'I gazed into the crystal sea of his eyes. At that moment I knew that he meant what he said. I felt a lump in my throat and tears pricked my eyes, I didn't want to lose him. I wanted to go with him, be beside him at every step of the way. I knew I was being ridiculous; they would never let a mere girl go out to the front. We both knew, he was making this journey alone.'
It is the early 20th century and disaster is imminent. 16 year old Maria Fairford is an inquisitive trouble maker from Okehampton, a small moorland village in south Devon. She is permanently ridiculed for her flaming hair and freckles, but is soon accepted into the heart of a handsome young errand boy. Their romance blossomed as trouble was brewing in Europe. When World War One breaks out, Charlie is then forced to sign up by his over-bearing father and leaves Maria behind.
Letters keep the lovers connected and sane, but after about seven months the letters stop coming. Maria is convinced that Charlie is still alive, and against all obstacles she is determined to find him. Working as a frontline nurse, Maria soon discovers that the war is not all that Charlie made it out to be.
After several years of searching, all hope diminishes of Maria ever finding her beloved alive.
Will she ever find Charlie again?
