A large robin sat on a nest roughly the size of a hula hoop. Her brown-red feathers were tinged with gold, just a slight glimmer as she moved about. Another robin, bright red, the gold on his feathers evident, paced between large golden eggs. His feathers were fluffed up, but he was warm. Actually, he was nervous. He was muttering to himself, shaking his head and ruffling his feathers even more.
The female clucked impatiently. "You know who she is, Gerard. Just find her!" The male stopped and stared at his mate, eyes dark as a cloudy sky. "And why are you concerned? She won't know who you are!"
Gerard just shook his head. "No, Karla. A human? How can we deal with a human Keeper? After all, we might live long enough to see these eggs hatch." As he spoke, a single feather floated down from his tail and turned to ash. He pretended not to noticed and continued pacing. "And she will know me, Karla. And I'll know her."
"How?" Karla demanded. Gerard looked at her, ignoring the piles of ash that surrounded her. "These eggs are special. The last phoenix eggs. How will you know it is her?"
Gerard looked away, his eyes closing. "She'll have dreams."
*So, a short prologue. I promise that the first chapter, following the People, will be much longer. Please, R+R!*
