Chapter 2: Tour de la Mort
Stephanie Malo loved the Eiffel Tower at night. She loved how it sparkled at night and how soothing a nice walk around the top could be late at night when a soft breeze of Paris air came forth bringing out the scents of restaurants and the sound of laughter.
This night however was different. Stephanie glanced around the elevator it was pretty much empty except for her and a few others. People were smiling and whispering softly amongst themselves. Stephanie didn't think much of it after all it was ten thirty at night. The tower didn't close till midnight. She glanced over to her right where her best friend Justine stood quietly holding the camera they would use to take the last picture.
The last picture to remember when life was simple.
The last picture of the two dreamers whose dreams were gone.
Stephanie shook her head and sighed. Justine looked over at her with concern, her deep blue eyes twinkled and her brown short spiky hair wavering a bit. Stephanie waved her off and smiled a fake smile. She sighed inwardly and glanced around the elevator.
Around her instead of the smiling people she had seen earlier dead corpses spattered the floor. A smiling couple that had been second to board now they held hands and gashes across their bodies spelled the phrase; 'Tour de la Mort.' A kind old man Stephanie would see regularly around the tower was in the fetal position with a slit throat, blood surrounded him in an unkind pool. The lights flickered and darkness surrounded her. Shadows flickered in her vision and her heart beat faster with every second that passed. "Justine!" She screamed searching the elevator blindly with her hands. She slipped and fell on the corpse with a bashed head and fell on something solid. She groaned and raised her eyes slowly.
The light flickered back on and in front of her was Justine's mutilated corpse. It looked like someone had bashed her body with a hammer. Stephanie screamed and tears ran down her face. Sweat ran down her back and panic spread through her. Her simple jeans and t shirt stuck to her like skin and her once straight brown hair stood in shapes that didn't make sense.
"No…no….no!" she screamed and screamed again. Until the light flickered again, the corpses that surrounded her stood and began whispering. "Don't you laugh when the hearse goes by, for you may be the next to die…Tour de la Mort, Tour de la Mort. They wrap you in a big white sheet, from your head down to your feet!"
The corpses walked until Justine was a hair away from her face, "Wake up."
Stephanie woke up with Justine hovering over her with a panicked look on her face. "Stephanie? Stephanie can you hear me?" She asked her eyes searching for any sign of ailment. Stephanie blinked quickly and sat up straight, "I'm….fine…fine…yeah I'm ok." Relief was visible on her face as she helped Stephanie up. People looked at her a sympathetic look in their eyes. People asked if she was ok while others stayed as far away as possible. It wasn't everyday people had a spontaneous nightmare in public.
The elevator doors opened and people filed out. Stephanie kept her cool. "I just need to keep cool, none of that was real. NONE. You are going to take the damn picture and then go home. All a dream, Haha! Look at that I cant even remember what that dream was about!" Stephanie laughed quietly to herself.
Stephanie followed Justine to a corner that had good lighting and a nice view of paris stretching out behind them. "Alright ready?" Justine asked holding up the camera and smiling her best smile. Stephanie took a deep breath and walked into frame. She put on her best smile and waited until the camera flashed.
The camera gave a soft splash of white and when the haze cleared her mouth went dry. Corpses stood, the air was not filled with the warm air and wonderful scents she was used to, instead the air was cold and stale. It smelled of decaying flesh. Stephanie moved her mouth but no sound came out. A cold and bony hand rested on her shoulder and Justine's voice whispered in her ear, "Your stomach turns a slimy green, And pus pours out like whipping cream. You'll spread it on a slice of bread, And this is what you eat when you are dead."
Stephanie screamed and whipped around. With all her might she pushed the corpse over the protective railing. Just before a sense of relief could wash over her she felt hands grab her from behind. She soon heard the wind whipping in her ears. She screamed, that wouldn't help her she thought but screaming was the only thing she could do at this point. Stephanie saw the ground speeding up to meet her and just before she went splat she thought back to when she was a child.
"Mommy sing me a song."
"Promise you'll go to bed?"
"Promise." Her mother sat down at the edge of the bed a sweet smile on her face. ""Don't you ever laugh as thehearsegoes by,
For you may be the next one to die.
They wrap you up in abig white sheet
From your head down to your feet.
They put you in abig black box
Andcover you up with dirt and rocks.
All goes well for about a week,
Then your coffin begins to leak.
The worms crawl in, the worms crawl out,
The worms playpinochlein your snout,
They eat your eyes, they eat your nose,
They eat thejelly between your toes.
A big green worm with rolling eyes
Crawls in your stomach and out our eyes.
Your stomach turns a slimy green,
And pus pours out like whipping cream.
You'll spread it on a slice of bread,
And this is what you eat when you are dead."
Stephanie saw the corpse that once was her friend hit the ground. And soon she followed. "I'm sorry."
The next day reports streamed in. "Two Girls, Double suicide off the Eiffel Tower!" People mourned and for days the Tower was closed. Then again, people recovered and soon the Tower was alive again. Everyone happy, Smiling as the elevator lifted the first people back up to the Tower. That's when the lights flickered. That's when the screams started.
