In the Eleventh Grade, my English professor asked me to write about the theme of Transcendentalism. I did so in poem form - and got an A on the assignment even though it was a bit of a... non-traditional way to write about it.

Man Ascending
I long to be in the woods again
Amongst the trees
To hear the raging river roar
To feel the breeze
To walk with things much greater than
Higher than me –
Deep in the forest's hiding shade
I long to be.
I dream of walking sandy shores
Of oceans deep
Where little, independent worlds
The tidepools keep
Where sea-song sings, where waters glow
Under moonbeams –
I wade into the shallows there
In pleasant dreams.
I dwell on dancing through the fields
On rainy days
To hear the Thunder echoing
Its godly praise
To see the lightning; feel the rain
So cool and clear
Upon my face – I dwell; I know
I belong here.
