This was inspired by the Book of A Thousand Days in which the main character Dashti is forced into pretending to be a noble and is caught by a rival who tries to have her beheaded on a butchering block. She sees the sword raised against the sky and thinks "how pretty, silver on blue". The book also makes references to "the eternal blue sky" which is mentioned in the poem.

Silver On Blue
They dragged me to the block
And they took me through the street of silver buildings
Where people yelled
And people jeered
And people cheered
About my fate
And everywhere it was silver on blue
They bound my hands
And they bound my feet
With silver wire
And everywhere it was silver on blue
They brought out the man who would do the job
The brought him out, in his silver uniform
And everywhere it was silver on blue
Then they made me kneel
And bow my head
And I saw the platform
Stained red
And nowhere was it silver on blue
The people
They yelled, they jeered, and they cheered
For more red
But I was quite while it hit me
And I pleaded, and I prayed, and I yearned
For one last glimpse of blue
And I looked through the haze of hate
So vehement it held me down
And I saw the man with his sword raised against the endless sky
And then everything was silver on blue
