I let my eyes flutter open at the sound of my mothers voice in the living room.
"Rosalie! Hurry up! You're going to be late!" I knew she was talking about this dumb school trip we're going on today. They're taking us to some island or something by boat for biology. Something about studying plants I think. Sighing, I flop out of bed and drag myself over to my wardrobe and rifle through it to find something descent to wear. After a few tough moments of deciding, I was finally dressed in a pair of black skinny jeans, a black strapless top and a little black cardigan. I walked across my room, subconsciously irritated with the clinical white walls, and narrowly missed my suitcase for the next week. I opened my makeup bag and applied my foundation, too dark despite being the palest one I could find, my skin was paper white but I didn't mind. Next, it was black eyeshadow and eyeliner around my light grey eyes and light pink lipstick. I shoved my makeup bag and a small compact mirror into my suitcase. I grabbed my brush and raked it through my hair, smiling. I just recently managed to convince my mum to let me die it light pink. It was naturally curly and after years of growing it out, it reached my hips.
After stashing my brush in my suitcase, I took it downstairs with me, dropping it off in the living room on my way to the kitchen for breakfast.
"Mornin'" Mum said as she place a plate down I front of me with a roll stuffed with bacon on it. I love my mum. Just as I started eating, my phone beeped from the living room. I ran in, holding my roll in my mouth to check it.
Heeeeyyyy! Excited 4
The island trip yet? :D
It was from my insane best friend. She isn't coming on the trip. Her name's Anna by the way.
Not really...
Whyyyy? :(
Dunno XD
Of course I did know. I was about to spend a week in a tent listening to animals and studying some weird plants I'll never see again. I shoved my mobile into my pocket and walked back into the kitchen, the roll still hanging from my mouth.
"I hope you don't plan on walking around with food hanging out your mouth on the island in front of everyone." I rolled my eyes, mum was always saying things like that.
"have you put any thought into what you want to do for your fifteenth?" she was talking about my birthday. It isn't for another month but I swear she's more excited than me about it. I shook my head and she went back to cooking her own breakfast.
"where's dad?" I asked every morning, already knowing the answer but too used to asking that I couldn't stop.
"at work." After breakfast, I dashed to the bathroom, slightly angry at myself for putting makeup on before I washed my face. Oh, well, I can always wash it when I get to the island. They'd have plumbing there, right? I washed my hands, it may sound strange but I have my nails filed to a point and they're usually painted but today they're clean. So I have something to do on the boat. I brushed my teeth then went to the living room and put on my ballet pumps. I love these shoes. They're black with a silver 3d roseOno the front. They'd been plain when I bought them and I added a cheap broach to each. The front is a little scuffed from wear but I can't stop wearing them.
"ready?" Mum was standing in front of me. I nodded and stood up then followed heroutside, shivering slightly at the cold until we got into the car. The ride to school was silent, I could tell mum was nervous. See, I've never been away from home before, I've never even stayed over at a friends house overnight, Anna's always stayed over at mine. I'll admit it's nerve racking and I'd love to say I'm excited but honestly I'd rather not go where there isn't any internet or texting. We finally arrived at my school, a delightfully dull grey building. Honestly, it genuinely looks like a prison.
Before I could escape, mum pulled me into a hug and kissed my forehead.
"Be careful, sweetie. Don't forget anything." Tears were forming in her eyes so I escaped while I could, grabbing my suitcase from the back seat and strutted towards my biology teacher who was waiting at the school gate with his list of names.
"Sir, do we wait here or...?" He suddenly noticed me, jerking his head up to look at me with his dark green eyes, obstructed with poorly cleaned glasses, his wild grey hair followed his head movements.
"Ah! Rose, dear! Yes." I nodded and took my place beside him, peeking at his list of things we had to get done.
8:30-9:00 Register all students.
9:00-9:30 Seat students on bus.
9:30-12:00 Bus ride to port.
12:15- 19:30 Boat ride to island
19:30-midnight set up camp, have dinner, bed.
A two and a half hour bus ride followed by a seven and a quarter hour boat ride? Oh, fabulous. Nail painting wasn't going to be enough. Thank goodness for books. Usually I'd have found someone to talk to but I'm in a class with a bunch of the most annoying people I have ever had the displeasure to be in the company of. I'm not even joking.
9:15
OK, I admit it, this isn't going to be a terrible bus ride. I was at the very end of the line to get on the bus and the biology teacher (I never could remember his name...) had us fill the bus from the front and the way things wound up, I'm not the only one at the very back seat with the five seats at the back all to myself! I was even allowed to bring my suitcase onto the bus! I grabbed My I-pod out of my suitcase and put it on the ground between two of my seats and the two infront of me then sat across three of the seats, leaning against the window, and tapped on the first song there then closed my eyes.
10:38
I always thought the worst way to wake up (from too many experiences) was when your mum shouted on you, you get a fright and flop out of the bed onto the ground. Today I discovered a worse way. Waking up to screamo music playing full blast on your I-pod, screaming then being laughed at by the entire bus. Delightful experience. Really. Perhaps I'll just stay awake the rest of the ride...
I leaned down and grabbed a book from my suitcase. The worst choice ever, my favourite book ever, Lord of the Flies. It's about a bunch of school boys who all get trapped on an island and have to try and survive. Not the best choice for this journey! Oh, well. I-pod on full blast, My favourite book and trying not to fall asleep really passes the time...
12:00
I actually got a fright when the bus stopped until I checked the time on my I-pod then I waited until the people in front of me were half way down the bus before I got up and by the time I got out, almost everyone had their bags and a few were making their way to the biology teacher. Port my butt! It was a cliff with stairs carved into it! A big white boat was waiting at the bottom. Two men from the boat got off and came up the stairs, took two peoples bags, put them on the boat then helped the owners of the bags down the stairs and onto the boat then used this system until it got to me. One took my bag and the other tried to help me down the stairs by holding by elbow, moving too fast for my liking. Once again, luck was on my side and I got a seat inside on my own with a spare chair next to me. My bag sat in front of me so I grabbed my nail polishes and shoved it in front of the other chair so I had more legroom. I dug in my nail polish bag and found a piece of black lace, my silver nail polish and my black nail polish. I painted my nails silver, taking more time than was necessary, gave them extra time to dry then lay lace on a nail and painted black over the top and moved onto the next nail. Then once again, I gave them extra time to dry properly them dug in my bag again for top coat which I applied two coats of.
1:00
Well, thats one hour killed, just with nails. I admired them for a moment. they were black and it looked like silver lace over the top. They really do look good but I still have another six and a half hours, I wonder If my toenails need painting? I checked. Yes! They're clean! I grabbed my black and silver nailpolishes again before deciding what to do. I painted them black then used a toothpick to draw little patterns on them in silver, nothing in particular, more or less just random curls. I used top coat on them too and I must say, they do look fabulous. Well, that took up all of 45 minutes...
1:45
I am losing my mind. My I-pod isn't enough and I finished Lord of the Flies on the bus and it's too soon to re-read it. I looked around my suitcase for another book but none seemed interesting enough at the time. There's no internet or reception on my phone. What a time to have no movies on your I-pod. I looked around the boat to see what everyone else was doing. The majority were asleep, a boy in the back left of the bus was doing homework, the girl next to him was chatting away to him, a couple at the front were exchanging spit, the biology teacher was asking questions to the man driving the boat, a shy girl was sitting alone in the row behind me looking out the window in an effort to appear less lonely.
"Hi." I tried to get her attention. She turned her big blue eyes to me and flicked her frizzy red hair and appeared surprised.
"Oh, hello." she was awfully timid.
"You sitting alone?" She nodded "Aren't you lonely?" She shrugged. I stood up and sat down beside her, unable to keep the infectious grin she had off my face.
"What's your name?" She asked.
"Rosalie, what's your's?"
"Paige." She said "Not that I mind, but why are you talking to me?"
"Dunno, really, want me to leave?" Her face took on a desparate look.
"No! Well, not unless you want to leave but I'd rather-" I cut her off.
"Calm down, I'll stay!" She smiled again
4:00
We'd spent a while talking, getting to know each other then she let me do her nails in a french manicure, I'd filed them and everything to it took a good while then she'd fallen asleep.
I looked at her, her skin was pale, not quite as pale as mine, and she had freckles across her nose and a few over her forehead. They were scattered in such a random pattern made me think of paint splatters. She wasn't wearing any makeup except some lipgloss. She was wearing baggy boyfriend jeans with a pair of dirty white trainers and a blue tank top and a beige cardigan plus a thin gold chain around her neck half hidden by her jacket. I went back to my original seat and put my feet on the spare seat beside me and closed my eyes, reclining against the window.
19:25
A hand was on my shoulder shaking me. I groaned, it was supposed to tell them to go away or have their head chewed off.
"Rosalie! We're getting off now!" I dragged my lids apart and there stood Paige. I smiled at her and got up
"Did I honestly sleep all that time?" I asked as we walked towards the front of the boat where a makeshift bridge led to a beach with white sand. There were no footprints on the sand.
"Yup, you snored your way through the entire journey!" I knew the snoring thing was a joke, well, I hope it was a joke anyway.
"Come on, guys, lets hurry and get set up!" The biology teacher was currently struggling with a huge cooler while the guys from the boat already had taken one each and were getting their second ones. Once we were all on the beach, the teacher and the guys from the boat brought out thirty big bags that I recognized as the tents. Once they had gotten everything off the boat, the guys went back on and left the beach.
"Alright, now, we're going to get into partners, grab a tent and set it up then we'll have some dinner and spare time then bed. There are a few rules, No going into the forest at night, if you go during the day like we will be tomorrow, always make a clear trail, if you need to use the bathroom, go slightly into the forest and dig a hole. Oh! and absolutely no drinking the sea water! Now, Paige, I understand you brought your own tent and things, yes?" I turned to the girl next to me as she nodded.
"Wanna be partners? My tent's pretty big and my mum went overboard on accessories." Only now did I notice that she had a huge bag as well as the largest suitcase I'd ever seen. I nodded. Not like I'd want to spend any time with any other people. I helped het pitch the tent, amazed by the size of it. It was one of those ones with a big center room and two little mum had put in a portable table, two fold out chairs and two single inflatable beds that took us ages to blow up using the little foot pumps but it was amusing none the less. She'd handed me a pillow and a blanket then we put our cases in our little 'rooms' and went out of the tent, ignoring the appreciative stares and jealous murmurs when they compared our extravagant tent to their little poorly pitched tents that didn't even reach my head. We walked over to where the teacher was standing making a fire.
Once he got it lit, we sat around it as he started talking.
"Now, Food is in the four coolers with the red lids and drinks are in the four coolers with the blue lids. Please only take what you need. Now, also, I'm handing out little kits to help you study plants. There should be a knife, a spatula, a magnifying glass, notebook, a pencil, a rubber, a sharpener and a beaker. Please check them, I have spares. We were given one between two, me and Paige were sharing one so she checked and let me know everything was there. After everyone got what they needed, we were free to eat and as we did, The teacher started talking again.
"Tomorrow, we won't do much other than allowing you to familiarise yourself with your surroundings so get a good night's sleep, don't do anything stupid tonight." A few people giggled, obviously making plans they'd never actually go through with. Me and Paige ended up taking a bottle of water and a piece of fruit each and going to eat in the tent. We sat facing each other, sitting at the table on the fold out chairs. She finished before me and started digging through one of her huge bags again.
"What're you looking for?" She said nothing, just held up two small contraptions.
"Just remembered! You hang it in your little part of the tent and pull this string and it lights up." I took one. It was a bulb attatched to a white cylinder with a hook attatched and a piece of string hung from the white cylinder. I hung it on a conveniently placed pole in my little room thing. We sat in pleasant silence until she piped up.
"I think I'm gunna go to bed now." I sighed and stood up.
"Yeah, me too." I took the two steps required to get to my room then zipped up the wall of fabric that separated it from the main part. I dropped to my knees at my suitcase and unzipped it, revealing stacks of clothes that I'd never need. I found a pair of thick black jogging bottoms and a pink strap top then my makeup wipes. I changed and cleaned my face, checking I'd removed it all in my little compact mirror. I pulled an extra blanket from my bag, a big fluffy white one then snuggled into my bed. I toyed with the idea of turning on the light and reading but decided I couldn't be bothered. I checked the time, only half past nine but I felt so tired. I supposed I must just be exhausted from all that other sleeping I did. I fell asleep quickly.
Dream
I was running through the forest, only it wasn't me, it was a wild girl, black skinny jeans caked with blood and dirt up to the knees, she wore a black bra and little else, pink hair had grown to past her butt, showing her natural white blond hair, a black spear was clutched firmly in one hand, blood from a previous kill ran down it to her dirty pale skin. Her feet were bare, flying across the grass and mud like concrete, black paint adorned her face like tear tracks and an intricate pattern of cuts and bruises decorated her stomach, chest and arms. A knife hung from a piece of string tied around her hips. She pounced, a distressed growl pierces the air as her spear does the same to a mountain lion. It's claws leave four long red lines across her back as it dies. She pulls her spear out. Then nothing.
"Rosalie! Wake up! Are you alright?!" Paige is franctically trying to wake me, I gasped and sat up, aware of wetness on my cheeks. Tears? "Are you alright?" I nod. "You were crying out in your sleep."
"Sorry for waking you, it was just a dream. Bad one."
"Are you alright?" She repeats her question.
"Yeah, I'm fine. You can go back to bed. I'm fine." She looks at my face for a minute then went back to her bed, zipping the door behind her. I zipped mines after wards. I closed my eyes again once I lay down and fell into a blissfully dreamless sleep.
