Chapter three:
A fool there was and his goods he spent Oh the toil we lost and the spoil we lost
(Even as you and I!)
Honor and faith and a sure intent
But a fool must follow his natural bent
(And it wasn't the least what the lady meant),
(Even as you and I!)
And the excellent things we planned,
Belong to the woman who didn't know why
(And now we know she never knew why)
And did not understand.
The Vampire-Rudyard Kipling
The vampire in front of me was dressed in a t-shirt and shorts. His muscles bulging underneath the fabric. He looked as if he was eighteen or seventeen, but vampires are eternal. For all I know, he could be five centuries old.
He stood, a few inches taller than me and asked, "You don't know anything, yes?"
"No." I half lied. I did know something, just not a lot.
"You're lying." He chuckled softly and came closer, I took a step back.
"No. I'm not."
"Yes. You are. Tell me what you know." His voice was still friendly but there was a slight edge of menace now.
"Sure. Tell me why those two," gesturing at the two guards outside our room, "dragged me here with a word." And why the air around them taste like torture..
"You have no right to ask, human." The vampire replied smugly.
"Fine. Have it your way." I snapped back and crossed my arms, glaring at him.
In that moment his eyes harden and he moved, too fast for me to see. All of sudden, I found myself pinned onto the marble floor his crimson eyes boring into mine. His expression was still amused, but a cold smirk was glued to his white face. I want to smash his grinning teeth in.
"Now. When Gabe tells you to tell him something you do. If you don't, Gabe gets angry and Gabe is hungry right now. You don't want to that when Gabe is hungry. Understood?" His cold fingers crawled slowly up my chest until they reached my neck; he curled it around my neck I could feel my pulse beating frantically under the pressure. He squeezed and I gasped.
"Understood?" He asked again.
Unable to stop I nodded frantically, he let go of my neck but then merely reposition himself so that he was somehow just leaning beside me. It was freaky enough that he referred to himself in third person, what was ever scarier was that he was levelled with me. I'm lying flat on that floor and he's looking at me with a predatory hunger. I tried to sit up but he taped on the shoulder in warning so I stayed lying down. I didn't dare to turn away from him in case he took it as a sigh of disrespect.
"Now, tell me what do you know?" He sat crossed legged and stared down at me.
"I'm human and my name is Allison and there is a boy called Sebastian in my cell."
"That's all?" The vampire leaned down so that our nose is almost touching, "is that all?" He enunciated words carefully and smiled an eerie smile so that his fangs showed.
I gulped nervously and nodded. "Yes." My voice was barely audible.
He extended a hand and tipped my chin up. "Is that all?" He whispered.
I shivered but I still nodded. There is no way I could tell him about the boy in my dreams or the fact I could taste the air around someone if I was within five meters.
"One last chance. Tell me more, how you're feeling? Any unusual things happening to you?"
I stared into his eyes wondering if I could just stare him down. But I doubt that, it was as if he knew more than I do. Apart from the boy in my dreams and the tasting air thing there was nothing unusual that I know of.
"There's nothing more. I'm not feeling anything unusual." I was glad that my voice was steady and firm this time.
I watched wearily as Gabe shifted his position so that he was staring down at me again. "You don't know anything, do you?" His voice was genuinely surprised.
"Actually. I've been getting a lot of that lately. Of course I don't know anything!" I growled angrily and sat up, not caring if the vampire was angry or not.
"Care to tell me why I'm locked up in a cell?"
"Every hybrid stays there for three weeks until we're certain the person doesn't contain any diseases. Is in the rules, Allison." The vampire actually called my name, and what is it with everyone softening when I told them I don't know anything.
"We're not as bad as you think we are, Allison." He paused for a moment then waved the guards away. The two bowed respectfully and swiftly left.
"We're known as The Black Phantom, we have no leader but the oldest vampire takes charge. Who demands that every hybrid amongst the human sector must be bought to the nearest safe house as soon as possible? I'm certain you have a special ability, but we don't know what."
"How do you know?" My voice betrayed my curiosity.
"When my team found you, you were lying in a pool of your own blood outside an abandon building. We searched entire whole building but found nothing except cardboard boxes. We suspect that a master vampire might have erased your memory. Not only does it take power but it takes great amount of energy to do that to someone. So, unless your memory was extremely valuable. It will not happen."
"Oh." I said quietly, then after a moment I recomposed my face.
"Then why did you act like you were going to eat me than?" I glared at him again.
He shrugged carelessly, "I do that to all new hybrids. It makes them tell you more than what they want to."
"Uh-huh. Tell me why was Sebastian screaming and kicking when he came into my cell? Why do we have to stay in a cell?" I asked.
"Sebastian had so difficulties cooperating, it didn't work out as planned. As to the cells, they're not cells. They're the quarantine; every new hybrid must stay there for three months in case of any diseases, or problems." He was now sitting cross-legged again, his eyes searching my face curiously.
"Oh. Now will you tell me why you keep mumbling about a boy in your sleep?" He paused then smiled, "I must say, your resistance to danger is quite strong. Must hybrids freaked when they come this close to a vampire and started babbling but you're different."
"Uh-huh. No. I'm not telling you about the boy but I will tell you something else. Those guards are not completely loyal."
"How do you know?" He raised one eyebrow.
"You can taste the air?" He asked, his eyes widening almost comically.
"Yes. Right now you taste like amazement."
"Of course I'M!" He jumped up and shouted; he pulled me hand and dragged me out of the door. Walking swiftly down the hallway to a door labelled: 'Archive'
"Where are we going?" I asked as we speed past rooms.
He paused abruptly, causing me to bump into his chest. I pushed him away and glared at him as he grinned down at me like a child.
"Allison, I think is high time that you found out who you really are, and discover your destiny."
Oh crap.
