Carcer X

Chapter 1: The Red Demon Bird

It was a rather peaceful morning at the gates of Sanctus Erina Academy, but amidst the pleasant scenery, a dark figure appeared. Sitting on top of the pyramid- shaped watch tower, is a red-haired girl. Her appearance is mostly normal, disregarding the fluttering crimson wings. Yes, she's pretty much ordinary.

"Kehehe, one of the famous strongholds that produces weapons that will one day slay our kind…", she said as her creepy laughter echoed in the air. "Fell prey to the hands of a demon such as I. How pitiful. No matter how strong a barrier is, it's no match to my power" she continued, breaking the thick layer of barrier that marks the end of the academy, like a fragile glass broken into shards. She stood up at the pointed peak where she has been sitting for quite a while, crossing the previously-sealed boundaries of the school, she flew up. "Now, shall I begin… with that old looking church?" she said facing the holy fortress that stood from the other side of the gates.

"200 years ago, our world, Aeternus Eterna, was caught up in a struggle between us humans, and demons…" the teacher discussed in front of her seemingly uninterested students, "..the war was then brought to an end by the three supreme rulers from the three great families, after that they created Carcer X to continue protecting the peace of the land.." she continued explaining, ignoring her students blank gaze and then finally… the noisy bell rang.

"Okay, we'll have a test next week, be prepared…" the teacher said before she proceeded to the door. The students were glad that the dreaded subject ended, but they were worried about the history test that their instructor just mentioned.

It was another free time. Since the teacher has left, the students still have a few minutes to chat before the next one arrive. They were chatting happily, except for a few introverts, ofcourse. At the back row of the room, at the seat next to the big window, a blue-haired student was taking quite a long nap, even during the history discussion. He then raised his head up, revealing a pair of red eyes that resembles that of a cat, and a rather pale skin. His left sideburns are slightly longer than the right, and he's wearing an odd cross-shaped earring in his right ear. He stared coldly at the noisy room, annoyed at their senseless chatter. His eyes narrowed, like he has realized something, "… an uninvited visitor.." he muttered to himself, as he placed his left hand under his chin, "… shall I call him?" he thought.

Just then, a girl with short bright orange hair and brown orbs entered the room, she's the class representative, Rain Sorghum. "Minna! Oswald-sensei is calling downstairs, we have a practical exam in magic class!" she announced, suddenly, the room quieted down and then followed by loud cheering and lively screams.

"Yay!"

"I'm getting kinda' bored with studies, a practical exam is a breath of fresh air haha"

The students chattered, they were glad that they won't be spending the next few hours in this hell-like place, more known as the classroom. Well, not all of them were glad, the blue-haired boy was kinda' depressed, seems like he wasn't fond of magic class at all. He sat on his chair, staring at his classmates who were getting out of the classroom excitedly, he remained silent with his emotionless face.

"Zephyrine Darkarcher-san! I said we have a practical exam!" Rain said hoping to get the blue-haired boy to leave the classroom, she succeeded in getting his attention, but he just looked at her with his unreadable eyes. Somehow, she felt shivers run down her spine. That cold gaze isn't something she sees everyday.

"W-what the heck are you still dong here?, Oswald-sensei is calling us!"

Zephyrine stood up and started walking out of the classroom, leaving rain alone.

"What a jerk…" she said to herself, annoyed. Rain is known to have a strong personality, but that person is different.

Zephyrine's POV

An infiltrator just broke through the barriers, I wonder why the teachers haven't noticed yet?

(sighs..)

"Even so, these students sure are carefree," I thought as I look at my classmates who are happily walking on the hallways. I made sure to keep my distance from them, I don't really like crowd…

"Despite the fact that they know what the real situation is outside the academy walls… they're way too absorbed in this temporary peace. It was mentioned in our history "twice" that the war has ended, but in fact… the conflict between humans and demons continues up to this very day.."

"Okay, Class! Our activity for today is mainly about proper control of magic energy!"Kelly Oswald, the magic class instructor said. "You may call it a type of energy materialization because the concept is quite similar, you'll have to give form to your energy by using your mind. That's the very basics of using magic… although in our case for today, you won't be manipulating your magic at will, you just have to guide it in a single point and have it synchronize with your soul, thus, your energy will take form by itself… in other words, you'll be revealing your magic's true form".

"heh.. she won't know if we use normal energy materialization, would she?"

"Yeah, I don't see the point.."

"besides, that one sounds more complicated"

The students whispered, but unfortunately for them, the teacher just contradicted what they're planning…

"You can't cheat, because like I said, this weapon synchronizes with the soul, it's an extension of yourself.. it's alive… I will immediately know what a normal weapon is, from one with a soul"

"Eh?!"

"No fair!"

The students kept getting depressed. Like I thought, they're really worry-free. Well, it's not as if I care about this war too, so I guess we're slightly the same, but their case is different from mine. While I'm in the middle of my endless thoughts, Oswald-sensei began to show us a demonstration.

"This is my weapon", she said while materializing her 'soul weapon', as what it is actually called.

"..Spear of penitence!" she continued. I admit, it was impressive.

"A soul weapon is very unique, It's durability and strength is much more better than a normal one, it reflects a person's own power" she discussed.

"Hey! All of you! Try firing an ammunition spell at me!" Oswald-sensei suddenly declared, startling everyone except 'I'. Well everyone was reluctant at first but they did as told. Surprisingly, sensei didn't even move an inch, she just stood there motionless, with her spear/ soul weapon hovering beside her. To everyone's surprise, the spear moved on it's own and blocked each attack accurately. Everyone was impressed.

"You see, a soul weapon has a will of it's own… to protect it's master", she said while dismissing her undamaged weapon. "That's one difference… a distinct one, actually..".

My classmates, as usual, got all worked up and started materializing their own. That nosy class representative was the first one to do it right. the teacher said it was too quick, mastering that technique usually require a week or two, she doesn't expect that someone will be able to do it, she was originally planning to move the actual exam next week.

A lot of students began accomplishing the task impressively, but as for me, I'm having quite a bit of a problem. The moment I tried to guide it to a single point, it explodes in my face…

"It can't be helped…" I muttered.

Suddenly, a group of noisy girls approached me, I don't know whether they're insulting me or not…

"Zephyrine-kun", one girl shouted

"What kind of weapon did you get?"

"I bet it's amazing since it's you~~"

EXPLODES!

I bet that would answer their questions, but they kept blabbering…

"if you want I-I'll tutor you…" the girl with the glasses said while fidgeting.

"E-eh! No fair, I'll tutor him too!" the girl with two pony tails argued

"Then, in that case, I'll teach him too!" another joined them and they fought all the way, it's annoying so I moved aside to get away from them. What're they fighting over? Not like I care, I don't really get what their being noisy about is for…

Then a certain weed-headed guy came. Yeah, I think he's from the Reignsphere family, the third most powerful aristocratic household that governs Aeternus Eterna, don't know his name though, I couldn't care less. Like I mentioned, he has green hair and eyes.

"How pathetic" he boasted, "you couldn't even do such a simple thing.." he continued.

"You are Rick Reighnsphere, right?" one girl said looking at the weed who just spoke.

"How could you say such a thing to Zephyrine-kun!? I'm sure he'll do good if he practice!"

Seriously, I don't know why they're so troubled with something trivial. I was about to leave but the weed just said a taboo…

"Hey shortie!" he called "how about a duel? If these girls are so confident with your skills, why don't you show us then?" … That idiot, he doesn't know who he's up against, calling me by that cursed name, my height is average!

"Fine" I said as I glared at him. I'm quite sure I saw him make a pathetic expression, that's good, I'll make him even more scared in that duel. There're plenty of other ways to fight other that magic.

"T-then it's settled! Tonight at the graveyard practice field!" … Heh, he chose a wrong place, the darkness is mine. Well, the students began setting their debts, is that even allowed? Probably it is.

"100 colon on Rick!"

"90 on Zephyrine!"

(Colon- Aeternus Eterna's currency. 1 colon= 1 dollar)

After Classes, I waited at the bridge at the front of our school, there's a huge pool that goes around this massive academy that forms a pattern, where the "Water-spirit" resides. It's way past six and all the students have gone back to the residential area. I, on the other hand am waiting, not for that coward-weed, but my servant. It seems that the duel would be postponed. That demon who infiltrated our school has made it's first move, I'm sure the teachers will finally be aware. I decided to do the energy materialization again and take a look at my soul weapon. Ofcourse, I can do it…. Easily, wondering why?

As I gaze at my hand that releases a wonderful shade of black magic interlaced with white, my eyes narrowed. Yes, the astonishing truth is I'm a half demon and human, my energy is a mixture of black and white. It is impossible to separate these two forces, that's why whenever I try to release a pure white, it'll ruin the balance and cause an explosion. Because of the complexities of living in this world, I have to hide it.

I don't care about both human and demons, but I like the dark.

NORMAL POV

Kelly Oswald- a magic class instructor- raced towards the school infirmary.

"Impossible!" she muttered. She barged inside the room to find two heavily- wounded guards, both have their "eyes" taken, their heads are wrapped in bandages to cover it. Bloody.

"W-what happened?!" she questioned the other three teachers in the room.

"We checked these guard's memory… they were on patrol when they heard a noise at the old church… after that, their memory... blacked out..." A middle- aged male professor, wearing glasses, stated.

"Harvey-sensei... you mean an infiltrator has snuck into our defence and we don't even know who it is?!", Kelly Oswald exclaimed

"That isn't entirely true… we investigated the scene and we found this… "Another teacher said, as she hand a document over to Kelly-sensei. In it was a picture of the scene and a red feather. As soon as her eyes landed on it, she gasped… "T-the culprit… Almira-sensei, could it be..?!"

"Yes, it is the barrier breaker… The Red Demon Bird!", Almira said with a serious voice. The three of them had dim expressions.

"We will be having a meeting regarding this, but the most crucial part is the student's safety… As of now we've released an official order to not let any student out of the residential area..."

Meanwhile… back at the bridge…

"You seem to be enjoying yourself, Master" a person spoke, breaking the heavy silence.

"You're late", a blue-haired boy with cat- like red eyes responded without turning around. He was too focused with the strange looking chains that float around him.

Soul weapon.

His materialized energy took the form of chains, endless chains, that comes out of small black holes that rips the atmosphere, tearing it apart, creating a distortion in the layer of reality.

"What a strange weapon" The guy spoke again, "it's oozing out of dark energy…" he continued

"Doesn't it look nice? I can manipulate it's size, movement and length" the boy replied

"I say it's bizarre and creepy" the guy added

"I like it that way"

"Anyway, what did you call me for, Master?"

The boy turned around, his cold eyes landed upon the person in front of him, a young man around 17, he has shoulder-length brown hair and mandarin eyes. He has a soft expression on his face compared to his master. He is wearing a blue and white coat with black linings and metal bangles on both arms, embedded in the upper part of the sleeves, he also wore blue pants, the same shade as that of the top.

"You, should already know, Lawrence… it's a little bit of entertainment" Zephyrine responded as he throw an authoritative look which just made the young man smirk.

"As expected of the heir of the most powerful aristocratic family, you never fail my expectations, master".
