The morning was like every other Saturday morning. Get up, get dressed, get Alicia up, eat breakfast, and watch T.V. Alicia and I sat on the couch and watched Disney Jr. while eating Cheerios. We are going to go to the park after we finished. It was going to be nice outside, so I was excited.
"Are you two ready to leave?" Mom asked, taking our empty bowls from us.
"Yes." we answered, while putting on our shoes. Before long we were out the door walking to the park.
The park was only a ten minute walk from our house. The park wasn't that large. It only had eight swings, a jungle gym, and a small field.
"I wanna play on the swings!" Alicia yelled, trying to wiggle her hand out of mine.
"Go ahead." I let go of her hand and she dashed over to the swings. I went over to the bench that was only a couple of feet from the swing sets. I looked around and there were some families there, pretty normal, but then I noticed something. The shadows of the trees didn't look like trees; they had a weird shape that resembled a human. I rubbed my eyes to make sure I wasn't seeing things. When I opened my eyes the shadows looked normal.
Wow, I thought, it must be the heat. I looked over to Alicia; she was swinging back and forth. I looked at the child next to here, and my eyes went wide. The girl looked like… looked like she was made from plants! Her skin was a brown color, and her ears looked like leaves. The girl's hair seemed like it was made of vines and leaves.
"What is going on here?" I whispered to myself, my eyes still wide. The girl looked up and met my gaze. She smiled at me, and just seemed to just fade back into a normal looking five-year-old girl. That's it, I thought, I'm going crazy.
"Come push me!" Alicia yelled. I went over to her and started pushing her. I looked around the park again. I didn't know why, I just had this strange feeling. That's when I noticed something out of the corner of my eye. It was gold feline like eyes. I stared at them for a while. I was knocked out of my staring contest with the eyes when Alicia came back and knocked me onto the ground.
"I'm sorry!"Alicia cried, while running over to me to check if I was okay.
"It's fine. I'm not hurt." I said gently, trying to calm her down. She looked at me while wiping away tears from her eyes. I just smiled at her and waited for her to dry her eyes. I looked at my watch and noticed it was almost noon. Wow, I thought, we've been here for two hours already.
"We have to leave soon." I told her.
"But I wanna play some more!" she whined.
"I didn't say we had to leave now." I said. "I said we have to leave soon; go play for a little longer." She gave me a big smile and ran to the jungle gym.
"Was that your sister?" a voice said from behind me. I whirled around to come face to face with a woman. She looked around twenty and was very thin. She was very pretty, but something was off about her. She was wearing a long black dress that reached the ground with long sleeves. Her hair matched her dress and reached her hips. Then I noticed her eyes, they were pure black.
"No," I lied, "she is just one of the kids in the neighborhood that I babysit."
"Hmm…" The woman paused for a moment. "I see. Well then, good luck taking care of the child. Have a good day." The woman turned around and left.
When she was gone, I let the chill I was holding back run up my spine. That woman gave me a bad feeling.
"Come on Alicia! It's time to go home!" I yelled to her. She didn't seem to hear me. She was talking to one of the other kids at the park. Though, it seemed more like Alicia was babbling and the other child was just staring at her. I walked over to them.
"Come on, it's time to go home." I said, while grabbing Alicia's hand.
"But, but…" she started, but I gave her a stern look and she gave up. She waved good-bye to the kid she was talking to, and let me take her back to the house.
When we got home, it was a little after noon, so I went to the kitchen to get something to eat. My mom was in the kitchen chopping up some vegetables.
"The sandwiches next to me are for you and Alicia." she stated. I grabbed the two plates and went upstairs. I stopped at Alicia's room and gave her, her sandwich and went down to my room.
I sat down and turned the T.V on to a random channel that I liked and ate my sandwich. That's when I noticed something in the mirror.
My necklace, I thought, it's gone!
