My name is Harriet Campbell, I'm thirteen years old and I can turn into a fox at will. Now you're probably looking confused and wondering why I spelt 'magic' wrong in the title. Bear with me – I need to tell things in the right order. A little background information about me before this story really kicks off.

My Dad came from the small Scottish village of Luss, and my Mum form Milton-on-Sea. They met at university in Edinburgh, and got married in Milton-on-Sea. Then they moved back to Edinburgh, where they had me and my brother George.

When I was five, my Grandma had a heart attack, and we all moved back to Milton-on-Sea. We moved in with her – back in the house that Mum grew up in. I started primary school here and Jacob was born here.

We go back to Luss sometimes in the holidays to see Dad's family there. I never really think of myself as being Scottish, or even half-Scottish. I have a totally English accent, apart from the odd mispronounced word that I've picked up from Dad.

When I was seven something rather odd happened to me. One moment I was me, running across a deserted beach and the next I wasn't. At the time I couldn't describe what had happened to me. I was suddenly tiny, running on all fours, and then I reared up and became myself again. A small girl with coppery hair in plaits.

And try as I might, I couldn't understand what had happened. Until one fateful day two years later…
