I once had a friend who would talk obsessively about a girl he liked. I kept encouraging him to tell her but of course he wouldn't. In fact, he freaked out about it. This poem is about a truth I learned from him, but I switched the gender because it fits the analogy better.

she loved him like a piece of costume jewelry
that shiny truth that's also make-believe.
