He strikes a match
Across my rough complexion,
I am drawn to the flame
Like seeing sunlight for the first time,
I engulf myself in it
It burns
I expect pleasure and get only pain.
Scared, I run,
Decide that dreams are disappointing
And you only get burned.
He strikes a match
Across my scarred skin
But as I wince, anticipating pain
He lights a candle.
Like a delicate, flickering flame
I begin to dream again.
