A/N: A poem written for my creative writing class. The prompt was "Where I Come From".
I am the little girl stepping off the boat
clutching her mother's hand in her own
her porcelain doll held tight with the awe
and trepidation of Lady Liberty.
I am the withered, wizened man
making his way down the cobbled streets of Glasgow
trudging determinedly through the drifts of snow
to return home before the dark night settles in.
I am the skilled, youthful worker
deftly collecting the treasures
of yesterday's sun with the nimble
fingers of a productive childhood.
I am the hardworking young man
taking night jobs and studying hard
hoping beyond hope to stay in college
and avoid the poisons of a pointless war.
I am the curious little girl
listening to her past by firelight
while sitting on her grandmother's knees
taking what the world has to offer
and storing it in her mind for another time.
