Chapter 4: Sibling Rivalry to a Whole New Level
It had been a few days since the party and Joshua was restless. He had been listening to his girlfriend and he was beginning to grow tired of her attitude. Whenever he asked her something she would brush him off like he was beneath her, maybe because she was getting just as frustrated as he was but at the moment he didn't care. They had been all talk and no action for weeks and he was ready to make a move. One morning he woke up before her and he decided he was gonna implement his own plan, one he had been plotting long before the Vincent party. Grabbing his phone he went outside, dialing a specific number. "Hey, its time. Do what we talked about. I'll meet you there later." He explained before hanging up his phone.
Melissa woke up in Joshua's apartment by herself. Looking around her boyfriend was nowhere to be seen. Running a hand through her hair she felt her anger rise, Joshua knew how much she hated when he left her when she was asleep. She was about to head home when she heard the door of his apartment open. "Joshua, where were you?" She asked putting her hands on her hips.
"Just making a few calls, what are you so pissed about?"
"You know how much I hate it when you walk out when I'm asleep. Who the hell is so important you needed to talk to at..." Now she was yelling but he was paying her no attention. Joshua ignoring her just made her anger rise even more.
"I'm tired of biding our time so I'm taking matters into my own hands." He snapped walking over to his closet to pack a bag.
"What the fuck are you talking about?" She exclaimed.
"This whole time I've been doing what you say and what has that accomplished? We don't know where your dad's money is, your fucking sister probably knows..."
"How would she know?! She doesn't even know our dad was a mob boss! If you would just pull your head out of your ass and let me..."
Melissa's head was snapped to the side from a harsh slap to the side of her face. Hesitantly she turned her head back to look at him. Her eyes the size of saucers. "No, I'm tired of listening to you. Its done nothing so now I'm deciding what we do. This is what we should have done a long time ago. "
Rubbing her cheek Melissa looked at her boyfriend. When she felt like her voice wasn't shaky anymore she opened her mouth. "So what are we going to do?" This side of him scared her but she figured she still needed to go along with him to get what she ultimately wanted.
"You are coming with me and someone is gonna handle your sister."
"What are you talking about?"
"You'll find out later, now come on." He demanded grabbing her arm leading her out of the apartment.
Abby decided to spend her day running errands, anything to keep her mind off Nathan. Ever since the party he was all she could think about. His green eyes, how smooth his voice was, and overall how happy she felt around him. Not since her ex did she feel that kind of happiness. It felt so wrong because Melissa told her to stay away from him but all she wanted to do was talk and be with him. She wasn't sure if he felt the same but that didn't stop her from thinking about him.
She had been gone since early that morning and by lunchtime she was done and ready for a lazy afternoon. Pulling her blonde hair out of its bun she let it fall on her shoulders and slipped her feet out of her ballet flats. Feeling a little cold she pulled down the sleeves of her navy sweater and went to turn on the heat. As she walked into the kitchen she felt a hand being placed over her mouth. Letting out a shrill scream she tried to fight her attacker but it was no use. His strength easily overpowered her but that didn't mean she couldn't make it a little more difficult for him. Throwing her arms from side to side she knocked off vases, pictures, anything to try to slow him down but it just seemed to irritate him.
She felt herself being thrown to the ground, then felt a punch to her face making her vision blur. As much as she tried to fight it she felt herself drifting and soon all she saw was black. "All right, lets go." She faintly heard someone say as she closed her eyes.
Tommy sat outside the Devereux home in his car. He saw Abby walk in but noticed she accidently left the front door cracked which sparked his interest. Unbuckling his seatbelt he decided it would be best to check it out. Pushing open the door his eyes widened seeing all the damage in the foyer. It was clear something happened and Abby was missing. Her purse laid on a table with her shoes close by on the floor. Looking around her saw broken glass from a few pictures and a vase with flowers scattered all over the place. There had been a struggle between Abby and someone else but he couldn't tell who the other person was. He continued to walk through the house until he saw the back door was wide open. Grabbing his phone from his pocket he dialed Nathan's number.
Nathan had just woken up when he heard his phone ringing. Seeing Tommy's name on the caller ID he quickly picked it up. "Hey Tommy, what's up?"
"I think something has happened to Abby," Nathan felt his blood go cold. "I was outside her house but she left the door ajar, so I went to check it out. Its a mess, mate, I think someone has taken her."
"I'll be over there in ten minutes." Nathan said quickly before hanging up.
Tom sat behind his computer, a list of possible suspects on the screen. His eyes were stuck on one name in particular. Joshua Giuliani, he was a year older than Nathan and Tom remembered him well. He used to be friends with Jay until they had a falling out a few years ago, ever since then they had been rivals. Tom knew Joshua wanted to start a gang of his own but he could never get a following so he was never a real threat. Then he remembered seeing him with Melissa Devereux at the Vincent party. If he used her last name he could get a bunch of men behind him. 'I wonder if he's using her just to gain some power here.'
Hearing a knock at his door he was torn away from his thoughts. Looking up he noticed Max walking into the room. "Man, Nath just ran out of the house faster than I've ever seen him run in my life." He chuckled sitting on his brother's bed. "What are you doing? You've been in here all morning."
"Remember that Joshua Giuliani kid?"
"Yeah, he used to come over here all the time before something happened with him and Jay a while back. Why?"
"Because I saw him at Vincent's the night he was killed. He looked to be with Melissa Devereux, it appeared they were together."
Max furrowed his eyebrows. "Wait a minute Joshua and Jay were friends right before Jay and Melissa started..."
Something clicked in Tom's head. "Go get Jay, we need to talk to him about this."
Nathan was sure he broke every traffic law as he hurried over to the Devereux home. Running up the steps he found Tommy standing in the foyer and the remains of a huge struggle. "Ok it looks like she came in, put her stuff down before heading towards the kitchen that's where the fight broke out." Tommy explained leading him to the back door. "Right here something happened to make her stop, I don't know if he hit her or what but she was probably carried out of here."
The thought of something or someone hitting her made Nathan's blood boil. "And you didn't see anyone come in here?"
"Just her, they probably came in sometime after she left this morning and just waited for her to come back." Tommy sighed. "This doesn't look good, Nath."
Nathan took in the scene. "Ok I've got an idea, her sister, see if you can find her. Maybe if you track her down she'll lead you to Abby. Call me the minute you find something."
"What are you going to do?"
"I'm gonna talk to Tom, if I'm going to get all this straightened out I'm going to need my brothers help." He sighed before walking out of the house.
Tom looked up seeing Jay and Max come into his room. "What's up?" Jay asked crossing his arms.
"We need you to tell us what you know about Joshua Giuliani." Tom instructed.
"Uh..." Jay muttered running a hand through his curly hair. "We used to be friends. He's power hungry, I'll tell you that. All he used to talk about was making a name for himself in the business. By any means necessary. When I started becoming closer to Melissa he came to me with this plan of using her to start our own mob."
"Wait, he talked to you about starting your own little mob?" Max asked.
"Yeah, but I couldn't use Melissa like that, so I told him to leave and never come back. I also told him to stay away from her."
"But she was with him at Vincent's house the other night."
Jay's sighed, "I was hoping that wasn't him. I just wonder if he's been using her all this time."
Tom was about to say something else when they heard Nathan yell from downstairs. Hopping up from their seats they ran downstairs to see what he wanted. "What's going on, Nath?" Siva asked as he walked out of the kitchen.
"Abby is missing." Nathan announced. "I know you told me to stay away from her but I know she's different. I talked to her at the party and I just...I just know."
"But she's missing?"
"I had Tommy follow her, he said today she went into her house but she left the door cracked. When he went to check it out the bottom floor was a mess. There was a struggle between her and an intruder and now she's gone."
Tom sighed. "And you're sure she didn't just step out without Tommy noticing her?"
"Her purse and shoes were still sitting in the house, I'm pretty sure a girl wouldn't leave those behind." Nathan explained.
Jay looked at Tom. "Do you think this is a coincidence?"
"What are you talking about?"
"We were just talking about Joshua, he's with Melissa but she's not the one he needs. Abby holds everything to the Devereux name even if she doesn't know it."
Now the pieces of the puzzle started coming together. Max held a hand up. "Ok so what if Joshua had someone take Abby but does that mean he also killed Edmund and Victoria? And why does he need Melissa?"
"He was using Melissa's name to gain a following we know that much. Maybe as they got closer that's when he decided to kill them." Jay sighed not liking where this was headed. "Maybe originally he thought she would be the head beneficiary or at least she knew about her father's work."
"Did she Jay?" Siva asked.
"I'm pretty sure she did, she just didn't want to tell me."
"Ok this is making a little bit of sense but there's still a lot of holes." Max sighed.
Nathan looked at his brothers. "But right now we need to concentrate on finding Abby."
"Nath, I'm not about to risk my life for a girl you barely know."
"Tom, I think its pretty clear Abby doesn't know about any of this. By the looks of her house she was taken against her will and I will not let her die just because you lot don't want to help me save her."
Tom looked at his youngest brother, he definitely wasn't a kid anymore. Glancing at everyone else he saw them nod their heads. "All right, we'll save her but how? We don't even know where she is."
Nathan was about to say something when he felt his phone vibrate. Taking it out he saw Tommy's name. "What's up?"
"I spotted Melissa Devereux just outside of town. I think Joshua was with her but I also saw other guys in the car with them as well."
"Where are they headed?" Nathan asked as he and his brothers ran out of the house to the family car.
"Uh, looks like an old house out by the lake. About five miles from your place. I'll meet you guys soon and take you there."
"All right thanks, we're heading that way now." He said before hanging up. "Down by the lake." He told Max as he started their car.
Abby woke up with a pounding headache. As she regained consciousness she was shocked to feel her mouth gagged, her hands tied behind her back, and her feet bound in front of her. Struggling against her restraints she looked around the room. It was empty except for a couch off in the corner and a few empty beer bottles. 'Where am I?' She thought as she tried to scream through the gag.
She felt the ropes tighten against her wrists almost cutting off her circulation. Leaning her head on the wall behind her she heard voices approaching the room. Her eyes widened seeing two very muscular gentlemen walk through the doorway. "Oi look who's finally awake." One laughed.
"Finally," The other smirked walking over to her. Abby winced as he ran his rough hand across her cheek. "Such a pretty girl."
His voice made her skin crawl. Turning her head she refused to look him in the eye. She heard him laugh as he stepped away from her. "So when are they supposed to get here?"
"Joshua said they're almost here, they had to pick up a few people along the way." The other one explained looking down at his phone.
'No, it can't be that Joshua,' Abby thought as the two men cracked open a beer and walked around the room. Inside she hoped that someone would be there soon to help her. When she saw her sister and her boyfriend walk into the room Abby thought she was rescued but seeing Joshua's evil smirk made her heart drop. 'He's behind all this?'
"You kidnapped my sister?" Melissa exclaimed looking at Abby to Joshua.
"I told you, we're taking matters into our own hands." Joshua said throwing his bag onto the couch. He looked over at the bound girl before bending down to be eye level with her. "I'm sure you're pretty confused right now. Well let me fill you in." He pointed over to Melissa. "You see your sister over there and I have been plotting this for a while now."
Melissa suddenly felt guilt ridden under her sister's disappointed stare but quickly shook off those feelings. "Sorry, sissy."
He reached down to take the gag out of her mouth. "Do you know who your father really was?" Abby shook her head. "He was one of the most well known mob bosses in all of London. People respected him but mostly they feared him, even while you lived in America. How do you think he earned all his money? All that money you spent on shopping sprees and your schooling?" Abby felt like she was being repeatedly punched in the stomach with every new secret being revealed. "Well I want, no I needed that power and your sister needed it as well."
"Melissa...why?" Abby asked, her voice hoarse.
"Because...because you were always dad's favorite!" Melissa yelled. "Do you know how long I've been compared to you? Do you have any idea how it feels to be the 'lesser' child? I was tired of it and that's when I met Joshua." She smiled walking over to her boyfriend.
Joshua wrapped his arm around her shoulder. "But you see my darling, now here's a part of the plan you didn't know about." Melissa glanced up at him with a questioning look. "I only needed you for a little while. You're replaceable now." He smirked. "Take her in the other room." He instructed.
Melissa was about to protest when she felt arms being wrapped around her, forcibly dragging her from her spot. "Let go of me!" She yelled as she was drug down the hallway.
Joshua laughed, shaking his head. Looking down at Abby again he whispered. "Besides I've gotten what I really need now."
Abby felt tears sting her eyes. "If you haven't already figured it out, I was the one that killed your parents. I really only meant to kill your dad but your mum just had to get in the way." He chuckled. "You see I originally thought Melissa was going to get control of your father's estate but then when you, the one who hasn't even been here for two years, was named the beneficiary I knew I had tricked the wrong girl." He ran his hand over her black eye. "But you can end this right now, just tell me where your father's money is."
"I-I don't know where it is." She stammered.
She cried out feeling a slap across her face. "Don't fucking lie to me! You're in charge of your father's estate you have to know where it is!"
"Josh! We have a problem!" He heard someone yell from the hall.
"Great." He sighed placing the gag back in her mouth. "What is it?"
"I think the Caruso's are on their way here." Ben said.
Joshua rolled his eyes. "You think? Why don't you go find out? You, Kenneth, and Brian go check around the perimeter." He commanded, watching as they ran down the stairs.
Max parked the car a little bit away from the property making the guys walk the short distance to the house. They walked through a thicket of trees to remain hidden from any lookouts that could be eyeing the yard. "Are you sure this is the place?" Jay asked.
"Tommy said it was." Nathan sighed. They had told Tommy to stay close by but hidden just in case they needed his help.
"Guys, get down." Tom whispered seeing three men walking towards them. He noticed they were unarmed as they came closer but that didn't stop him from grabbing his own gun he had tucked in the back of his pants. Motioning for Jay and Siva to follow him they quickly took them down.
Nathan and Max ran towards them as they got the men on the ground. Tom pointed his gun at one of them. "Who's in that house?"
He didn't answer but when he heard the gun click he opened his mouth. "Josh-Joshua Giuliani, he's in there with the Devereux sisters."
Nathan's head perked up knowing they were in the right place. "What is he planning?"
The man sighed. "He's holding Melissa hostage I don't know what he plans on doing to her. Before we came out here he was trying to make Abigail tell him where her father's money is."
"How does he plan on making her tell him?" Max asked.
"By any means necessary."
Nathan's eyes widened, if he didn't get inside soon Abby could be in serious danger. "Is anyone armed?" Tom demanded.
"I think Josh is but that's it."
Tom nodded cocking his gun. "Well all right boys, you're going to help us."
Abby groaned feeling a strong kick to her stomach. "Still not know where the money is?" She heard Joshua yell.
She knew her nose was bleeding and her whole body hurt but she still refused to tell him anything. The last thing she was going to do was let Joshua get his hands on her father's money and power, even if that meant taking a beating. "Still gonna remain silent? Well then I guess I'm gonna have to resort to extreme measures." He growled walking over to the doorway. She saw him tell one of the larger men something before they walked down the hall.
As she tried to steady her breathing she saw her sister walk back into the room. The man forced her to sit on her knees as her hands were tied behind her back just like Abby. "I really didn't want to do this." Joshua sighed walking up behind Melissa.
Abby's head snapped up hearing a gun click. She shook her head seeing Joshua point the gun to the back of her sister's head. Melissa felt tears come to her eyes feeling the barrel being pressed to her hair. "J-Joshua." She murmured.
"Shut up," He commanded. "Now tell me little Abigail, you going to tell me what I want to know?"
Finally letting her tears go Abby nodded her head. "Take the gag out of her mouth." He told one of his lackeys.
Before he had the chance everyone heard loud bangs and shots being fired from downstairs. "What the fuck is going on now? Watch her." He pointed to Melissa as he cut the bounds on Abby's feet. "You're coming with me." He whispered picking her up, dragging her with him.
Nathan looked at the bodies laying on the floor. He and Jay checked around the bottom floor but no sign of the girls. "Oh the Caruso family." He heard someone say from the top of the stairs. Nathan's jaw clenched seeing Joshua there with a terrified Abby. She was bound and it appeared she had taken a small beating before he got there. "Looking for me?"
"Let her go." Nathan commanded.
Joshua tsk'ed as they walked down the rest of the stairs. "I can't do that, I kind of need her." He chuckled.
Melissa fought against her restraints, suddenly she felt one rope give just enough so she could reach into her back pocket where she always kept her knife. 'One good thing dad taught me, be prepared.' She thought as she cut her ropes. She noticed her one guard had turned his back on her just enough for her to sneak up behind him. Taking her knife she stabbed him right in the back of the knee, cringing hearing him yell out in pain. She pulled the knife from his leg to stab him again in the heart making him fall over.
Joshua stopped hearing a yell but that gave Jay and Nathan enough time to strike. Jay grabbed the gun, wrestling it away from him while Nathan grabbed Abby getting her out of the way but everyone stopped hearing a single shot. The air went cold, no one knew what really happened until Joshua's body fell to the floor, blood pooling around the wound in his stomach. Jay held the gun in his hands, sighing he stepped away as he turned the safety back on. Nathan looked up at his brother before turning his attention back to the shaking girl in his arms. Hesitantly he removed the gag from her mouth. "You all right?" He whispered stepping behind her to cut the ropes from her hands.
Abby shook her head, still in disbelief but that didn't stop her from throwing her arms around his neck. Nathan was stunned at first but he instantly relaxed wrapping his arms tight around her. "Shh, you're ok, everything will be ok." He muttered into her hair.
Melissa ran down the stairs, her knife still in hand. She looked at everyone before spotting Joshua's lifeless body on the floor. "Is he...is he dead?" She asked.
"Yeah..." Jay mumbled, not wanting to look her in the eye.
Tom and Max glanced each other, both thinking the same thing. 'Where do we go from here?'
Later on that night Nathan refused to let Abby out of his sight while she didn't want to be left alone. After much begging Tom let her come stay at their home, just for the night. Nathan and Abby sat in the bathroom checking over her wounds. "Wow, that's a shiner." She sighed looking in the mirror, running her fingers over her bruised skin.
"Does it hurt?" Nathan asked, standing behind her.
She shook her head, "Not as bad as you'd imagine."
"Did he hit you anywhere else."
Biting her bottom lip she reached the hem of her shirt, lifting it up to reveal her bruised torso leaving her in her black lace bra. "Jesus," Nathan gasped,
Abby winced suddenly feeling very exposed she tried to wrap her arms around herself but stopped feeling Nathan's warm hands on her arms. "I'm sorry this happened." He sighed stepping close so there was no space between them.
"Its not your fault." She smiled weakly. For the second time she thought he was about to kiss her but before he had the chance they heard a pounding on the door.
"Nath! You almost done in there!" They heard Jay's familiar voice yell from the other side.
Abby's mouth dropped as she bent down to pick up her shirt. "Um...I guess we should go..."
"Yeah...yeah, good idea." Nathan coughed as they headed to the door.
Jay smirked seeing his little brother and the girl he knew he was crushing on leave the bathroom together. Once she was out of earshot he whispered. "Damn mate, move fast don't ya?"
"Oh get out," Nathan scoffed. "Nothing happened, I was just making sure she wasn't seriously hurt."
"Uh huh, that's why you two were in there for so long." Jay laughed walking past his brother into the bathroom.
Nathan rolled his eyes following the blonde down the hallway to the guest room. He found her sitting on the bed, her head in her hands. He could hear her sniffling from the doorway. "Hey, what's wrong?" He panicked grasping her shoulders.
When she looked up he felt his heart break a little. She looked broken and terrified and he had no idea how to help. "M-my sister betrayed me...how-how could she hate me so much to the point of wanting to kill me?"
Sighing to himself he sat beside her, his arm still on her shoulder. "I-I don't know," He muttered. "But just know I'm not going to let anything happen to you."
Nodding her head she looked at him. "Thank you...for everything. For saving me for...being so nice to me now."
"Why wouldn't I be nice to you?" He cocked an eyebrow at her.
"Because you don't know me...we just met the other day."
"I don't care, I feel like I've known you for so much longer."
Abby blushed, brushing a piece of hair behind her ear. "I feel the same way."
Tom stood outside the room, listening to every word. Sighing to himself he walked back downstairs to the living room where Max and Siva were sitting. "He's got it bad." He announced.
They knew who he was talking about before he even mentioned a name. "Well I think she's proven she has no idea what her father did. Maybe we can end all this right here with her." Siva said looking up from his book.
"What are you talking about Seev?" Max asked.
"Think about it if the Devereux and Caruso families combine we'll be unstoppable. No one will be able to touch us."
Tom shook his head. "He's got a point, Tom."
"I know he does, I'm just gonna have to think about it. What do we know about Melissa? And what about Giuliani?"
"We've got someone outside her apartment at all times so we'll know if she leaves." Siva explained closing his book.
"And Joshua along with his lackeys' bodies have been taken care of."
"Good, all right tomorrow we'll talk more about a Caruso/Devereux partnership but right now I'm exhausted, we should all get some sleep."
He saw his brothers nod their heads as they all headed upstairs. Passing the guest room he saw Nathan and Abby still talking. "Nath, we're going to bed."
"All right," Nathan sighed looking at the blonde girl. "I'll see you in the morning."
She smiled, nodding her head. Hopping off the bed Nathan couldn't resist he leaned down to give her a peck on the lips. When he pulled back he almost ran out of the room, closing the door behind him. "Oh my God what did I just do?" He wondered out loud.
Abby was speechless for a few seconds before she finally breathed. "Finally." She blushed running her fingertips over her lips.
