Hans Bergensen was a journalist, reporting on a brutal kidnapping operation in Eastern Europe in 1986. Uncovering a shattering secret, he travels to Tonsburg, Norway - his home country. The next morning, he is found by the side of a highway, with seven bulletholes riddling his torso.

Thirty-four years later, in 2010, his nephew Lars Bergensen is fleeing from Russian mafia in England. Fearing for his life, he accidentally stumbles across an old Moleskine notebook belonging to his late uncle. Filled with encrypted notes and half-hinted clues addressed specifically to him, Lars realises he has stumbled across something larger than he ever could have imagined.
