Chapter Eight: The 'Rein' City
Through snow we walked, and through that snow, memories kept distracting me from where I was stepping. I slipped, tripped and fell a few and Achille had to help me up every time. I was not use to walking with such old fashioned prosthetic limbs... I remember attending a funeral during a winter a long time ago and I was forced not to shed a tear. When the funeral was over, I walked by myself crying in the snow for who knows how long. I wore a black sweater dress with a buttoned and fuzzy jacket with a knitted pink scarf by the person who had died. When I fell, I just remained in the snow crying silently. For if my cries were loud enough, then I would be forced to be part of my own funeral. I rolled over my back and watched the gently and cold snow fall from the grey sky...no... it was a vanilla sky. It was the first time I noticed how colorless the world was during a snowy season. 'When I get to heaven, I will be happy because this world is too colorless for the innocent.'
"Bibi?" whispered Achille from my daydream. I looked back over him who was following me with a suitcase and Amandine in his arms. I could tell beneath those long whit bangs was a worried face. I faked a smile and asked:
"What is it? Bathroom break?" I half heartily laughed. Achille shook his head and stared at me.
"Are you well? You looked troubled." he frowned.
"The only trouble I'm in is not having that orb with me and walking in these old fashioned prosthetic legs. How in the world did anyone used these?" I asked though I didn't really care for the answer.
"...How far are we from the city?" he asked.
"Considering we left last night, I say we still have at least a day and a half left. We should get there at night. Security shouldn't give us trouble." I smiled. We marched on through the deserted and broken down city. I took a small glance inside on of the buildings and saw a glimpse of a small skeleton. Those who use to live here... even children... There is nothing but death in the land... I squeezed my hand tight and bit my bottom lip. That devil will pay for everything he's done.
"What is the city like, Bibi? Are the people still the same fifty years ago?" he asked.
"I wouldn't know, considering I didn't really live amongst the people most of my life and I don't know how people lived fifty years ago." I rolled my eyes. "Let alone, does anyone know anything of your time or the times before you."
"Humanity has forgotten the past?"
"More like we were force to forget and for the new generations, they were never taught."
"Why?"
"Corbin. He states that he is the future so there is no point of worrying about the past. He rules the world so there is no one to stop him and he's an immortal like you so he really is the future. However... I will be the one to stop him once and for all!"
"Really?"
"What?"
"Don't you think there's others who had said the same thing?" he smirked. "Whatever they planned obviously failed for whatever reason. I can see all your flaws in your plan."
I glared back at him and spat:"You don't even know my plan!"
"I know enough. You need that orb for whatever your doing, I can guess you are part of some sort of rebellious force, and with your ability and your cost, there is no way you can defeat Corbin." he grinned. "I know what your'e feeling and I know what you're thinking right now, my beloved Bibi."
"You..." I muttered. "Don't know shit!"
"I know that you took your tracker out before when you joined the rebellious side. To earn their trust you had to but a tracker back inside you and work under Corbin for some time, retrieving any useful information and send it back to your team. Only having your team to order you to steal the orb from Corbin and run away somewhere to keep a down low. But you have a traitor in your team so 'your plan' is starting to fail. Corbin will soon locate the rebels and kill them including the traitor that gives you all away. Though you have abilities, there's a limit to how much you can use them. Look at your legs for example, how long will it take for your body to be completely prosthetic? " he frowned. I walked up to him and slapped him. "We struck a nerve, Casey!" he said in a high pitched voice.
"I don't need someone like you." I growled as I marched on.
"Veronica! Come back to me! It was a mistake I made! A mistake I say!" he laughed while skipping with tears in his eyes.
"Get away from me psycho! Don't make me use my ability on you!" I said while turning around.
"Clarice!" he screamed as he hugged me tightly.
"Get off! I mean it! Or I'll-"
"I didn't mean to hurt you... I didn't mean to upset you. Shhh... It's ok now. I'm here and I'm always going to be here, just to help you my love. I just want you to be happy baby. I just want you to love me... I just want to be loved." he whispered while shaking. I looked to where he dropped his suitcase and Amandine in the snow and frowned. I feel sorry for him... no matter how much he upsets me I can't leave him like this. "Forgive me for being a monster... forgive me for being what I am and not controlling myself. I didn't ask for this power or curse... I never did." he cried. I placed my hand on his back and rubbed it.
"I don't hate you. I don't blame you for whatever you've done." I sighed. "Just... just behave, Achi." I said. Achille let go and stared down at me while tears still kept running down his face. "Know quit making an ugly face and let's keep moving." I smirked while wiping his tears away. Achille smiled and ran back to pick his suitcase and Amandine from the snow. We pressed on to the city and took a couple breaks in between. We were silent for most of the part of the journey except for when Achille hummed a stranger tune. "What are you humming?" I finally asked.
"...I don't know." Achille frowned.
"You don't know the name of the song? Or you were making it as you go?" I raised my brow.
"I don't know the name of it." he said while stopping. "I know I have heard of it before, but I don't know where... I feel as if it was a very close song to me."
"That's how music affects you." I giggled. "No worries, you'll remember it." I said while motioning my hand for him to keep following me.
"Do you remember the song, Amandine?" he asked while looking down. A few footsteps later he sighed: "I see... you are still upset with me... Did you know Amandine use to be a famous singer?" Achille asked me.
"Really?" I rolled my eyes. "Like the Zombie Hearts?" I joked.
"No... the Zombie Hearts never made it out of their garage to go big like Amandine... However, she was really famous! You would always hear her songs on the radio and-" he started but dropped his things and fell to his knees.
"Achi?" I asked while turning around. I saw him on the ground shaking. "Achi!" I yelled while running towards him. "Get a grip! Don't loose yourself now!" I said while crouching next to him.
"No... it's not that." he muttered.
"What? What is it then? What's wrong?" I asked.
"I'm sorry... I just don't want to remember." he whispered while standing back up. "I'm sorry... Can you carry Amandine for me? She must be annoyed that I keep dropping her in the snow so much." he chuckled lightly while picking the suitcase back up.
"Uh...s-sure." I said while picking the doll up. I brushed the snow off of her blonde hair and stared into her sad and empty eyes. I shivered... Something isn't right with this thing. "So..." I started.
"Can we not talk for a while?" I groaned while walking ahead.
"Um... yeah... sure." I blinked. When he said 'a while' I didn't know he meant until we get to the city, because that was how long the silence was. While we walked, we both were lost in our own thoughts. I was remembering my past and thinking of what I have to do for the future. Achille... it was hard to know what he was thinking. My best guess is that he was reflecting on his past as well... I heard him breathed under his breath a couple of times saying:
"Forgive me... forgive me..." What was it that he did so wrong that his own conscious won't let him rest? What he have possibly done to make him punish himself and wish for death? I shook my head and sighed... There is nothing anyone can do to save him and with him in this state.. There is nothing he can do to save himself either...
It took a lot of time, but when we arrived at the city, it was in the middle of the night and there was only one way in and out of the city and it is guarded well. "This is the city?" Achille asked while hiding behind a broken building with me.
"Shhh!" I hushed. "Don't let them hear you!" I whispered.
"Oh...ok." he whispered back. "So this is the city?" he asked again in a whisper.
"Yes. But we can't get in using the front door."
"It looks more like a prison and why not?"
"For one, neither of us has a tracker so the guards would believe we are trying to ambush the city. Second, you don't have a code so they'll know you are not a citizen of Corbin. And finally, even if we told them we were from another city of Corbin, they would check their papers and see that we are lying!"
"Huh?"
"When people are traveling the world, they have to sign a paper that tells where they are going and when they are going to return. The people have to arrive at the city exactly when they say they are and return exactly when they say they will or they will be suspected of rebellious conspiracy."
"Are you serious?" he frowns.
"Corbin doesn't trust anyone who is alive."
"...So how are we going to get in?" he asked while looking at the city?
"Through the waste line."
"Pardon?" he frowned at me.
"Through the waste line. You know... the sewers. Through the waste line the air and water is toxic enough to kill anyone who travels through it."
"And we can survive how?"
"You are an immortal so it won't affect you. My legs are prosthetic so it won't bother me and I can use my sleeve to breathe while traveling through it." I said while walking off.
"Wait! Wait for me!" he whispered loudly.
"Shhh!" I hushed.
