I've gone back to fix this, so it's hopefully better. ;D
Preface
Marguerite-Marcelle walked forward slowly. It was dark everywhere. She hesitantly moved a slender hand to her chest. What was going on? It was so completely dark. She could not even see her hand in front of her. She sighed and smoothed down her blue gown. Was it the blue one? The one that Madame Chantelle had made for her?
Marguerite-Marcelle shook her head swiftly, as if to shake the thoughts from her cluttered, confused mind. Her head pounded and she couldn't understand why.
What had happened? She did not know. She couldn't remember! For goodness sakes, she didn't even remember what she was wearing!
The last thing she remembered was being in Paris with Bridgette and Anouk. Wait...hadn't Benjamin been there too? And someone else. A girl. A very pretty girl, but she couldn't remember her name. She felt that she should know this girl's name, yet she couldn't remember. Had this unnamed girl been a close friend of Marguerite-Marcelle's?
She shook her head again. Confused. So, so terribly discombobulated and lost. Yes, lost was the correct word. She was lost. Lost in a strange, dark world.
Suddenly, Marguerite-Marcelle heard something. Something so beautiful and heavenly. It was singing. Beautiful singing. She struggled to hear the words, for at first they appeared whispered, yet they gradually grew louder, until the end was loud and triumphant! A proclamation to the heavens.
Do you hear the people sing?
Lost in the valley of the night.
It is the music of a people who are climbing to the light.
For the wretched of the earth, there is a flame that never dies.
Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise.
They will live again in freedom in the garden of the Lord.
They will walk behind the plough shed; they will put away the sword.
The chain will be broken and all men will have their reward!
Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Somewhere beyond the barricade is there a world you long to see?
Do you hear the people sing? Say do you hear the distant drums?
It is the future that they bring when tomorrow comes!
Marguerite-Marcelle was closer to the voices now. She sounded so close to them and yet so far away. The last verse was repeated:
Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
It sounded so beautiful. It was a decree that she dared not interrupt.
Somewhere beyond the barricade is there a world you long to see?
Do you hear the people sing? Say do you hear the distant drums?
She heard it. The distant, yet close drums.
It is a future that they bring when tomorrow comes!
Marguerite-Marcelle soon forgot all her confusion. A bright, white light blinded her.
All will be explained. Eventually. Who is mystery girl, Marguerite-Marcelle? Read t find out! The song, as much as I wish it were so, I do not own. It is Epilogue from Les Miserables. Webber owns it. The lucky man! There will be some French in the following chapters, and I will have translations, but bear with me, because I am not French. :)
