Chapter 1

The First 50

70 years ago, back in 2025, a game began. A sick, twisted game. A game that messed with the minds of innocent children. A game with blood and death. They call it Blood Shed. Each year, 50 kids with the top athletic grades are chosen to go against their own will, but of course, the kids who are chosen don't figure this out.

They don't know why they are chosen. All they know is that they are chosen for the Death Games. Children 6 through 18 are chosen to go, the chip implanted in their brain telling them that they were chosen a day before they are picked up. The ones that try to run are faced with a serious penalty that is still unknown because the ones who get it, never speak of it.

Like a never healing wound on the heart.

The government's hiding something big. It would explain how every year, the Death Games go off air until a month or two, and by then there are only 5 to 10 left.

The 50 children who are chosen all around the world are taken to a different planet, a planet far away from Earth and was found 70 years ago. A planet a lot like ours but very much different. This planet is where the Death Games are located. Where the Death Games began.

This planet is called Blood Shed. It's name just like the game because of all the blood that has been spilled on the large planet.

All 50 children are trained before going to Blood Shed. Blood Shed is like nothing any human has ever imagined. The planet is filled with horrors beyond the imagination, creatures that will forever stay unknown.

50 are chosen but only 2 will come out alive, sometimes not even 1 comes out alive. Sometimes, they all disappear without anything to hint where they went. Once they land on the planet, there is no way off until the end of the games.

Legend has it, 8 years ago there was a small girl who won Blood Shed. She was only 8. After she came back to Earth she disappeared and no one knows where she is to this day, her name wasn't even mentioned. She went by Number 08 so no one could find out who she was. But that's a story for later.

Now it is time for the next 50 to be chosen.

Let the games begin.

~Blood Shed~

I ran through the crowded halls, slipping through the herd of high schoolers like a snake. Before I knew it, I was out of the herd of people. I walked briskly into my Gym class, tucking my wild light brown hair behind my ear.

"Chiara!" A voice whispered in my ear. I shivered before turning towards my best friend, her glossy blond hair a monster of curls around her soft face

"You're going to give someone a heart attack one day, you know that?" I told her as we walked into the girls locker room to get into our gym clothes.

I sprinted before slowing down just a little bit, twisting on my toes and pushing off the ground, back towards the ground. I arched my back and soared over the bar, landing on my shoulder blades, the bar still in place.

"Perfect as always," My gym teacher Coach Gordon told me with a grin "Lets go Valentina!" Coach blew his whistle for my best friend Valentina as she began to sprint and then jumped, tripping on her shoelace making her head hit the hard bar pretty bad.

"Ow!" Valentina hissed through clenched teeth as her back hit the ground and the bar fell on her forehead. I flinched.

"That's gonna leave a mark," I comment, earning a glare from her as she sat up, holding her forehead in pain

"And once again, you fail," Coach Gordon told her with a shake of his head as he marked something down on his clipboard "Take her to the nurses office again would you?" Coach Gordon asked me. I gave him an apologetic look before helping Valentina up and headed towards the nurses office.

When we got to the nurses office, the nurse tended to Valentina's wounds, scolding her about her bad habit of getting hurt. Valentina and I walked through the empty hall alone in silence.

"Hey Chiara?" I look over at Valentina but she's not looking at me, she's not even smiling

"What's up?" I ask. Valentina stops all of a sudden

"The Death Games are about to start again you know," my blood freezes over but I give her a weird look

"Yeah so?" I answer. Valentina looks at me, her face expressionless.

"What if one of us gets chosen?" She asks me. I raise my eyebrows.

"Why would we be chosen? We've never been chosen before and the Authority's usually get the people around 17 to 18 here. We're 16 so it'd be a rare chance for one of us to get picked," I try to reassure her but Valentina didn't look convinced

"Promise you won't get picked," Valentina held out her pinky, her light hazel eyes filled with determination

"Um Val, that's a bit hard to promise because what if I am picked?" I asked her as I rubbed the back of my neck like a guy does

"I don't care. Promise," Valentina was being strict about this. I sighed and pushed her hand away

"Lets go get dressed Val," I tell her as I brush past her

"Okay," She replies quietly as she grabs the bottom of my shirt in the back and we walk down the hall quietly

~Death Game~

I walk down the sidewalk after school, the memory of what happened in the hall with Valentina still running fresh through my head. I sigh and run a hand through my tangle of brown hair, looking around and finding a little boy on the other side of the street sobbing.

He only looked about 6.

I looked both ways before crossing the road and walking over to him. I crouch down in front of him and wipe the snot and tears that he couldn't get with his small hands with the sleeve of my shirt.

"Hey what's wrong?" I ask him. The little boys golden eyes fill with tears, his lower lip quivering as he sniffles.

"I'm never going to see Mommy and Daddy again!" He tells me, the sobs shaking his small frame

"And whys that?" I ask, pressing the question

"B-because I was chosen," the words seemed to make him cry harder. My eyes widened but I knew I needed to ask.

"For what?" He looked up at me again, his light blond hair sticking to the tops of his cheeks

"The Death Games," His eyes seemed haunted

"Don't worry, you won't be alone, because," the words froze in my throat as neon green words popped up in my vision "I'll be with you," The words came out in a small voice. The blood in my veins seemed to go cold and the world began to go uneven. Written on my vision were the words:

Congratulations!

You are the 45th winner

to be going Blood Shed!

Be ready by 9p.m sharp tomorrow!
