…He thinks it wasn't him

Who held up the stars at night

He only saw them

From his spot on Earth

She went up there and touched them

And breathed in stardust

'Don't leave me here'

He had said to her, before

And he feels stupid

Because that's childish

He's not a child, he knows death,

He understands it

It's natural, like life

But why hasn't humanity…

Embraced it like life?

Why can't he smile back

At that ashy, grinning skull

It's pleased, why isn't he?

There's nothing after this

No afterlife, he thinks

And why would there be?

One life is plenty

Enough to see galaxies

And planets and stars

Form a telescope

Like he did, or from up close

Like she used to, back then

But there's something about

How the night now shines extra bright…

Maybe he's all wrong

She might be waiting

The next universe over,

A neighbour again
