"Heather, get your ass up right now!" I hear Kenzie shout from the hallway, followed by a series of gun shots and screaming.
I hop out of bed, still half asleep, and peak my head out the door. Three zombies lay dead on the floor, followed by two more live ones limping towards Riley.
My reflexes kick in, and I rush, push Riley down to the ground, covering her with my body.
"SHOOT!" I shout, as two more gunshots go off.
"What the hell happened?!" I get off of Riley, and examine the situation.
"These two idiots decided they wanted to let the damn zombies in!" Kenzie shouts, pointing at Meredith and Alex.
"I thought I heard someone outside, I'm really sorry." Meredith looks down at the ground, trying to avoid eye contact with me.
"Yeah, it's not our fault." Alex retaliates, crossing his arms. This boys got some balls.
"If it isn't your fault, why did RILEY ALMOST DIE?" Kenzie screams back.
"Kenzie, take a deep breathe, let's settle this calmly." She rolls her eyes at me, and continues to stare down Meredith and Alex.
"Alright, now tell me. What happened?" I say as calmly as I can. But it's pretty hard to be calm when your sister is almost killed.
"Ok, I thought I heard a screaming from outside, so Alex and I went downstairs and opened the back door. We didn't see anyone, but about five zombies came up to the door and almost killed us. We barricaded the door again, but they got through and yeah." Meredith replies.
"So they were being dumb asses, basically!" Kenzie screams.
"Chill Kenzie, it's ok, no one is hurt-"
"Not yet! But these idiots are going to get us killed! Remember yesterday?! Aaron?! That wouldn't of happened if they stopped to help Morgan up! Instead they ran like the devil!"
"Stop fighting, please." Riley says quietly, as I see tears starting to form in her eyes.
"Stop yelling" I mouth to Kenzie. I get down on my knee and look at Riley.
"Look, Riley, it's ok. We're just trying to protect you. Everyone's safe, so no damage has been done, right?" I say sweetly, like I used to when she was sick or in pain. She nods, but the tears don't disperse.
"We're going to deal with this matter later. Let's go fix the back door, and we'll calmly discuss the matter at hand. You two are coming down with me." I point to Alex and Meredith. I see Alex begin to argue, but he keeps his mouth shut.
"Elizabeth, try to calm Kenzie down. She'll listen to you." I whisper to Elizabeth. Kenzie and her sit down at the kitchen table and I head down to the first floor with Alex and Meredith.
"Alright guys, listen." I say once we get down the stairs.
"What?" Meredith asks, snarky.
"Don't cross me. You've already gotten one of my friends killed." I put my finger up to stop them from denying.
"But don't get Kenzie mad, alright? I know her. And I'm sure if it came down to it, she wouldn't be afraid to shoot you both." They look at each other, Alex raises his eyebrow, then they both look back at me.
"It wasn't our fault-" Meredith begins.
"It doesn't matter who's fault it is. This world has changed, rules have changed. Whoever is right or wrong, I don't know. But all I know is we've got five dead people up there that we need to clear out and probably two more on the way if you two can't keep under the radar. Do I make myself clear?" They both nod.
"Good, now let's fix the door." I turn and we head down the hall to the back door. We get the furniture and debris back into place and head back upstairs.
Tension in the group is certainly higher than I'd hope.
But what did I expect in an apocalypse?
As soon as I head back into my room, Elizabeth comes in.
"How's Kenzie?" I ask her, seeing her expression, knowing it oh so well.
"Not good. She's lost it. I've seen Kenzie mad, but never like this before." She sighs,
"We're all a bit stressed at the moment. Just, keep talking to her." I say, being a leader.
"Ok." She sighs.
"Where are Max, Brooks, Brad, and Mackenzie?" I ask, now realizing they weren't there when Kenzie shot the zombies.
"The roof." She responds. "They went up there before the zombies came into the theater." I nod and she leaves my room.
I lay down on my bed and daydream. Mackenzie, Riley and I in the park, playing tag, going to school, taking tests. I never thought I would miss taking tests, studying, homework. But brain eating zombies are a lot more stressful than 7x35 and the Civil War.
I wish life could be normal again.
This one is shorter than the others, but I hoped I expressed the emotional tensions that are raising.
