Carcer X
Chapter 2: Black and White
Sanctus Erina Academy- an institution solely built to train its students to become Occisor Daemonums, as such, it's facilities and equipments encompasses a large variety of training necessities, which includes practice fields, weaponry chambers, and others. The academy's size is roughly 200 kilometres in diameter, large enough to be called a city. There're a total of 10 practice grounds in the school that allows students to train in different kinds of environment.
Ground 1- Graveyard- 7:00 pm-
"W-we did it Mari! Too bad Rina- chan got left behind" A girl with light brown hair with a bow tied in the lower part said as she sat on one of the graves.
"… it was risky, but we manage to get away from the guards…" Mari, the girl with ashen- coloured hair, wearing glasses replied
"… now we can watch Zephyrine- kun's match, It's already time, where're they?!"
"… Don't be hasty, Mia, we just came here to check if the match is not postponed…" Mari warned
"… mou, stop ruining my mood, Mari… "Mia pouted, "Anyway, this place is reeealllyy scary~~"
"Come on, these are just set ups... they're fake graves..." Mari answered
"But they surely create a tense atmosphere… "
The two girls argued. They're one of Zephyrine's fan girls… errr... classmates.
"… We're gonna be dead if we're caught…" Mia said.
Just then, a pair of brow eyes flashed behind her, she was startled and fell off the grave she was sitting on.
"I-INCHO!?" she screamed as she looked up at the figure that appeared behind her, a girl with short orange hair. (Incho means class representative)
Rain glared at the two girls who looked as if they've seen a ghost…
"What the hell are you doing here?!" Mia questioned.
"That's my line! You idiot!" Rain said, with a grim expression "I was about to go to bed and I saw you two from my window, what're you thinking? There's an intruder so everyone wasn't allowed to leave the residential area!"
"… But Incho followed as well" Mia said comically
"Wha..! O-ofcourse, I followed you because it's my duty as the class representative… if anything were to happen to you two…"
"We got it, we got it, Calm down Incho"
"Anyway we should return already…"
"But Zephyrine- kun…" Mari muttered
"Hnn, that jerk eh? Well, when I checked the log in the Residential area, I'm pretty sure I didn't see his name…" Rain said with her hand placed on her chin "Well, jerks don't die that easily, so just forget it…"
"E-HH!? You just said that it's your duty!"
"Fine, fine… Jeez I don't get why you like him that much.." Rain replied "Sure, he's got good looks, but he's a dufus in magic and he's too short..." she teased.
Unknown to them are two wary eyes filled with hunger, hiding beneath the shadows of the withered trees that decorated the graveyard ground. The Red Demon Bird.
"… Three girls eh… Their "eyes" look delicious" she whispered to herself.
"… She was very scary! She went pass me and then she headed to that church!" A girl with light green hair explained childishly as her blue fish tail wagged in the water. She's a Mermaid, the water spirit that resides in the school's river-like pool.
"… Arigatou, Aria, you were a great help" Zephyrine replied as she pat Aria's head gently. Behind him was his servant/ butler, Lawrence. The two of them proceeded to the church.
"All Demons have aliases/ titles according to their appearance or abilities, but only those who are strong or those who causes troubles are well known, though" Lawrence explained as he slowly open the door of the run- down church.
"I know that already! Just tell me about the Red Demon Bird" Zephyrine replied
"Master, you're too impatient..." Lawrence sighed "… very well, the day before yesterday, the Red Demon Bird started attacking humans and a lot of people lost their eyes… she feeds on them, apparently… It's a good thing you noticed that she's here"
"It's pretty obvious, I don't know why the teacher didn't sense her presence"
"Haha, that's because they have other things to do, unlike master who just sleeps in class" Lawrence teased, "Just kidding, anyway, the Red Demon Bird used to live normally in the town and the people said she was really kind and hardworking… they didn't expect her to go berserk and harm them. She works at a bakeshop. According to the reports, at 8:18pm, she began acting weird and annihilated the workers at the bakeshop… We still don't know her motives but… hn? Is something wrong?" Lawrence was cut off when Zephyrine suddenly stopped walking.
They were on the isle, right in front of the altar.
"That's not what I meant, Lawrence…" Zephyrine muttered as he gazed at the bloodstained carpet.
"I'm talking about her abilities…" he added, making Lawrence wonder what his master is thinking.
"Uhh.. she's a low level demon, specializes in wind magic and her "unique" ability is breaking barriers made of white magic…"
"There's too much blood… those guards probably won't last long" Zephyrine thought.
"I see, she's a weak one." He said loud enough for Lawrence to hear, "Buy really, why would a weak demon infiltrate a school of weapons? It's suicidal… unless…" He added. Lawrence was a bit surprised with the term "weapons" that his master used.
"… She's the bait" Zephyrine concluded."
"Kyaa!" A loud scream lingered from the grave yard practice field. Rain was fighting the infiltrator with all her best, but she was just thrown back and crashed to one of the graves.
"I-Incho!"
"N-not yet" she muttered, she stood up and materialized her soul weapon. A huge scythe with claw- like design that decorates the upper and lower part. She gathered all her remaining strength and launch a direct attack on the demon, unfortunately the demon just grabbed her scythe and pulled her closer.
"Kehehe, give up, you're no match for me" she whispered
"SHUT UP!" rain shouted pulling her weapon away and charged back to gain some distance.
"I hate this… why can't I fight her properly… I always…do it right during the tests... why.." she thought to herself, giving the demon the chance to attack. She was thrown aback again and her frail body slammed into the tree, and she lost consciousness. Mari and Mia rushed to her aid, and tried to heal her injuries.
"W-we're sorry, incho! This is… all our fault" Mia cried.
The Red Demon Bird walked closer to them, "kehehe that's right, cry even more, scream for help…" she mocked "That desperate expression… I love it!"
Mari stood up and held her breathe, apart from incho, she's the only attack type remaining. Mia is a healer so she couldn't do much. It's up to her now. But even before she could start attacking, The demon already got behind her.
"I said… CRY!" she shouted as her hand reach for Mari's eyes.
"WHA!" she was halted by an ammunition spell fired from her back, Incho managed to wake up and did so. The demon fell to the ground and the three of them wore surprised expressions.
"Y-You did it!" Mia cheered with tears in her eyes
"I thought I was done for…" Mari muttered, that scared the wits out of her.
"Strange…" Incho said while panting, that battle almost drained her energy "Don't you think it's too quick?" she added
"Nonsense, you were so good!" Mia said, she has completely regained her cheerfulness "…You can already be an Occisor Daemonum!"
"EH? Yo-you thinks so?" Rain responded, she was flustered by the praise.
"You seem to be forgetting something, we should already get out of here…" Mari was cut off by a bunch of pointed rocks aiming towards them. She quickly made a barrier to block the attacks.
"Kehahaaa!" They heard a creepy laughter and their eyes quickly averted to the source, the demon, still lying on the ground, was laughing. She slowly stood up and faced the three with excitement.
"No way! You're still alive!" Mia shouted
"AHAHAAHAA!.. You got to be kidding… You think you can be an Occisor Daemonum?" The demon said while using her wind magic to manipulate some pointy rocks "… you couldn't even defeat a demon of my level!"
"What do you mean…" Incho muttered "Just.. What are you?!" she exclaimed
The demon charged at them, her long finger nails cracked the barrier that Mari summoned.
"I'm The Red Demon Bird!" she said as the barrier broke into pieces. The demon then aimed at Mari but Rain pushed her aside.
Blood rolled down her left cheek… She tilted her head up a bit, revealing her uninjured face…
"I-It wasn't mine… "She said, she pointed towards the red demon bird who got thrown back meters away from them, her right hand was wounded.
"Are you alright, ojou- san?" A guy with brown hair asked as he glanced back at Rain. He blocked the attack from the Red Demon Bird.
"E-EHHH?!" Rain gasped "Y-You're L-LAWRENCE ALDEN HIRST?! Wh-why!?" she was confused. Lawrence merely smiled. "… Because of Master, ofcourse…" he replied weakly.
"Three puny students and an Occisor Daemonum… Seems like I got to be serious…" The demon said as a pair of red wings grew behind her.
"I'll make you pay for my right hand, Occisor Daemonum- san!" she shouted as she charge at Lawrence.
"… As you wish, ojou-san" He replied as he move his katana.
"I- Incho! Are you alright?" Mia rushed towards rain
"I'm fine, this blood's not mine…" she smiled
"Anyway who is that hot guy?!" Mia suddenly asked
"Ah- He's Lawrence, a famous Occisor Daemonum, he's one of the strongest, I'm a big fan of him~" Rain explained.
"O-oi oi, are you forgetting the situation again?" Mari complained
"Hnn… the fight is boring" The three heard a voice from behind them. They turned around to see a pair of red eyes, watching the fight with a bored look.
"Z-Z-Z-ZEPHYRINE- KUN!" Mia exclaimed, steam bursting out of her head,
"Our P-prince!" Mari added, both her hands were at her tomato face.
"Eh? Even Mari?!" Rain squinted " … And you! What do you mean boring?!"
Zephyrine averted his gaze to Rain. "… you three should hurry and go back now…" he said
"who are you to tell me that!" Rain pointed out "… besides, as the class representative, it's my duty to…"
"Fine, just don't get in the way" He said, cutting off Rain's statement. He got passed her and walked towards the fight.
"Oh, there you are, hurry up and fight, or this demon will get tired already…" Lawrence said calmly as he jumped back. In a wink of an eye, he was already infront of his master. He tapped his shoulder and retreated.
"Where do you think you're going? Occisor Daemonum- san" The demon shouted as she stood straight up.
"sorry, I was merely waiting for him, you'll serve as a good training and entertainment for my master…" Lawrence smiled.
"KEH! It doesn't matter, I'll kill you all off anyway!" she said as she charged directly at Zephyrine. Their eyes met, she smiled creepily at the sight.
"What wonderful red eyes you got there! Boy, they look tasty!"
"I'll take that as a complement" he said stoically, he immediately put up a barrier to block the demon's attack.
"I-IDIOT! She's a barrier breaker! That won't work!" Rain panicked, she quickly materialized her soul weapon to help, but…
The moment the demon laid her nails on the magic barrier, she screamed in agony, electricity flowed through her and she was stunned.
"I-Impossible…" Rain muttered
The Red Demon Bird fell to her knees…
"Is that all you've got, lightning and barriers aren't even my specialty…" Zephyrine said while glaring at her, "well, you're a low level after all".
"Not yet, you brat!" she said as she forced herself up. Multiple wind bullets hovered around her. Zephyrine made lightning bullets, startling Rain. "H-how can he make so many ammunition bullets, in class he can't even make a single one, and why am I the only one noticing… ehhh?!" her thoughts were disrupted to see Mari and Mia lying on the ground. "They fainted?" she whispered.
The Red Demon Bird charged her attack and aimed them all at Zephyrine. He merely stood and watch the bullets come.
"G-GET AWAY!" Rain shouted, her eyes widen in shock when a bunch of chains suddenly appeared and blocked the bullets easily.
"Tch! I'm not done yet, the demon said as she created a huge wind hurricane, causing multiple grave, trees and etc to fly all around. Luckily, Lawrence was there to make a shield for the three girls. Zephyrine stood motionless, he narrowed his eyes then he lift up his arm.
"Kehahah! What'll you do now, boy?" The demon laughed as she hovered in the air, manipulating the hurricane. Just then, multiple black holes appeared around her, and large chains came out of it and bound her hands and wings, causing her to plummet down.
"The caster is defeated… now to deal with this hurricane…" Zephyrine muttered "I haven't tried this before, but… this is the best shot". He raised his arm, his palm facing the raging wind, he made sure that his feet are properly attached to the ground using earth magic.
"… Manipulating your energy in a spiral motion like this hurricane…" He thought as he concentrate "… will create an opening at it's center, and thus…
You'll be able to absorb the attack!" he said as a small black and white portal, the size of a tennis ball appeared in his palms and absorbed the hurricane.
-AFTERWARDS—
Lawrence and Rain rushed towards Zephyrine.
"Uhh… It worked?" He said looking at his hand, it was bleeding. A ticking sound was heard when a vein popped in Rain's forehead.
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT WORKED?! YOU COULD'VE DIED YOU IDIOT!" Rain shouted, making Lawrence laugh.
"I don't want to be called an idiot by an idiot" he replied bluntly
"WH!?" Rain was stuttered. She had a lot of things in mind, including Zephyrine's abilities.
Lawrence glanced down at the annoyed Rain. He wasn't worried that she had seen what happened.
"It takes an expert's eye to see or feel the dark magic that my master used, so there's nothing to worry about, it was properly concealed, the demon that infiltrated will also serve as a distraction so that his dark energy won't get noticed " he thought as he smiled softly.
Zephyrine walked towards the Red Demon Bird.
"Won't you try to escape, if the teachers arrive, they won't bother to send you to prison… with the trouble you've caused, you'll be dead on the spot…" he warned. He said it as if he was taunting her.
She clenched her hand, her long nails piercing her hands, causing it to bleed. "DAMN YOU HUMANS!" she shouted
"… Hey that's why I called Lawrence." Zephyrine added.
"I'll be taking you to a Carcer X fortress in this Area… It's a prison for demons who cause troubles… if you behave the way it should be, there'll be chances for you to be released" Lawrence explained.
She bowed her head down, the shadow of her hair covered her eyes.
"Tch! E-ELIZABETH!" The demon shouted
"Hn?" Zephyrine muttered
"That's my name you idiot! Tell me yours!" she jolted
"Zephyrine" he replied with his monotonous voice
"The tremor was from here!" A pink- haired instructor said as she rushed towards Ground 1, graveyard.
"There're students!" another one said "Were they hurt?!"
When they arrived at the scene, they were alarmed to see the Red Demon Bird.
"Grant- Sensei! Eurika- sensei!" Rain exclaimed at their arrival.
"Maa… Incho sure knows a lot of teachers…" Mia added while dusting her skirt.
"EH? You two are awake?"
"Just now"
"Students! Please stand back! It's dangerous!" Grant- sensei instructed as he was preparing to engage in battle along with Eurika- sensei.
"There's nothing to worry about anymore, the situation was neutralized, thanks to master" Lawrence explained to the two.
"Huh? You're Lawrence Alden Hirst, right? I'm a fan!" Grant- sensei said with a sparkle in his eye. "It's a good thing you're here, the student's could've been in danger, what a coincidence!"
"It's not a coincidence, Master called me here earlier, and I was late…"
"Master?" all of them wondered.
"That's right, he mentioned it earlier… who could it be, the school principal?" Rain thought
"Yup! My Master." Lawrence repeated as he shuffled Zephyrine's hair.
"Hey, don't ruin your master's hair…" he complained
"Hah? That kid?" Grant said
"No way, it's the jerk?" Rain Squinted and pointed at Zephyrine
"As expected of Zephyrine- kun, to have such a cool guy as his butler.." Mari added
The two of them sweat dropped at the exaggerated reaction.
"Uhmm, can you tell us what happened?" Eurika- sensei suddenly asked a more relevant question.
"That is…" Rain said but she was cut off by Zephyrine, again.
"These girls almost got their eyes eaten, luckily Lawrence came and save them." He said quickly
"Eh but I didn't.." Lawrence complained, but he was cut off as well
"Shut it."
Meanwhile… Somewhere inside the forest of Sanctus Erina Academy, A beautiful statue lies.
It depicts a girl, whose eyes had some weird markings.
In front of the statue, a hooded figure appeared.
"The bait was caught.." the figure whispered, the voice was obviously that of a woman.
"I'm sorry… It's not here" she said as she touch a strange tattoo on the upper left part of her neck, it was in the form of a spider web.
"You'll have to wait some more…" she uttered before she disappeared in the wind.
