In a land called Calathena, far far away, there are two kingdoms. They are both very powerful, and very greedy.

One of the kingdoms is Escia. The king is Tyorenndous, who rules under fear. The other kingdom is Alagria. The king is Vasuki, who rules with cleverness.

In both of these kingdoms, there are magical folk, people born with special abilities. There are Mystics, and there are Shifters.

Mystics are gifted with an area of magic. Some common Mystic abilities are levitating, telepathy, reflexion. Rarer ones are invisibility and necromancy. Sometimes you could find an Elementalist, someone who controls one of the four elements. A High Elementalist is someone who has double or triple elements, and a Complete Elementalists control all four elements. But High and Complete Elementalists were only heard of in the old legends, and were never recorded in the history in either kingdom.

Shifters are gifted with their own animal to change into at any time. Common animals are deer, horses, rabbits, dogs, cats, cows, etc. A lucky Shifter would get a lion, bear, wolf, or eagle. Sometimes they would be a hybrid animal, a zorse or liger (zebra-horse and lion-tiger). Impossible animals were unicorns, dragons, and griffons; never seen before, but told in stories passed down generations.

A person often has the showings of magic around the age of three, but the stronger the power, the later it appears. Mystic abilities come through in times of danger, and Shifting abilities are shown in times of great emotion.

The royal family began the magical traits. Every member of the family was expected to have a power of some sort, even if it was just cooking mushrooms, as the king Tyorenndous's brother-in-law, Hyprous. Very rarely did commoners sprout into Mystics or Shifters.

The kingdoms were at war, and Tyorenndous was losing. He was running out of magical people in his land, and they needed someone strong if they were not to be crushed.

Tyorenndous was depending on his nephew, Leo, his sister's son, to gain a powerful magic. He was their only hope.

Because the king of Encia knew that Leo was different than all of the others in Calathena. He just had to find himself.
