Chapter 6: the setting sun

He was somewhere very high up. It looked like a cliff on some very tall mountain. There was snow all around them. That must be why it was so hard to breathe. And with each breath, a puffy, white cloud fluttered out of his mouth. It was pretty cold up there.

"Jack," whined a voice behind him. "I thought you said you quit smoking!"

He turned around. "Julia, love, I'm not smoking," he laughed. "It's just fog. From the cold."

"Oh, really?" she accused. "Well, I don't have any foggy breath, and I'm certainly not cold.

"You're not?" he was genuinely surprised.

She reached out a hand and touched his cheek. "Oh!" she gasped. "You really are cold. Here," she took off her scarf and wrapped it around his neck. "Better?"

"I'm still a bit cold," he told her truthfully.

Then she hugged him tightly, her arms around his waist. "Better?"

"Yes," he breathed. A small cloud of breath briefly separated them, but then she closed the gap with a kiss. That was when he knew it was a dream. Because she didn't love him. Not like that.

"I love you, Julia," he told her because it was a dream.

"I love you too, Jack," she smiled. "You are my sunshine."

As they kissed again, the snow slowly turned red and then orange, and he realized they were walking on clouds in the light of the setting sun.
