Lights

Lights dance on the wall
shining in their glory,
knowing they are unstoppable.

My weary eyes wish
to close, to rest –
but the lights dance on
uncaring of my desires

They dance around
eluding me as I try
to catch them;
knowing I can't
but trying
anyway

A bitter taste in my mouth,
tears, unbidden, in my eyes.
Oh, how I wish to catch those lights!

They are always a step ahead
laughing like delighted children at play.
Tired I am, but I chase, always chase

But my dreams elude me
and they get away . . .
so close they were!

Tears fall as I stop soundlessly
I will never catch those lights
will never turn them off –
they are a part of my heart
yet something I will never have

Goodnight, lights! Though you
taunt me, I love you still;
knowing, as ever, that I
will never catch you.
