I Had It Better Yesterday (Jan 20)
After years of traveling on
I return to the neighborhood I was raised on
to find it barren, empty, and desolate
as if the times took it and blew it away.
My friend said that home is haven
but what if your home has taken
all the memories and dreams you planted
as if they were seeds beneath the ground
and, as they sprouted, cut them away.
Where did my old friends go?
If I could really call them friends
as they took over the streets
with ever laughing smiles of glee
while I stayed inside,
my mind connected to fantasy land.
And as they say,
fantasies don't last forever.
I walked out of home
and made my life my own.
But to be honest,
now that I'm looking back
I can surely say
that I had it better yesterday.
My life was better yesterday.
