Shall We Dance?

The Gap in the Curtain...

The sound of laughter echoed out into the night, loud and almost unnatural. It was the laughter of a woman, more specifically one that had, had a little too much to drink. Josh's eyebrows continued to travel closer and closer to each other, his frown deepening, as he stared at the silhouettes of the people inside the mansion. It was positively huge entirely brick, with more than ten balconies. The whole estate was surrounded by a very high barred black fence that enclosed massive gardens and three swimming pools. He could see the people clearly in between the gap of the curtains…they were having a party. "No surprise there," he muttered to the darkness.

His hands gripped the cold black bars of the high fence, his breath coming out long and shallow, condensing in the freezing air. He squinted, as he heard more high-pitched laughter escape from inside. Any minute now, he thought, any minute and he would see her. Any minute…he was reassuring himself, that he would see her, when he knew he had no logical reason to be looking for her.

He kept at his ritual of glaring at the window, and repeating 'any minute now.' The loud sounds of laughter and chatter, began to die away, and at the same time his heart began to beat frantically. "No," he whispered, "no not again." His mind filled with the memories of the failed attempts he had made to see her the nights before. Every day he did this, and he hadn't managed to see her yet, although he had heard her speak once…but today determination filled him. If he didn't see Kayla now, he would walk in and find her.

Just as he was beginning to wonder how he would get past the security guards and the 9 foot plus gate, his ears filled with the slow soft sound of music. It wasn't just any music either; it was Nocturne, aka his favourite melody…her favourite melody. And then he saw her…in the arms of another man…swaying together in time with the music. He saw the flash of her thick black hair, as he whirled her around. Her familiar lithe figure. She was wearing a very short pink dress, nothing like the sort of clothes she used to wear before…and what made Josh ache the most, was that she was laughing, and it was that same unearthly laugh he had heard before.

His jaw twitched, and his knuckles had turned pale white, with the force he was holding on to the bars of the fence. They were like the bars of a jail cell, except he wasn't sure who was in jail. Him, locked in his emotions and alone, or Kayla locked in another person's personality, and another persons arms.

A/N: Hey everyone :) I don't want to sound annoying, but this is my first story on Fictionpress, and I would very much appreciate it, if you helped a fellow author out and R/R. Thanks!
