eating at him since. He was also still angry that her body disappeared, they took it to the morgue but by morning it had gone.

"Are you ready for your mythology exam today"? Her dad asked from behind the paper

"Yes, although I don't know why we have to do mythology anyway" Kate moaned

"Because it's an interesting subject" her dad answered putting down the paper

"A stupid one more like" Kate mumbled

"Just try your best Kate, now go on get out of here" her dad said smiling and gesturing her to get out.

Kate grabbed her schoolbag and left the house; she climbed into her truck and started the engine. She started to reverse out of the driveway when a motorcycle zoomed past the truck; Kate instantly hit the brakes hard. The owner of the bike stopped too and looked at her, although the rider wore a helmet she still knew who he was. His name was Michael Dunham and he was a moody guy who sat at the back of her English, history and mythology class; he started up his bike again and rode away. Kate reversed her truck into the road thinking what an absolute prick Michael was, she turned on the radio and her favourite band Green Day came on. She drove to the school singing along to the radio, she turned a corner and there standing in the middle of the road was a man in a long black coat; Kate hit the brakes hard for the second time that morning. Once the car had stopped Kate looked up only to find the man had disappeared, she got out of the truck and looked around but whoever he was he had gone. She got back in the truck and calmed herself; once she stopped her heart from beating wildly she continued driving on to school.

The halls were full of teenagers happily chatting away, all of them were happy to be with their friends even if they were in school. Kate however wasn't smiling as she got books out of her locker, that mysterious man frightened her he just appeared and then disappeared quickly it was like he wasn't even human. Kate shook those thoughts out of her head and headed off to home room.

When Kate entered home room she immediately proceeded to the back and sat down next to her friend Jean Poole. Before even Jean could say hello Kate started telling her about the mysterious man in the long black coat.

"Are you sure you actually saw someone"? Jean asked carefully

"Of course I'm sure" Kate replied offended

"It's just that people don't appear and then disappear Kate, maybe you imagined it you said yourself you were up late last night studying for the test today"

"Yeah maybe"

Kate sat there in silence thinking about the mysterious man, however the school bell echoed around the school signalling the end of home room. Kate and Jean both made their way down the hall and towards their first lesson which was English, however as they were walking Jean suddenly stopped.

"What's wrong"? Kate asked confused

"Look its Michael" Jean sighed

Kate rolled her eyes and looked towards where Michael was standing near a water fountain. Kate knew that Jean had a massive crush on Michael which made her turn weird whenever he was near.

"What do you see in him anyway"? Kate asked

"How can you ask that"? Jean said looking at her in shock

"What do you mean"?

"Look at him, he's good looking and smart, he has great muscles and he owns a bike" Jean said staring at him through the hall. Kate looked over at him again and tried seeing what Jean saw in him but it didn't work, suddenly though Michael turned and looked straight at her Kate quickly turned away hoping he hadn't caught her looking at him. Kate quickly dragged Jean away from staring and together they both headed to their next class.

The day went slowly for Kate after sitting through an hour of English and an hour of biology; Kate was relieved to hear the lunch bell. After a nice lunch with Jean they then proceeded to mythology class for their exam, when they arrived they found the rest of their class lined up outside which is what they had to do for every lesson thanks to their crazy teacher Mr. Howard who was obsessed with everything supernatural.

"So remember everyone party at my house tomorrow night"! Said a voice from the front of the line

Kate recognised her as Missy Wells probably the most popular girl in school and also the head cheerleader. Kate and Missy used to be best friends in elementary school but Missy found popularity in fifth grade and that ended the close friendship them two had.

"Kate"! Missy shouted spotting her

"Hi Missy" Kate said not as enthusiastic

"You're coming to my party right"?

"Erm I'm not sure Missy"

"Oh come on, you need at least one night out you can even bring your friend" Missy said looking at Jean

"Gee thanks" Jean said darkly

Kate knew that Jean and Missy didn't like each other, mostly because Missy was popular and that meant she took the piss out of all the unpopular people.

"Come on Missy why are you talking to these losers" Said a male voice

Missy's boyfriend Brad Garner came up behind and wrapped his arms around her. Brad was the most popular boy in school, he was tall, strong, handsome and also happened to be the captain and star quarterback of the school football team the Greenwood Bears.

"That's funny Brad, tell me do you think it's ironic that you play football yet your brain is the size of a baseball"? Jean said smiling

Kate started laughing however that meant Brad stared at her, he started to move towards them but was held back by Missy telling him to leave them. However Brad pushed Missy off him and pushed both Kate and Jean against the wall of the corridor.

"You think your funny Poole, your nothing but a dork that nobody likes" Brad snarled

"That's better than being an asshole like you, now get off me" Jean snapped

Brad didn't let go his grip only got tighter, Kate tried to not to show the pain but Brad was strong. However Brad was pulled off of the two girls and landed on the floor, Kate looked up to see Michael standing there.

"Dunham your dead"! Brad growled getting to his feet

Brad swung a punch at Michael, but he easily caught it and punched Brad in the stomach hard causing Brad to collapse to his knees and start coughing. Michael then grabbed him by his jacket and lifted him back to his feet; Michael had a look of fury on his face however that look disappeared when a bright flash of light blasted him in the face.

"Cool I can see it now Jock stopped by quiet loner" a voice said

Michael rubbed his eyes and saw that the person standing in front of him was Lesley Sharp; she was editor of the school newspaper and one of the most annoying people in school. Michael looked coldly at her holding her camera, however before he could say anything the door to the classroom opened and Mr. Howard came out.

"Okay you can all come in"
