Chapter 12 Love
This wasn't the first time I had woken up because I was in pain. Too many times I woke up in the hospital due to a stupid accident, like falling asleep while I was driving, or passing out at the top of a flight of stairs. But I have to say that waking up from a broken nose had to be the worse. Every single breath hurt, bringing me closer and closer to tears.
"Open your eyes beautiful." I opened my eyes immediately at Jacks command. He was hovering over my in a brightly lit room. I closed my eyes as fast as I opened them wanting refuge from the abrasive light.
"Why do hospitals have to be so bright?" I mumbled receiving a laugh from Jack.
"How do you feel, Love?" he asked petting my hair. I slowly opened my eyes letting them get used to the light. Once I could open my eyes without feeling like ripping them out I answered.
"Horrible, and in pain."
"What hurts?" he asked.
"Everything" I said, knowing it was an unhelpful answer, but was true. I ached everywhere. Not a single part of me wasn't crying in pain.
"What hurts most, Love?" He asked. I was grateful for Jack's patience. I took a deep breath before answering.
"My head, nose, and ribs hurt most." I whispered. Jack nodded and kissed my head.
"I can make the pain go away but you have to trust me." I nodded willing to do anything to be able to breathe without feeling pain. He turned his face away, bringing his wrist to his mouth. When he turned back to my I could see blood dripping from his mouth and his wrist. "Drink this." He said brining his wrist closer to my mouth.
"What? No, no way!" I yelled in protest, trying to get away. Every move I made sent a jolt of pain through my body.
"Please, it will heal you, you won't have to feel the pain anymore, and we can leave." He pushed, almost begging me. I slowly opened my mouth and moved towards his wrist. My lips wrapped around the wound he made and I began sucking the blood in. It didn't taste like what I expected. Instead of rusty and salty it was tangy and sweet. It was indescribable and I felt myself wanting more. Too soon Jack pulled away, the wound closing. I leaned back, relishing in the relief I felt. All the pain I felt moments ago were replaced with a slight tingle. I loved it.
"Will I turn into a vampire?" I asked in a small voice. Jack smiled and shook his head.
"No, no. I'll explain that later. Right now I need to get you home." He smiled again. "Stay here, I'll be right back." He stood up and walked towards the door.
"Where are you going?" I asked, slightly worried.
"I'm just going to talk to the doctor. I'll be back in a few minutes." With that he was gone. True to his word, not two minutes later he walked back in. "Ready to go home?" He asked cheerfully. I nodded enthusiastically. He walked over to the side of my bed and lifted me up. I saw that I was still in the clothes I had worn to school, instead of one of those drafty hospital gowns. I assumed Jack had something to do with that.
"What happened to that Jock?" I asked remembering how I got here in the first place. Jack set me down in a wheel chair and rolled me out of the room.
"Last I saw he was being arrested. He's lucky the police got to him before I did though." He grumbled. I suddenly felt scared of what Jack might have done; images of Jack ripping him limb by limb ran through my head. "Megga… Love?" He looked at me heart broken.
"I-…I uh.." realizing that Jack had been reading my mind. I had no idea what to say. Jack said nothing as he continued pushing me out of the hospital and towards his jeep. He helped me into my seat, saying nothing before leaving to return the wheelchair. I knew he was hurt, but I couldn't help but wonder how far he would really go if someone hurt me. He didn't look at me as he got in the car and started driving away. I wracked my brain trying to find the right words to fix this but I came up empty.
"You don't have to apologize for your thoughts." He said. "I know I shouldn't expect you not to see me as I really am."
"Jack-" I started, trying to tell him that wasn't how I saw him at all.
"Don't." He interrupted. Every time I tried to say something, he would cut me off. Eventually I gave up and just let him drive in silence. When we reached my house, I didn't wait for him to open my door. I just got out and walked towards my front door. Before I could open it Jack place his hand on the wood, keeping me from entering. His other hand rested on the other side of me, trapping me between him and the door. I turned around to face him.
"I know it's impossible for you not to, but I don't ever want you to be afraid of me." He whispered.
"This is all so new, and everything has just… I don't know how to think." I said wrapping my arms around his waist and burying my head in the crook of his neck. "I just need to get used to this." I whispered. Jack's arms, although hesitant at first, wrapped around me, returning the embrace. "I love you Jack." I said. His arms tightened around me.
"I love you too, Megga."
