Yukiko's POV

"So everyone listen up, I'll be pairing you all up according to your ranking in the class. This is so that the stronger ones will be able to help the weaker ones and maybe they will have a chance to graduate as well." Mr. Amazaki continued briefing the class and at the thought of having to work with someone who they most probably would not get along with, majority of the class groaned really loudly, hoping that Mr. Amazaki would get the hint. However, the teacher ignored what he had heard and started to read off from the list he had been holding for quite awhile.

With just three months till our high graduation, the school had decided that our cohort was not up to the standard expected of us and thus, there would be a final examination in a month's time. Being a small private high school with a pretty good reputation in the neighbourhood, it seemed that the Mr. Principal was pressured to ensure that every cohort graduate with results sufficient to uphold the image of the best high school in Sakura prefecture. Therefore, they came up with the last minute idea of having the better people pull up the weaker ones, this way we would hopefully graduate with a higher average. A waste of time, I must say but ah well, I still get to revise what I need to in order to make it into Fuji University, the best university in prefecture. I heard that it is hard to make it in and the fees will be really high but I will try my best to make it in and hopefully obtain a scholarship as well. I just wish that I would not be allocated an idiot who will affect my study time. I pushed my spectacles slightly as it was sliding down my nose and listened closely for my name to be called.

"…Haruna-san will be paired with Madoka-san"

"Ehhhh? How come I have to work with her?" Haruna-san mumbled. I turned to look at the girl sitting diagonally in front of me and cheered inside, at least I would not have to trouble myself with her. Haruna-san was well-known to have a strong dislike for studies and was always found sleeping in class. Sometimes, I would wonder how Haruna-san actually made it into our high school. Poor Madoka-san, it'll definitely be hard for her to help pull Haruna-san's grades up.

"… Yukiko-san will be working with.."

Please let it be someone good. Please let it be someone good.

"…Shiro-san."

Please let it b-wait what? Shiro? I cursed my luck as I turned to the right just in time to see the most athletic and musically talented guy waving at me. Of all people, why Shiro? I ignored his wave and sighed, dreading what was about to welcome me during soon. Good bye Fuji University. I teared inside as I watched my dream university fade away.

"Yuki! I'll be in your care for this month!" Shiro walked towards me after dismissal.

"Stop calling me that, Shiro-san." I frowned at him as Mr. Amazaki approached us.

"Yukiko-san, I'm sorry that you have to be put up with the person who is ranked last in class. However, I believe in you, the top scorer in class." Mr. Amazaki patted me on my shoulder as he continued, " Oh and did I mention that the first pair in each class will be awarded an opportunity to go for an interview for Fuji University scholarship and always the pair will win 5 tickets to the fireworks festival which will take place after your graduation. Hope that you will not disappoint me. Good luck." With that, the teacher walked away and left the class.

" 5 tickets to the fireworks festival? It's never easy to get those tickets!" Shiro's eyes widened with surprise and excitement.

"Interview for Fuji University's scholarship?" I was sure that my eyes were equally big then.

"We have to win this!" Shiro and I said in unison.

"I'm glad that we're on the same side, Yuki." Shiro held out a hand for me to shake.

"Same here." I shook his hand, feeling that half of the battle was won with Shiro being motivated to work hard, "But seriously, stop calling me Yuki."
