Chronicle 1: Xerxes

It was the late afternoon in the human capital of Avirdidatias. Normally the Male humans would be heading home, as their wives slaved over a hot fire cooking dinner. The children would be playing in the streets of the city as school had ended hours ago. They would be called into their respective houses and sit down for dinner. Families would sit and eat and, while talking about the day's events.

Although this was the norm it was changed for this night and this night only. Once the sun was down a ceremony was to begin. A celebration for all humans; the night of the new star. It was a glorious occasion were the 3 guardians, the oldest men in human culture, would gather and take a new star from the void and give it to the gods. The gods would then take it and mold it into a god. That god would then be given an element, emotion, area etc. That would be his or her name followed by the suffix star.

This occasion was a time of joy and celebration for all humans poor, middle class, and rich. This one time of all the days of the year everyone came in peace and with one common interest, to see the new star.

Xerxes Izala was a young poor boy. He was 14 with short brown hair and dark brown eyes. He was rather tall at 5'7. He lived in the slums or lower district as it was called. He was an unnoticeable poor boy with no future, or at least that's what most rich folk thought of him.

Secretly Xerxes had a certain powers that some would kill him on the spot for. He was a young mage or Volini as it was called in the old language. He was not controlled by the tower and was a rebel mage in training. This was illegal and was punishable by death. Xerxes didn't care as he had seen the worst of the worst in his life.

He joined the rebel mage training center at the age of 10 and has been training ever since. He agreed with the rebels that King Orion was a cruel and unfair ruler. He favored the rich and shunned the poor. A good example of this is that the walls of the lower district were made of wooden logs stuck together while the inner district's walls were steel. Now then to understand this you must see the city in your mind. The city was made of 4 sectors, all going in a circular motion towards the castle in the middle. The first district was the lower district. Home to the criminals, rebels, and the poor. It was a sad district with little hope in it. The motto was if you're born in the lower district you stay in the lower district.

Next is the Mid-layer or mid district. It was home to the middle class and people who could afford food every night. Rebel influence was small in this area and the king's army patrolled at constant intervals.

Second to last is the inner layer, or the rich district. They had the best life style and were quite wealthy. Most in this district owned slaves from all the lower districts and could feed the entire Lower district on their own. The only people allowed to live in this district were the king's friends and the rich. Most people despised this district as it was the most favored by the king.

Finally we have the king's district. This is the smallest district of them all, as it only held the castle. It was surrounded by all the other districts and was the most fortified of the districts. The king stayed here most of the time and Rebel influence was zero here. This is the area of the night of the new star.

The rebels formed to unite the human kingdoms together into one big city, not one split into many sides. Their anger started to simmer as the King declared an unneeded war against the Dragonborn, a race of man who could turn into dragons. The war was apparently to gain land and to cleanse the land of the half-humans.

The lower district and half of the middle disagreed with the war, but they had no say in the war. Only the ignorant believed it was good. The war was still happening today, even after 10 yrs.

The next thing that sparked the fires of war was the king's declaration of any man between the ages of 15 and 25 must join the army for at least 5 yrs. This forced many men to fight for an unwanted cause. Many families lost their sons or husbands. Most of these recruits happened to come from the lower district.

Finally the main event that ignited the fires of war was that the king decided that all provinces not attached to the main city had to give 75% of all products produced to the king. This caused many men in the provinces to become angered and join the rebels.

As the war progressed the rebel's strength grew. Now they are nowhere near the strength of the Imperial forces, but they are stronger than a couple guards. They use their power to commit small annoying crimes until they can enlist the help of the elves.

Now this sets the stage for our young Xerxes. This young boy is trying out for a team, along with 13 other mage apprentices, to be an envoy to the elves. The team was to be constructed of two people, two being so they can be more undetectable. One was to be an experienced rebel soldier, while the other a mage apprentice. The chosen mage would be able to skip the next 3 years of his or her training and become a full-fledged mage.

Xerxes stood in the dark basement of his master's house. He along with 12 other mage apprentices was to be chosen for a very importance mission. They all longed for a chance to prove themselves in this mission, even though it was just to be an envoy. All the boys wanted to be acknowledged as a great hero and king slayer, this mission was the door to that goal.

All the boys wore long robes of black. Each robe had a hood to hide their faces in case they were to ever enter battle and survive. Each apprentice also wore a silver ring with an emerald in the center; this was the ring of apprenticeship. It was said that their instructors could open the ring when they passed their final exams, and the ring would give them a special gift.

Xerxes along with all the other boys wanted this gift of power, knowledge, or any other great weapon. Each boy wanted this gift to defeat the king and save their home from supreme dictatorship.

Xerxes legs were acing, the teachers had been keeping them for a long time. It had been at least 30 minutes of straight standing. He looked over to his right to see how his friend James was faring. James was a boy with Blonde-brown hair with green eyes. He was about 5'5 and was the nicest boy Xerxes new. He considered him to be his best friend.

Xerxes saw James was standing with a slight slouch. He looked as tired as Xerxes felts. He sighed to himself. This is ridiculous. He thought.

Xerxes looked down to his feet trying to pass the time by going over some spells in his head. For you see the exam to see if you got to be the envoy was a tournament. Every boy was to try his best and the winner was to be the envoy. Xerxes wanted to be released from the rebel training academy so bad. He had lost 4 years of his life to this school as it may be called. He hated the long days of silence as students studied and the grueling training sessions.

As he thought; a bang sounded through the small room. Xerxes jumped to attention as did a couple other boys.

He looked around the room. He saw the dirt walls and wooden beams holding the house and dirt up. As he continued to look around he saw the entrance door. Outside the door was his mentor Bigandin.

Bigandin was a tall man at 5'8. He was at the age of 50 with graying hair; he had small gray stubble on his chin and dark blue eyes. He was a very smart man and well respected throughout the capitol, even in the wealthy districts. Bigandin was one of the old Archmages that lead the Mages tower. He was the last one after Marcus took over. He quit because of his age, but secretly he quit because of the kings tyranny. He was tired of doing the kings dirty work and refused to suck up to him. Or at least that was what he told his students.

He looked at his students and started to walk to the front of the room; never losing eye contact with them. His red robes glided against the ground as he moved. His leather boots made a dull squish sound on the dirt.

When he reached the front of the room he stood there and examined each and every one of his students. He took each and every one of them in, every feature. When his eyes reached Xerxes he felt Bigandin was staring into his soul. His soul filled with confusion and past experiences he would rather not relieve. Xerxes blinked and jumped himself to reality; no man could see his soul.

When Bigandin finished he cleared his breath and spoke.

"My students this is the time of choosing. I have taught you many a spell and incantation. I have filled your heads with knowledge that shall lead you through your journeys. I have become your mentor, and also your friend. Each of you is like a son to me; each with a different talent and potential. Now this is why I ask this." All the students starred back at him with fiery eyes. They all felt immense pride and gratefulness towards their achievements and master.

"I say again, this is why I say this. If you feel you are unprepared for this test I ask you to back out now. You shall not be considered a coward. If you wish to not take this test leave not." No one moved all the students stood their ground, granted some looked nervous each and every one wanted this chance.

"I repeat this is your only chance. Leave now or enter the chance for freedom and a greater chance at death." Again no one moved. Bigandin smiled.

"Well then if that's your choice, welcome to the tournament."
