here is part of a short story i had written... tell me what you think! R & R!
The tall angular brunette took her first step into the vast open space of the already furnished apartment, making her move easier.
Tired from the exhausting work of having a baby two days ago, she sat down upon a kitchen chair looking out the window.
When she heard her baby move that was followed by a wail; she took her baby girl from the car seat, and placed her at her breast for her morning meal.
As her little Milanna lay nursing, tears sprang to the woman's eyes when she remembered her husband's gone, he had died trying to reach them in the hospital.
The doctors said it was his heart but she doesn't believe them, he had a strong heart stronger than anybodies she use too like to joke with him.
Looking upon her little angels face, she cried silently for the little babies that had been lost.
For the past 25 years, she and her husband tried many times to have a little one of our own to hold.
Instead her body failed to carry their last three babies' full term.
Oh the joy they had when the doctors told them they were surprised she had carried this one past 12 weeks.
That next Sunday in church, she remembered her and her husband thanking God for not taking this one as well; humbling themselves before God that day.
As darkness settled down around her, too tired to eat she went into a bed room off the hallway and lay under a dark pink cover, placing Milanna in a crib that surprised her at being in this place.
As her head hit the pillow, she was startled to feel something underneath.
Lifting the pillow she found a bundle of letters.
They were addressed from Sam Huston to Beverly Adams, intrigued her sleepiness wore off as she turned on the table lamp.
Opening the first one she read:
January 1, 1950
My dear Beverly, how are you? I received your letter in the afternoon post. My love you don't know how long I have waited for you to tell me that you have agreed to my proposal. Oh Beverly great news, my training has started today, in four years I'll be a real soldier but all I can think of is you. So many of my questions need answers but I will only ask one. Will you wait for me my darling?
Yours
Sam Huston
Sighing, she felt like this Sam's love to his Beverly.
It felt so much like her husband's love to her.
Unable to help herself, she opened the next one and the next till she had only a few left.
There was one marked four years after all the rest of the letters, opening that one she read Sam's letter to Beverly.
January 1, 1953
Beverly my darling, today I'm off to fight in Vietnam. The last letter I received encouraged me to return to my ailing mother and mention you had a child. Now that I've finished my training earlier than planned because of this war, I've become a soldier Are you proud of my my love? I know you have gotten married, and now have a child. For I have no right to send you my letter's or reply to yours but my sweet Beverly you'll always be in my heart. If I die in the war, please don't cry for me. I only ask how is the baby I will always long to meet. Is she as pretty as her mother or as handsome of a boy like his father? Beverly, please do not cry for me, I'll come home one day if it's my destiny.
Yours faithfully
Lieutenant Sam Huston
By the time she had finished Milanna had awoken for her "midnight snack", as the brunette called it.
Placing the baby at her breast she watched her eat and sighed.
How could have Beverly married anybody, when she had such a hero on her hands.
Maybe it was all a mistake and he'd gotten the wrong information.
But who knew; somehow she felt this love story that she was reading, do something to her heart.
Even though she had never known her parent's, having grown up in an orphanage, she hoped Beverly's little baby had grown up into a fine person.
Selecting the next letter after placing Milanna in her crib, she read Beverly's unsent letter to Sam Huston.
February 9th, 1954
My love my dream, my Sam Huston, why have you forgotten me. Your last letter confused me greatly. For I don't know where you had gotten that I married, because I wait patiently for you my love…
Sitting up she almost cried out 'I knew it', but looking at the crib, instead continued to read.
"Sam, I indeed have had a child but my baby girl wasn't conceived after wedlock.
My love, it happened so rather quickly that day you wrote and said you've gone to war.
I had lingered in the dark staring at your darkened window hoping it wasn't true, when a group of drunken vile men captured me.
They had dragged me into the dark of the night.
That same night, they abused me and took turns torturing me, touching me where I never dreamed it would happen till you my darling came to marry me.
One of the men tossed me onto his bed and took my virginity, heaving me off later and falling asleep leaving me broken and wounded on the floor.
In the morning after a horrifying night, I was blinded by the light when a man came into the place I had been tortured.
I was fully awake, did not care that I was partly naked, stared at the floor.
He took three steps into the room, and I heard a gun cock.
Afraid he was going to shoot me, I looked at him.
His dark green eyes pierced me straight into my soul, before he fired at the bunk above me, the same one that vile man had thrown me off the night before.
The shot awoke all the men from their drunken slumber; they all looked at me lying there in blood.
The man shot again, this time the vile man sleeping flung himself off the bed screaming as blood squirted out of his neck, he turned pale before his dark eyes squared with mine and closed forever.
The man that held the gun, looked at me, his eyes sending shivers down my spine.
He grabbed a blanket and wrapped me before taking me into his arms; I also noticed he had never even looked at me not like the other men.
As he stepped outside my whole body ached, I knew that after this day I'd never get married, because I was damaged goods.
Moaning from that pain, I closed my eyes on the surroundings, the man carrying me walked fast considering the load he had to bear.
After five minutes I heard the busy main street, before it suddenly got very quiet.
The man carried me to the doctor's office, kicking at the door, it open.
I heard the nurse gasp before the man holding me spoke, "found her in my cowboys bunk, and don't worry about him, he got what he deserved."
My heart hurt knowing that that vile man died and went to hell, but I didn't care I was ruined.
Darkness settled around me, as I felt him place me on a bed.
When I woke up the man was gone but my crying mother sat there next to me.
The doctor told me I probably conceive from that vile dead man, when he had said that I say that man's pale face again, his screams echoed off my mind.
Crying out, I felt a medicated slumber come over me.
After that day, for months I was convinced I hated the child inside of me, but I knew I would never abort it.
So now my love you know what has happened to me, I am all alone for my parent forced me to place my little Hannah in the orphanage.
She looked like me, not even a hit of the vile man, oh how I love her, my Sam.
If only you had returned and married me, we would have raised her to be a better person than the man that conceived her. I love you.
Forever yours
Beverly
The next morning after her baby finished nursing, and she had finally eaten some breakfast.
Her surprise at the apartment was only growing.
Not only was this place suitable for a mother and child but it had a supply of food to last them for a couple of months.
Spying a box lying a on a corner table, she picked it up.
Even though it was locked, it was a beautiful box with a village carved on top.
Looking underneath without flipping it over, she read the name Beverly Huston.
Eyes growing large this surprised her, how could two things interconnected be in the apartment she had received as a gift after giving birth.
Yet she had to smile, Sam must have still married his Beverly.
Her smile tilted a little when she heard a knock at the door, not expecting anybody this early she went to see who it was.
The opened door reveled, an elderly man in a suit carrying a briefcase.
This made her eyebrows pop up, when he just stood there staring at her.
Then he nodded before speaking, "Are you Kamola, the mother of Milanna?"
his question started her so much she exclaimed, "what do you want? You can't take her from me."
She had cried out thinking he was from child services; the night of reading Beverly's story about losing her child had gotten to her heart.
The man only shook his head before walking in through the open door.
"Kamola I'm here on the behalf of Mrs. Beverly Huston, that as of this moment is in critical condition in the hospital."
When he saw her confused face, sat down upon one end of the couch patting the other side, but she didn't move.
"I'm here to read her will, please take a seat."
Kamola sat down; bewildered at way the events were turning together.
The man, obviously a lawyer, took out a few documents from his briefcase.
Holding one out to her he spoke again, "this is a letter for you," she didn't take it but sat still unable to understand who this woman was and what this had to do with her.
Unable to keep it to herself, she spoke at last, "Sir, please help me understand this whole thing I'm in the dark. Who is Beverly and what part do I have in her will?"
the lawyer picked up the letter he had set down earlier and said, " Beverly told me to read this to you if you haven't gotten it by yourself."
Now Kamola was starting to get irritated, "GET WHAT MR. LAWYER" she said with a bit to her words.
The man wasn't in the least hurt by her manner instead her answered in a calm voice, "Kamola, I know this could be a lot to take in right now but to be frank, you are Beverly Huston's daughter."
Kamola's mouth fell open, never in her life had she heard something as bizarre as what that man in front of her had just said.
Forgetting her sleeping child, She jumped up her emotions flaring at this man's joke,
"how dare you sit there and joke on this manner lawyer, I have no parents. I can assure you, I grew up my whole teenage life in an orphanage, before I married a wonderful man that died three days ago…"
by the time she had finished yelling at the poor man her emotions spent, Milanna began to wail in the other room.
Walking calming to her, she picked up her baby and rocked her till the wails turned to little hic-up's.
Returning to the "living room", Kamola calmly sat down holding her now sleeping child.
Staring at the man, she said "explain to me this nonsense," he nodded and began to read the letter.
Dear Kamola,
This may have been a surprise for you to have my lawyer show up at the apartment.
I hope it is to your liking.
After I found out about your house burning down and the tragic death of your husband, I felt it was time to tell you about myself.
Kamola, I have been searching for you for 20 years, you are a very hard women to find.
I had given up hope to every finding you when I heard that a woman named Kamola that was giving birth, had lost her husband and her home, my heart jumped for joy.
You see Kamola; I have found you, my baby girl.
I don't know if you've read any of the letters underneath my pillow but there I wrote to my love, Sam Huston, that I had been raped and had conceived a child.
After 9 months of inner battle I gave birth to a pretty baby girl, I named her Kamola after my dear mama. there are few kamolas' in this world that look like you.
The only thing that had broken my heart was my parents, your grandparents, Vern and Ally Adams forced me to put you in the orphanage.
If you still have doubts my lawyer has the necessary paper work to prove I have indeed found my girl.
Please don't be frightened my Kamola, I'm leaving you my apartment since I have no need of it anymore.
My doctor say's I have only a few more months to live, and I prefer dying here than alone in my bed; He said the cancer is eating me away. I love you;
Forever your mother, Beverly (Adams) Huston.
P.S Sam Huston would have loved to meet you, but 7 years of war can burden of person, like it did my Sam.
He died twenty-five years after we were married, the day before I found you my love.
After the lawyer finished reading, I was crying, this couldn't be, I couldn't have a mother after all.
He picked up the will next; I nodded for him to read it.
"In the event of my death, I Beverly Huston give my whole estate to my only daughter and granddaughter.
They are to live in my apartment and at my parent's summer villa in Greece.
For my granddaughter I leave my necklace and pearl ring.
To my daughter my handcrafted memory box with our village carved on top." The lawyer continued to list more items but Kamola was only thinking of one thing; the apartment.
This was her mother's house; she had a real live mother.
As if called for, she remembered her mother saying she had cancer, and only a few months to live.
Gasping she looked at the lawyer, "I want to see my mother please."
He nodded and gathered his papers; Kamola quickly got dress and got Milanna dressed as well.
The lawyer drove me to the hospital, the same one I had left four days ago.
He parked and led her inside a quiet hallway up three flights of stairs, by the time we got to the top my hands were aching from the car seat.
The lawyer took Milanna car seat from me and walked up to the nurses' desk. him ask the nurses if Beverly Huston could see her long lost daughter.
Their eyes grew misty, before one of the nurses led them to a room, stopping them I asked if I could go in alone.
They nodded and the lawyer handed Milanna to me. I walked into the room smelling of medicine and looked upon the bed.
There lay an elderly woman in her eighties, frail from the battle with cancer.
Setting the car seat on the edge of the bed, I walked closer as the sick woman's eyes opened.
When their eyes met, Beverly began to cry holding out her hand to her girl.
I knelt next to the bed and took hold of her hand.
Looking into the blue eyes of Beverly Huston,
I whispered, "my mother."
Okay tell me what you think!
