Chapter 30:

Alexis felt a pounding in her head. She lifted her hand to the back of her head and winced. It was covered with a bandage.

"It's about time!"

She jumped and screamed "God!" before rolling over. She noticed how she wasn't lying in her bed. She looked up and quickly realized she was in the infirmary.

"No, not God." She heard the voice say. "But thanks for the compliment."

She rolled back around and faced Shane. He was smirking, but she could see the worry in his eyes. Alexis tried to remember what had happened, but she couldn't – apart from the beginning of the game. She assumed that the ball had hit her on the back of her head and she fainted.

She felt herself flush red and she buried herself into her hands. "Oh god... I'm such an idiot."

Immediately she felt Shanes hand on her forearm she shut her eyes at the soothing tone of his voice. "Hey, the fight wasn't your fault."

It took a while for his words to settle in. Her eyes snapped open and she sat up. "Fight? What fight?"

He took in a sharp breath. "You must have hit your head hard."

Alexis's eyes widened. "Don't tell me I was in a fight with someone else." She let go of the comforter and covered her face again. "I'm such a doofus."

"You weren't in the fight" She heard Shane hesitate. "And er... Alexis? You might want to cover yourself again in case a boy comes in."

She glanced at Shane who was staring open mouthed at her chest. She looked down and noticed she was only in her bra and her shorts.

She let out a little squeak and pulled the comforter up. Alexis was glad Shane wasn't laughing at her tiny chest.

She swallowed as she realized that if Shane wasn't joking about; whatever had happened was probably really serious. This doesn't look very good.

"So... what happened?"

"A few hours ago, you had a–"

"I passed out for a few hours?"

He checked his wrist watch and nodded. "Well, for one hour."

She nodded, and so he continued. "You had a game. You guys were doing well; but weren't winning. Damien was about to make the winning shot – which everyone knew was going to go in – when Aiden blocked it, so it didn't go in."

"Why would he do that?" Alexis knew Aiden was all about winning. Why would he do something to prevent him from winning?

"Nobody knows. Anyway, before anyone knew it, Damien and Aiden were in this massive fist fight. Everyone thinks it is because of the ball but I don't think so."

Immediately, her memory flooded back to her. She remembered being helpless and weak as she watched the two boys pummel each other. She also remembered Aiden slumping to the floor and Damien covered in bruises.

"Damien?" She screamed. "Is he okay? Where is he?"

"Over here." She heard him call from the other side of the curtain to the right of her.

She sprung up and ran to the curtain before pulling it back. There, in a white shirt and black shorts lay Damien covered in bandages.

His eyes lingered on her chest before travelling to her face. "Are you okay?"

He nodded, and winced from the movement. "I'm fine. How are you?"

"I'm not the one who was beaten up." She was instantly by his side and leant down to place a kiss on his cheek, not caring if she was hardly wearing any clothes. He caught her hand and placed a kiss on her knuckles.

Just that moment, the nurse who had treated when she was knocked up by a ball, entered. Immediately Damien let go of Alexis's hand and she backed away; but the Nurse just gave them both a wink.

"Here you are dearie." She handed her a baggy shirt. "Just in case anyone barges in"

She stared open mouthed at the Nurse. "How… how do you know?"

"Well, your grandpa had to tell me, didn't he? Wouldn't want anything serious to happen with me thinking you're a boy, do we?"

And with those words the nurse walked out.

Alexis pulled on the shirt and fidgeted. "So… what was the fight about?"

"You."

She winced at how it was plainly stated. "Well… if it's about me, then it's probably my fault. My fault that both of you got hurt."

She felt like bursting into tears, but knew she couldn't. She had to stay strong – and besides, she wasn't the one covered in bruises.

Damien shifted to the side of his bed and patted the space beside him. "Come here."

She eagerly lay down beside him and buried her face into his chest. "It was my fault. I'm such a bad person aren't I?"

He ran his hand over her soft cropped hair. "The fight was about you, but you weren't the one who started it."

"But you said–"

He placed a finger on her lips. "Aiden and I are to blame, not you. You weren't the one who was throwing the punches were you?" She shook her head "I guess I was trying to listen about what you said. Not to fight fire with fire.

"But then, when Aiden threw the punch, I just… I don't know. I lost it. I kept my anger bottled up and I'm not particularly good at it. The fight just let me release the anger. Will you forgive me?"

She didn't answer his question, instead she whispered. "You did that for me?"

He put his arm around her body and pulled her closer. Alexis could feel his breath tickle her ear. "I'd do anything for you."

He closed the gap between them and kissed her gently. She wrapped her arms around his body – careful not to touch his bruises – and forgot about everything. She forgot about Aiden, she forgot about her Grandpa; and she even forgot about Jace. It was just her and Damien that moment.

When they finally broke away, she gazed up at him through her eyelashes. She couldn't think of anywhere else she'd rather be.

"I love you Alexis you know that?" He whispered. "I love you so much it hurts."

She hesitated, and he noticed her. "You don't have to say it back."

Alexis shook her head. "No Damien, I love you too."

Aiden stared up at Alexis's grandpa in fear.

He didn't know what his punishment would be. Not many people had seen who had thrown the first punch, but he was pretty sure every account they had gotten would say Aiden had thrown the first punch.

He swallowed as the old man sat down. "I think we both know why we're both here."

Aiden nodded. "Yes sir."

"Why are we here?"

Please don't do this to me. "I started a fight when we had a guest school round. I have probably earned this school a bad reputation…" his voice trailed off.

Principal Clinton nodded. "I won't ask you what it was about." He let out a small sigh of relief. "But I'm afraid you're not going to go unpunished."

He swallowed again. "I understand, Sir." He gripped the sides of his seat.

"I'm sorry but it has been decided by the school board that we're going to have to kick you off the school."

Aiden shot up from his seat. "What? You can't do that? Where am I going to live?"

Clinton waited for him to sit down, and then continued. "We have already thought about that. It says on your application that you're turning 18 next week?" – He nodded in conformation – "Well, we have bought you a small flat where you can reside, free of charge."

His shoulders slumped. "Thank you Sir." He mumbled, but he didn't feel very thankful.

He nodded. "You may return to your current room now."

Aiden stood up, said 'thank you' once more and walked out of the office. As soon as he left, he realized he wouldn't be able to see Alexis anymore.

Don't worry babe, I'll somehow win your heart. I know I will. I'll do something Damien can't do.
